Villa El Portet, Moraira, Costa Blanca. Peaceful Location Alongside El Portet Beach, On No Through Road

Casa Sundial is a stunningly beautiful house on the front line by the sea. The owners designed and built the house and private pool in 1996. The house is located on the no through road on the promontory going out to sea on the east side of El Portet Beach. The grandstand view from Casa Sundial of Moraira town, and its harbour with boats moving in and out all day is very fascinating. The view of the waves gently rolling onto El Portet Beach is yet another attraction. The truly wonderful panoramic view across the sea to Calpe and beyond is enhanced by being framed by the surrounding hills, each day spent at Casa Sundial presents guests with a huge variety of scenes, reflecting the mood of the sea, the weather, and the activity from the harbour. When Moraira has firework displays on the seafront you can watch them from the terrace without going into town. Casa Sundial is an elegant rustic style house, with its elegant stone work arches, and mediterranean palms and flowers in blue pots.

About Mrs. Janette Anne Cowpland

We are a semi retired English married couple, who bought the plot where Casa Sundial now stands in 1986. We went to Spain to buy a Villa as a second home and ended up buying a steep rocky plot instead! We did not start building the house until, 1992.  During the interim period I designed the house. The idea behind the design was to be able to offer our guests their own space. The shape of the house to be curved snugly around the plot all rooms with floor to ceiling windows to make the most of the magnificent view, even the bathroom windows must look out on the view. In keeping with the semi rustic style of the house, antique carved dark oak furniture was shipped down from England to match the beams and cupboard doors.We love how the house looks and enjoy the time we spend there.

Why Mrs. Janette Anne Cowpland chose El Portet

We missed the sun having spent 20 years abroad that we went to Spain to explore. We started at the Costa Brava moving south. We fell in love with Moraira because it did not have any high rise buildings, it was a small town and greener than the other places we had seen. When exploring the town, we found the road Perto Del Sol, and saw a piece of wood sticking out of the ground with a phone number on it. The view was so amazing that we agreed to forget buying a Villa, we had to buy the plot. We went to the town to a phone booth on the sea front, I phoned and we bought the plot the next day. We are delighted with how Moraira has been developed, it has been done in the most delightful caring way. From the entrance to Moraira, to the seafront it is artistic and beautiful, and improving yearly.

What makes this villa unique

When we spend time at Casa Sundial, we never cease to appreciate how lucky we are to gaze at the spectacular view from the house. We enjoy the winter scenes of the sea, and appreciate being able to sit on our terrace in the sun on many of the winter days. We love the out of season months when we can sit in the sun and avoid some of the long winter months in England. I do not think that any other houses in Portet for rental can offer the position next to the sea that we have, or the fantastic view that we have in quite the same way. I believe Casa Sundial is quite unique in this respect. The accommodation is so comfortable too. We also appreciate Casa Sundials quiet exclusive position and the absence of any traffic noise on our no through road. The house is secure, tranquil and comfortable.

We have only let our house via owners direct since 2012. We previously employed an agent in Moraira to handle our bookings. Her clients were all German and French people. We did not get the feed back as it went to the agent, but we do know many of the same people booked several holidays at Casa Sundial several years running. I now have several families that have booked each year.

We now prefer to do the bookings ourselves via owners direct. I have received very complimentary emails from all the tenants who have had holidays at Casa Sundial during this year, several have said they will recomend to family and friends, and make further bookings themselves in the future.

It has been very interesting to see that 90% of my bookings for 2012 have been by British family's using owners direct.

To my surprise we had some bookings very early in the year in 2012 the winter, and the people concerned had very good weather.

This year 2014 we have had several repeat bookings from people who spent two weeks at Casa Sundial in 2012/13

Notes on accommodation: The half of the house available to visitors is the spacious pool terrace with its beautiful swimming pool. The upper floor of the house is not available to guests being the owner’s private section. To ensure total privacy for guests the owners do not occupy their section of the house when guests are in residence. Children & parents warning. The pool is uncovered and very near to the house. There is also a big drop from our house down to the sea. The sea is not accessible from the house terrace. It is very important that guests do not allow children to use the gardeners gate or to climb anywhere near this big drop. The terrace is very well fenced with metal railings, but the drop could be very dangerous for children who are not controlled by their parents. There is a nearly new cot for a baby in arms, there is a new high chair supplied 2015. Note. All bedrooms have new three speed quiet ceiling fans with three lights. Outside: The terrace and pool area of Casa Sundial is spacious, and completely private. There are six sun beds with mattresses. There are three dining tables, two new in 2013, having six chairs each. One set is placed near the door to the lounge, a favourite spot for breakfast in the shade, before the sun gets fully onto the terrace. The second table is placed for afternoon shade by the palm tree. The third table is placed behind the barbecue house for use when it is windy, or for additional shade. There are always at least three umbrellas for visitors to place where shade is required. There are plenty of padded cushions for the outside chairs. To keep the mattresses and cushions dry from dew, or rain, I suggest they are stacked at night under the archways on top of a couple of chairs. The swimming pool has a handrail in the centre of the steps, and is 4ft deep at the shallow end. The Garden has palms, an olive tree five flower beds, and many blue pots with various flowers and shrubs in them. Utility Room: The washing machine is sited in the spacious bathroom of number three bedroom. There is a folding plastic airer, and a basket of pegs supplied. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Cleaning/towels/linen/and maid service. Quality linen, and towels are included in the weekly charge, any other requirements can be discussed with the cleaning services. Large towels are provided for use on the sun beds by the swimming pool. NOT FOR BEACH. Other: The barbecue house has its back to the wind in case a breeze comes from the sea, wonderful cooking can be done on the generous sized grid built into the tiled and brick barbecue. It is fun too, there is tiled seating for helpers inside the little house

Lovely villa with great views

We have just returned from a delightful week at Casa Sundial

where we spent a very relaxing holiday.

Our booking went smoothly and the information provided in advance was

extremely helpful; the owners were able to answer any other questions

we had promptly and effectively.

From the moment we first saw the bay from the villa steps we knew we

had chosen well. The aspect was superb and quite an exceptional

location just a few minutes walk from El Portet's beach, the local

shop and bar/restaurant. A slightly longer walk took us frequently

into Moraira for shops and a wide selection of eating establishments.

With the benefit of a hire car we were able to explore some of the

Jalon valley though this was the furthest we ventured as the busier

resorts of Calpe and Benidorm were not of interest to us on this


The villa itself had all we required for 3 couples, namely en suites

to all bedrooms, a pool just longer than one might expect, a well

furnished terrace area with sunbeds, parasols, tables and chairs and

an excellent BBQ area. The bedrooms were of a traditional style,

spacious and had their own access onto the terrace. The sitting room

was comfortable but it was hardly used as we were able to sit outdoors

throughout the week because of the good weather. The kitchen area

although on the small side had a dishwasher, microwave and hob/oven as

well as plenty of china and cutlery.

We will be happy to return to Casa Sundial in the future to enjoy the

villa, the superb view and relax.

This is our 2nd visit to this amazing villa. Casa Sundial is a traditional villa with, truly stunning views. In May we had sun on the terrace from 10am until around 9pm. The villa has been cleverly designed to maximise the views and the sunshine and the curve of the villa shelters you from the wind.Having visited Moraira for several years and stayed in various locations, Casa Sundial beats the others by far. You cannot fail to relax here, in fact it's hard to tear yourself away. When you do venture out Moraira is about 25 minute leisurely walk away, although you need to be fairly agile as there are lots of steps and a steep hill on the way home. There is also a lovely beach with a bar and restaurant about 5 minutes walk away as well as a Mitchelin star restaurant. The 3 spacious double bedrooms all have ensuites and sea views and there are plenty of chairs and sun loungers on the terrace making the villa great for larger groups, we are returning in September with our sons and their partners. The pool is a good size and perfect for cooling off and there is a realy cleverly designed barbecue. We only used our car to go shopping so you could probably do without a car as the local taxis are reasonable. If you do have a car there is a car port and drive for 3 cars behind a nice secure electric gate. We can't wait to go back.

Fantastic Views

We went to Spain in June for a holiday and also to meet up with relatives who live nearby so we wanted a villa with more rooms than we needed so they could stay with us for a few days. We also wanted somewhere within walking distance of restaurants, bars, a beach with good views. After searching through hundreds of properties we spotted Casa Sundial. As location was our biggest priority, this villa seemed ideal and when we got there it did not disappoint us. The open view from the balcony is absolutely stunning!! It is looking at a picture postcard every day with views from the beach at El Portet, the marina at Moraira and over to Calpe in the distance. We never got tired of watching the world go by as yachts, clippers, catamarans etc moored up for the day in the bay below the villa.

The villa itself was perfect for our needs. When we arrived the place was very clean. The terrace and balcony area is excellent with direct sun from morning until evening. There are plenty of sunbeds, tables, chairs and (huge) parasols if you like the shade. We spent a lot of time cooling off in the large free-form pool and made good use of the BBQ too.

Inside there is plenty of space for lounging around in the evening, there is satellite TV but we did not use it at all although the wi-fi came in very handy for keeping in touch at home. The 3 bedrooms were large and came with their own en-suite.

As I said the main reason for choosing this villa was the location, a 5 minute walk to the nearest bar and beach or a gentle 15 minute stroll to restaurants and shops in Moraira. You could stay here without needing a car although a car is advisable to see more of the area.

All in all a fantastic stay at the Casa Sundial and the perfect location with a perfect view! I would definitely recommend it and hope to return next year.

Special interest holidays:

From Casa Sundial you can watch the boats and fishing boats going in and out of the harbor every day.

The view is so interesting many people avoid going out and are content just watching the action in the bay, and the movement of the sea.

There are a number of very attractive drives to places of interest in the nearby Jalon Valley, and scenic trips into the mountains.  It is also easy to go out for the day to Javea, for walks along the lovely promenade there, Javea market is on Thursdays. Visit Calpe on a Sunday to enjoy the famous fish restaurants in the harbour. Calpe Harbour is a very popular Sunday lunch spot for the locals. The choice of places to visit is enormous, the whole province has many attractions. One of the latest attractions is Terra Mitica behind Benidorm, it is a huge theme park for children, well sign posted from the motorway. There are several themed parks on the outsirts of Benidorm that are attractive to both adults and to children. Information is easily obtainable at the information bureau in Moraira.  


Moraira has two sand beaches, both are safe bathing areas. El Portet beach is a short walk from Casa Sundial. El Portet is a well maintained exclusive cove, with two popular cafe's by the beach. Portet beach is swept daily early morning in season. Moraira main beach is within walking distance from Casa Sundial, about 25 mins, but it would be more convenient to take the car especially when carrying beach equipment. There is free parking in market square, limited on Fridays as it is market day.


El Portet is the most exclusive area of Moraira. Moraira is situated approximately half way between Valencia and Alicante. Formerly a small fishing village, Moraira is now a small fashionable resort with quaint shops, and many restaurants. It has been developed in a very upmarket way, no high rises, and attractive promenades along the coast line. A park with palms and a stream behind the main beach, approached by good roads with artisticly decorated roundabouts. Moraira has been improved well.


Valencia is 1hr 20mins away, and Alicante 1hr. Alicante Airport 65 miles Valencia Airport 85 miles. Calpe is 15km away, and Javea is 10km. Moraira town from El Portet 1km. You leave the motorway at exit number 63, take the road to Teulada. To reach Moraira you must drive through the small town of Teulada, go up the duel carriageway high street, bear right at the small roundabout at the top Moraira is clearly signposted. (You can see our promentory from the top of the hill as you leave Teulada.)

Further Details:

Moors and Christians Feista is always around the 15th June in Moraira. The weather in June is delightfully, hot but not too hot. In my opinion May and June are lovely out of season months to visit Moraira. Ideal for adults as there are no school holidays.

There is a wonderful choice of restaurants in Moraira, several big supermarkets, and shops of many kinds. There are several international banks in Moraira, so there is no problem in using your credit card for cash, or for purchasing from shops. As you drive into Moraira you will see two of the supermarkets on the left. The larger one is in the same row of shops as the Barclays bank. Up the ramp to the open car park, or underneath the building in the basement. You can also buy foreign newspapers from the shop at the entrance to the supermarket.  In El Portet without going into Moraira you can shop at the local shop in Portet run by a Belgium man, it is on the left as you drive from Moraira to Portet. For exercise my husband walks from Casa Sundial down the steep hill to the shop to get his English newspaper. As well as numerous Spanish restaurants, there are some excellent Chinese/ Indian/ Janpanese/and a Dutch restaurant in Moraira. Excellent meat, and fish is sold at two of the big supermarkets at a reasonable price, we favour Pepe La Sol up the ramp near Barclays Bank for most of our grocery shopping.

A 30% deposit is required when making a booking with the balance payable 8 weeks before occupation. Along with a £200 a week refundable security deposit. The security deposit is returned almost immediately after departure once the property has been cleaned and its contents checked. We do not live permanently at our villa, or fill the availability chart with false occupancy dates.

Changeover Day:
Changeover day is normally Saturday or Sunday particularly in the main season. However it may be possible to arrange other arrival days depending on bookings, out of the main season.

Notes on prices:
The prices for this house reflect its superb position by the sea alongside Portet Beach, and the fact that all three bedrooms have their own bathrooms. Long lets for more than two weeks out of the main season will include all the normal services, weekly cleaning, and bed linen, and towel change. Underfloor heating is available by arrangement, it is an extra cost as gas is now very expensive. Consider spending winter months here, it does reduce the months of winter very pleasantly!
