Chalet Le Tadorne is a luxurious and spacious self-catered alpine chalet - sitting in the wonderful location of Châtel, part of the Portes Du Soleil. The design is that of a traditional wooden alpine chalet but finished with high quality contemporary features. The 4 bedrooms are all en suite with hair dryer and radio alarm. The fully equipped kitchen area leads into a large dining area and sitting room with soft leather sofas, log burning fire and multimedia centre with TV, games console and surround sound system. UK TV channels are available. Downstairs there is ski storage and boot warming facilities along with a washing machine and drying cupboard. Outside there are terrace and decking areas and all year round there is an outdoor Canadian hot tub and leading off this is the sauna. Chalet Le Tadorne enjoys a peaceful hillside location, a short walk or bus ride from the village with all the amenities of Châtel to hand but near the main ski and activity areas.

About the Owner

In the late 80's we both learnt to ski and in 1992 after skiing various other resorts in Europe and the US visited Chatel. We both love the outdoors both in the summer and winter and so luckily do our two daughters. We try and take 2 ski breaks a year and spend at least 3 to 4 weeks at the chalet in the summer along with our 2 Labradors - hence we are dog friendly and not only point you in the direction of the local doctors but also the vets!

We live in West Yorkshire on the edge of the moors near Ilkley. We have both worked extensively worldwide in the Live Events industry but now we work together regenerating house for our rental portfolio and Di is a freelance swimming coach and teacher. Our 2 daughters are in full education one at University and the other in 6th form

Just back from a week in Chalet Le Tadorne. It was fantastic and is a very beautiful chalet with everything you would need. We loved our stay. Loved the hot tub and sauna... the pictures just don't do this place justice.

We have returned from spending a wonderful New Year break in Chalet Le Tadorne. Di & Simon (owners) have put so much thought in the chalet that there isn't anything we didn't have. We had two families totalling 9 in the chalet and there was ample space. The hot tub certainly helped at the end of the evening!

All great, A lovely homely Chalet. Tadorne obviously much loved by the owners and we loved it too. The only slight issue was with the hot water on some evenings & with the hot tub.....not being so hot a couple of times. These were only minor issues and it's pretty luxurious to have the hot tub at all, so to lose a couple of evenings no problem

All in all a great place to holiday, however I would suggest that a car is a must, not essential but certainly makes the super market run easier and better to get to & from the different slopes, but of course all are possible with the buses that pass fairly close by.

A friend of ours introduced us to Chatel in 1993 the year after our first daughter was born. From then on we continued to stay with same company. Both our daughters were looked after by their excellent child care and learnt to ski - the youngest being on skis the day after her second birthday. Our eldest during her gap year in 2010 became a BASI level 2 ski instructor - so she can now teach Mum and Dad a thing or two! Our youngest is a keen downhill mountain biker and can certainly show the older ones the quickest way down the tracks being a 2011 Yorkshire Champion'

Special interest holidays:

Châtel is a great place for summer breaks.

Activity breaks can be organised especially mountain, cross country or downhill biking.

Other activities include walking, horse riding, white water rafting, canyoning, climbing, parapenting, swimming (Châtel has an outdoor pool), golf (locally and further afield) and fishing etc.

Coast/Beach:

Although Châtel does not have a beach there is the River Dranse which offers many interesting areas to explore and lower down there is White Water Rafting before it finally enters Lac Leman - or Lake Geneva as you may know it.

Here you will find many grassed areas for sunbathing and safe swimming in crystal clear water. Along with a myriad of other water based activities.

No tides and no salt - what could be better!

Thonon-les-Bains and Evian-les-Bains are great places to visit.

Travel:

Driving from the French ports takes approx 9hrs.

Geneva is the nearest airport. The average transfer time from Geneva Airport to Châtel (50 miles) is 1 hour 30 minutes. Trains from Geneva Airport go to Aigle in Switzerland which is just a 40 minute away. Transfers from the airport or from Aigle can be arranged.

Although a car is not essential it is recommended for access around the village and ski area.

Distances:

The centre of Châtel is a 15 minute walk and the free navette stops at the bottom of the drive.

Super Châtel departs from the centre of Chatel.

Linga Ski area is 5 minutes by car or navette.

Pre-la-Joux is 15min drive by car or navette.

An average skier can ski from the Pré-la-Joux area to Avoriaz in under an hour!

Thonon and Evian can reach in around 35 mins.

Lac Leman is 40 mins away.

The Swiss border is 10 mins away!

Aigle station can be reached in under 40 mins.

Châtel is a genuine mountain village that has grown from its farming heritage into a charming, picture postcard winter and summer resort. Châtel is situated in the Haute Savoie region of France on the French/Swiss border around an hour and a half south east of Geneva.

The village is full of traditional Alpine chalets and surrounded by mountains, grassy areas and forests. Benefiting from being on the south facing slope at the top of the Abondance Valley ensures great views of the surrounding mountains and plenty of sunshine.

The village possesses a top selection of traditional French restaurants, a diverse range of friendly bars with a great Aprés Ski atmosphere and live music nights. Of course all of your shopping needs are catered for too with mini markets in Châtel and a large supermarket just outside the village.

There are plenty of ski, biking and walking shops, depending on the time of year along with a range of souvenir shops. Last but not least there is a range of speciality food shops so you can stock up on Savoyarde sausages and cheese. All this is within strolling distance of Chalet Le Tadorne.

Chatel is often described as having it's own micro climate. Being tucked away at the head of the Abondance Valley nestling on the French Swiss border it's more like a micro country. Off the beaten track this tranquil picturesque area is unique - yet it is so accessible with Geneva being only 90 minutes away. The whole area is steeped in farming history and together with forestry was the main employment for many years before skiing and tourism came along. Chalet le Tadorne is located along a private road which is essentially a cul de sac with only six properties. Some of these properties are inhabited all year round and others are for rental - either way everyone is really friendly and can speak English - so there is no need to worry if you need help or get stuck!

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: The chalet is laid out over 3 floors, the ground floor having the front door and hallway, utility room, boot and drying cupboards, sauna and garage and services room. Al these are accessible from the hall. A staircase leads to the first floor with the open plan kitchen, eating and living areas. There is a separate toilet. Bedroom 1 is also on this level. A second staircase leads to the the second floor containing the other 3 bedrooms. Chalet Le Tadorne enjoys a peaceful hillside location, a short walk or bus ride from the village with all the amenities of Châtel to hand but near the main ski and bike activity areas. Outside: Off the kitchen area is a covered terrace with table and chairs. This leads to the balcony area with French doors from the dining area. The terrace has a gated staircase giving access to the lower areas. A circular decked area provides ample space for eating, relaxing and sunbathing. During the warmer months deck chairs etc are available. Partly sunk and level with the ground floor is the hot tub area. This is again a decked area with integral lighting where you will find the circular Canadian hot tub which is available all year round. Access is available to the sauna and changing area which is on the ground floor. The garage acts as a ski room in the winter and as a bike store in the summer, bike washing facilities are available and there is a compressor available for tyre inflation. A mobile barbecue is provided which can be used on the balcony or other areas. Four car parking spaces are provided to the front of the chalet. Utility Room: Washing machine, iron and ironing board and various baby equipment including a baby seat and cot. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen, towels, tea towels and welcome pack are included in the price. The chalet will be cleaned at the end of your stay, included in the price. All we ask that you leave the chalet as you found it and put the dishwasher on when you depart. Other: Boot warming cupboard and drying cupboard. Ski and bike storage in the garage. Bike washing facilities. Air compressor for tyre inflation. Sauna with changing room, door to outside Canadian hot tub.
