About the property

Villa in Franqueira, Silves, Central Algarve, Portugal - 10 Mins Drive To Silves Or Messines, 40 Mins To Beaches, Surrounded By Very Peaceful Countryside

Excellent appointed detached villa set in an elevated, private location, with huge 12M pool and extensive private grounds. Ideal for those who wish to get away from it all, yet not totally isolated.

The villa is registered with mandatory Tourism Licence No 4564/AL, Energy Certificate No SCE97757439.

The 3 bedrooms, family bathroom & kitchen lead off from the hallway. The kitchen has a separate utility room housing the washing machine & tumble dryer. The kitchen back door leads to a small terrace which is mainly in the shade with views towards Monchique. There are steps down to a rotary washing line, pegs provided.

The dining area leads from the kitchen through an archway. From here there are 2 steps down to the lounge. This is comfortably furnished with a wrap around 6 seater sofa, plus a single chair set behind the sofa, creating a 'snug type' area where you can read or just sit and enjoy the beautiful views.

The lounge is equipped with a 40" LED TV and DVD player. A set top box which works via the internet provides the main UK TV channels. This is dependent upon broadband speed which may vary and is totally out of our control. Portuguese cable TV is also available which has many English programs. There is a hi-fi and DVD player.

Two patio doors lead from the lounge to the outside terraces & bbq area. Steps down lead to the large 12 x 6m pool and outside shower.

The lounge & all bedrooms have ceiling fans. The master bedroom has a TV (Portuguese channels only) and its own private door to the bbq terrace leading down to the pool and outside shower. Fly screens & shutters are fitted to patio doors & windows.

There are steps up from the bbq terrace to the roof terrace, which has breathtaking 360 deg views. Sun beds are provided on the roof terrace for those who wish to sunbathe privately.

We have installed a rotating solar array in our field adjacent to the villa. This generates electricity for the Portuguese grid and helps keep our villa 'green'.

Solar panels on the roof provides hot water to the villa.

About Deborah Upton

We first came to the Algarve in January 1999, staying at Alvor. We were blown away by the fantastic beaches, beautiful weather (it was 20 deg C then!) and most importantly, the friendly, kind local people.

I had always wanted one day to purchase a holiday home abroad, being of the generation when the first 'package holidays' arrived. Going with my parents on our annual holidays to new and exciting countries. Our visit to Alvor all those years ago convinced us that Portugal was the place to be.

Our first villa was purchased in March 1999 (we decided just to go for it!) as a building project. We soon became the proud owners of a concrete oversite with just 2 brick walls, but set in the most fantastic location amongst its own olive grove in the heart of the Algarvian countryside. With stunning 360 deg views we knew that our project would be challenging, but boy was it worth it. Our Portuguese builders became our friends, and we have ended up with a beautiful home which we called Casa da Franqueira and have successfully rented to our guests since 2002. We only offer our villa for rental for a few short months during the summer, and try to spend as much time as we can there, work permitting.

We decided to purchase a further villa in 2010 with the intention of renting this to guests all year round. Completely different to our home in the hills, this 2 bed villa is perfect for small families or couples who like to be near the beach and all the local tourist attractions. Casa Joan has proved to be very popular with many guests returning.

We count ourselves lucky to have had the chance to discover The Algarve and meet some wonderful people who have become our dear friends.

Why Deborah Upton chose Silves region

A picture speaks a thousand words, but Casa da Franqueira just has to be seen in the flesh to appreciate its stunning location. For Clive and myself, the location sold us the 'concrete slab' as soon as we wound our way up the private drive. Silves is a beautiful medieval town and we both fell in love with the area.

What makes this villa unique

Stunning sun rises, sun sets and if you are lucky to be there during a full moon, you will feel that you can just reach out and touch it! The views from the roof terrace are stunning. At night during August you can watch the shooting stars zoom across the sky... The castle at Silves is lit at night and this adds a certain atmosphere to the night time view, together with the villas in the distance twinkling like stars.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We have enjoyed our stay here, especially the great pool. The weather could have been a bit kinder, but this well equipped villa made up for the few cooler days which forced us to spend more time inside than we would have liked. Congratulations to the owners who have provided a special place for a great holiday. Thanks indeed." Mark & Penny, S. Devon 12-26th June 2014

"Honeymoon holiday! We have had an amazing first trip to Portugal. The villa is perfectly located with Silves on the doorstep - a fantastic town. Castle, cathedral and museum well worth a visit, as are the shops and Café Ingles. The pool and view are wonderful - we swam everyday and had numerous bbqs. Everyone has to try chicken piri-piri - yum! Thanks so much."

"Wonderful honeymoon in the Algarve. Beautiful Villa and beautiful weather - local area really lovely. Enjoyed every minute". The Mirringtons, Cornwall, 26 June - 3 July 2014.

"Our 4th stay here in 10 years - we love it! Sad to go, we'll be back!" Anne, John, Rebecca & Hannah, Warrington. 3 - 10 July 2014.

"Fantastic villa - perfect location for a relaxing holiday away from it all but within reach of plenty to do. Views & sunsets are stunning & star gazing on the roof terrace is a must for all who visit. A beautiful home that the owners are lucky to have found - very jealous! Thanks for sharing it with us. Its been a fantastic place to stay." The Brabiners, July 2015

"Beautiful villa - best we have been to. Weather fabulous. Visited Silves Castle, Monchique village up in the hills - well worth the trip. Had some nice meals in Café Ingles & Rui Marisqueira. Sorry to be leaving." The Stevens, August 2015

"You have found a little piece of paradise here in Casa da Franqueira - amazing sunsets, view, pool, the list goes on. Thank you for allowing us to share this beautiful villa. We have enjoyed eating at some of the recommended restaurants from your previous guests and managed to make friends with some of the locals along the way! We will definitely be coming back." WOW - exactly what you want from a deluxe Villa

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful villa in beautiful surroundings in a beautiful area (Silves). The villa was spotless and had all the home comforts and practical bits and bobs needed for a brilliant family break.

What was also special was the attention to detail provided in the form of little notes dotted around on general "stuff" to do with the villa and area which really helped us acclimatize quickly.

The pool area is as described in other reviews....fab.

Large, clean and safe with remarkable views across the valley towards Silves castle and even further to the coastline.

We ventured out a few times to the "resorts" which were as you would expect.....busy, busy, busy but worth seeing.

Vilamoura Pitch and Putt was fun followed by a walk around the marina followed by a bowl of pasta.

Lagos was also very nice but to be honest we were more than happy grabbing what we needed from the local Silves markets (and of course "Lidl") getting back to the villa pool/BBQ and chilling out enjoying the really hot sunshine then the gorgeous sunsets and awesome views.

Back to the Villa - we had a couple of minor (very minor) maintenance issues which were jumped on by the Managing Agent and sorted really quickly by a lovely English "fix it man". The lady who came to clean the Villa (forgive me but her name now escapes me) was lovely and went about her work with pride and speed.

The Villa has everything in it to keep you entertained if you did feel the need to sit inside which we didn't.

Didn't turn the TV on for the whole 2 weeks which was great although the kids did enjoy rest bite from the sun every now and again to catch up on their Ipad fixes....

All in all one of the best holidays we have had and that's from all of our family which included kids aged at 8/10 and 12 years old.

Only regret - not being able to persuade the kids too sleep out on the roof terrace to watch the shooting stars............

A "sincere" thank you Deborah to you and your team - hopefully be back to explore more of Silves.

Owner's Response: Hi Philippa & Matthew, I am so pleased you all enjoyed your holiday at Casa da Franqueira. It really is a very special place, and as you say, difficult to leave once you are there! Albertina, our maid, is a little 'pocket rocket' and is very helpful. All of our team work very hard to ensure our guests have the best holiday possible, and I will pass on all of your kind comments to Anna, our villa manager. I do hope we may see you again sometime in the future, although our villa is only available for a few short months over the summer season. Wishing you all the best, Deborah

Amazing Villa, beautiful place to rest and Holiday

  • 5 of 5

We went as a family of 4 and we all loved this Villa. The pool was fantastic and the kids were never out of it. All facilities were perfect, we cooked on the BBQ regularly and looked at the view and the sunsetting as well as star gazing on the roof terrace. So comfortable and clean, we will return one day for sure. Very spacious and although a little remote, we enjoyed being away from it all. Highly recommend this Villa for couples, families etc

Owner's Response: As you say, Casa da Franqueira is a little remote, but perfect for that 'chill out' holiday, yet only 15 minutes drive to Silves or Messines where you can find all amenities. If you are looking for peace and tranquillity, this is the perfect place! The pool is a real bonus, being larger that usual, 12 x 6M and great for serious swimming! I am pleased you all had a great time! Best wishes, Deborah

Excellent holiday villa

  • 5 of 5

Large spacious villa, excellently equipped and nicely furnished. All the kitchen equipment you could need with large fridge and lots of cooking space. Large bedrooms (we wondered if an extra guest could be added on a camp bed as plenty space). Large pool with lots of sitting area outside on different levels meant we could all spread out. Wonderful views and sunsets at night. Completely away from it all - 15 mins to Silves for supermarket. Great beaches aprox 35mins. Bulldog buggies definitely worth doing! Very helpful and attentive property manager and cleaners. Wouldn't hesitate to return.

Owner's Response: Hello Marjorie, I am pleased you enjoyed your recent holiday at Casa da Franqueira. As you state, our villa is spacious with lots of room both inside and out, with lots of 'leg room' for everyone! We cannot put up a camp bed for extra guests as our AL (Tourism Licence) only caters for 6 people in total, but thanks for this suggestion. The great advantage of our villa is that you feel totally away from everything, but in reality, you are only a 10 minute drive to Silves for shopping, banks etc. We renewed the fridge last year and decided on an 'extra large' model. This is perfect for people who like to stock up on food once a week and prefer to stay chilling out around the villa. We have received comments from some guests that they find it difficult to leave, even to do the shopping! The sunsets (and sun rise) just have to be seen to be believed, pictures cannot capture the true colours, and this is a fantastic sight. Our villa manager is exceptionally professional, and I know that Anna and her team all work hard to ensure our guests have a great holiday. Best wishes, Deborah

Beautiful villa in an Idyliic location

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic 2 weeks spent in this beautiful villa..did not want to leave. The villa exceeded our expectations...photos cannot capture fully the great views and the peace and tranquility of the villa location. Everything was perfect...the villa is spacious and has all you need for a great holiday.Enjoy coffee on a morning on the terrace looking over the pool, enjoy lunch / dinner by the BBQ and star gaze an amazing sky on a night up on the roof terrace - shooting stars are magical to see. The pool size is amazing - great for us as we have older kids and even with 4 adult sized bodies in the pool you had plenty of space to swim , have 2 lilos etc. We went out and about to beaches at Portimao , Albufeira and they are beautiful but each time we went we were always keen to get back to the comforts of the the villa. There are shops and restaurants nearby in Silves to cater for your needs. We visited the shopping outlets in Faro , Portimao , Guia (ladies the Marypak outlet for shoes is a must) - they are open til midnight so you dont need to miss sightseeing in the day to visit them. Monchique is also not far and offers stunning views of the Algrave. The Sand Fiesa is great to visit - we went at night - again open til late...as is Crazy Golf at Villamoura.

The villa is immaculate and all of the property is well maintained and very attractive.

From enquiry to return home the communication / responsiveness of villa owner and manager has been great ..while there we had no need to call anyone as nothing was needed...all was perfect.

Wish I was there now !! would have no hesitation in recommending this villa to others...you will have a great holiday here...

Owner's Response: Hello Alison, You have certainly summed the villa up in a nutshell! As you say, the photos do not give a true feel of how the villa sits in the landscape. The views both during the day and at night are amazing. Coupled with the peacefulness of the area, this is the perfect holiday villa to truly unwind and regenerate both your body and mind. It sounds like you crammed in a lot during your stay too. Although the villa has the feeling of being secluded, it is only a short drive away from all the tourist attractions, but far enough away to "get away" from it all. The swimming pool is larger than usual, and keen swimmers can really work out and enjoy the extra space. Having many terraced and seating areas around the villa, it is easy to pick the spot which best suits you, sun or shade, all with different views of the countryside and the Monchique mountains in the distance. You say that you did not need to contact the villa management team during you stay. They are always on hand to help and offer advice 24/7 if necessary, but will also just stay in the background leaving you alone if this is preferred. I hope we may see you again one day. Kind regards, Deborah

This villa was everything we had hoped for. We had a wonderful holiday and would certainly recommend it. It was secluded and peaceful, but still only 10 minutes drive from the restaurants and supermarkets of the medieval town of Silves. The villa was clean and welcoming with a huge pool which was a hit with everyone.

Nearest Airport
62 Kilometres
Nearest Train
12 Kilometres
Silves/Tunes (kilometres listed)
Nearest Beach
20 Kilometres
Armacao de Pera
Car: recommended

The beautiful sandy beaches are approx 40 mins drive. The large beach at Gale is fantastic for walking. There is a board walk which runs parallel with the beach & the lagoon bird sanctuary at Salgados. Carlos' beach bar between Gale & Armacao de Pera is great for having a fish supper & watching the sunset. The fisherman's beach at Armacao de Pera is a must. You can watch the boats being launched & brought back onto the beach by tractor & buy fresh fish direct from the fishermen!

Faro airport is approx 40 mins drive. The A22 motorway from Faro to Messines (toll road), then the EN124 heading towards Silves is the most direct route. Alternatively the EN125 is a slower route passing through the villages avoiding toll charges. If you fancy a day out in Lisbon you can catch the fast train from Tunes at 7.30am We would recommend a car for your holiday.

Further Details:

The villa is approx 15 mins drive to both Silves or Messines. Continent & Lidl supermarkets are on the outskirts of Silves. There are several banks in both towns with ATMs, & chemists. Also several local shops, restaurants & bars. The castle & cathederal in Silves is a must. A medieval festival is usually held around the castle in the first 2 weeks in August. Algarve Shopping is at Gale approx 15 mins drive. Here you will find a large Continent supermarket (similar to Tescos) & a cinema complex which is open 7 days a week. There are also several clothes shops, gift shops & a large food hall. These are usually open until midnight. There is also a new shopping complex at Portimao, approx 30 mins drive. At Armacao de Pera, 40 mins drive, you can take a boat trip from the beach to visit the caves along the coastline. There are several fish restaurants here, and Pedro's bar sits on the beach. You can enjoy a cold beer with your feet in the sand! Driving inland you will find 2 reservoirs (barragems). These are very beautiful and worth the drive around the twisty roads. You will come across local bars/restaurants which are worth a visit and the food is freshly cooked. You will not be given a menu, but a choice of a few 'dishes of the day' which are always good value. These local bars do not usually accept credit cards & only accept cash. The norm is to tip approx 10% on top of the bill. The large supermarkets all accept credit cards but the local shops are cash only. You will find the Portuguese people very friendly & helpful. Don't worry about the language barrier, a smile & hand gestures will always get you by! You will probably be taken into the kitchen & shown the food on offer if you can't understand! Each town has a market once a month in rotation, usually on a Monday. The details can be found in the local weekly English newspaper 'The Algarve Resident'.
