About Michael Burton

Michael and Kathryn have two children, John and Melissa.

The house does refect the family - the kitchen is full of useful (and some might say useless) kitchen equipment and cookery books, as food is a major passion for the whole family (and job for Kathryn). Melissa and Kathryn like to enter the cookery competitions

The modern gas barbeque and patio area are Michael's territory

John has a love of the outdoors including fishing, and gardening. It's likely that you'll see John at some point tending has vegetables in the kitchen garden. He always enters the vegetable competitions at the Garrigill gala

Michael Burton purchased this barn in 2009

Why Michael Burton chose Alston Moor

We visited the area a number of times with friends and just loved it.

The scenery is beautiful at any time of year, in any weather, but the walks up to the waterfall in Winter are breathtaking, and it's wonderful to watch the salmon swimming up stream in the Autumn literally 50 metres from the house.

We've always found the people in Garrigill extremely welcoming and there are regular events - craft fairs, fireworks nights, Garrigill gala, carol singing, and even quoits in the Summer

What makes this barn unique

The local pub has open fires and does wholesome home cooked meals, as well as having musical evenings, and various other activities

The possibility of renting a private pool by the hour has always proved popular with our family and friends. You do need to book in advance. It's a lovely way to relax after a busy day before heading back to snuggle in front of the log fire

A beautiful small cottage set in stunning surroundings

  • 4 of 5

A lovely cottage with a warm welcoming feeling. Just a few little areas which would have improved our stay. The second ground floor bedroom would have benifitted from an ensuite bathroom. The walls in the bedroom could have been painted to be finished off. The cottage would also have benefitted from a bath being fitted.

Having said that the little extras offered such as the PlayStation, the DVD’s , children’s toys etc were well thought of.

The compact small kitchen was well equipped and was more than adequate for our needs.

After a long day out it was lovely to come back to a welcoming log burner.

Overall we have had a wonderful week and would definitely visit again without any hesitation.

Peaceful retreat!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in Garrigill! Such a beautiful part of the world! The cottage was lovely and particularly enjoyed having a fire! Comfortably slept our family of 5 although there is limited seating for eating indoors. I would love to return again one day.

A truly wonderful stay in this little cottage. We spent two nights here. Close to loads of attractions. We will defo stay again when we return to do the rest of Hadriens wall. Warm cozy home.. Gorgeous area. Couldnt have asked for more.. Ok.. Maybe a sofa bed in the lounge.. Then it would be ultimately the cream of the crop.
