Villa Semele could hardly be better. Its setting overlooking the Euboean Gulf to the mountains of Attica and Boeatia is a constant delight, especially as the sun sets behind Mt Helicon, where the Muses dance.
Yet it is so easy to get to from Athens Airport by hired car. Within two hours one can be alone in the countryside. Yet everything one needs is nearby: in the village of Nerotrivia, just ten minutes away, is a bakery with delicious fresh-baked pies and a small shop with all basic necessities; and in Politica are bigger shops with fresh vegetables and fruit.
The villa itself has been designed and constructed with considerable care and taste, all from natural materials, wood and stone. It has everything one might need, very thoughtfully arranged so it is easy to move in and be at home immediately. It is furnished very pleasingly, all well chosen wooden items, each with its own charm. The swimming pool is clean and well maintained.
The beach, ten minutes walk away, was deserted when we were there, in pandemic October, and the water was warm and clear. We attempted to climb Mt Dirfys but the sun defeated us. Nonetheless there were wonderful views and cyclamen everywhere. Agali Gorge offers an excellent hike, often in the shade of the cliffs that close in the gorge. Both are 40 minutes away by car.
Ares, our host, was very good to deal with. Quick to respond, helpful, and considerate. We really felt he genuinely wanted us to have a good visit. He was especially sensitive to the uncertainties of the pandemic. I am very grateful to him for making his very special house available so welcomingly.
And Katerina, the housekeeper, who called round after a week to clean the place, keeps it in excellent condition and is herself a delight to meet.
We had one of the most memorable holidays of our long lives, hardly moving beyond the villa in two weeks, so complete was our experience there. Very highly commended.
