About the Owner

We are an English family from the North East of England now living in Ireland. We love Italy and all things Italian. Before stumbling upon the is beautiful area and amazing village, we holidayed all over Italy.

We always had the dream to own a property in Italy and started looking in 2007, It became apparent that flying to France, Nice, opened up the reality of regular easy flights from all over the UK and we visited this area for the first time. As soon as we drove into Pigna we were smitten!

The villa is our second property in Pigna, we had a smaller apartment but in 2010 literally stumbled upon the house, and fell in love again with this new property, the character of the house, beautiful gardens and amazing views.

We love this area , the people, the food . the history, the local customs.

Unique and Beautiful place

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic stay in this lovely medieval villa in a picturesque town in the mountains.

The villa had everything needed for a comfortable and relaxing holiday.

We liked that there was so much to do in the area; visiting other lovely medieval towns such as Dolceacqua. Pigna itself was only a short 25 minute drive to the coast. Visiting Monaco is another must see!

The recommended restaurants only added to the amazing experience we had in this area.

Thank you so much Ian and Sue, we will definitely recommend a stay here to our family and friends.

Picture perfect Pigna!

  • 5 of 5

Thank you so much Ian and Sue for allowing us to stay in your beautiful holiday home in the delightful medieval village of Pigna. We fell in love with the place the moment we arrived, the tranquility, the views, the weather, the rock pools, the pizza, the coffee.... and the pastries in the local coffee shop, were some of the best I've ever tasted - delicious! The locals are so friendly and welcoming and all the villages around have their own unique feel it really is a magical area to explore. The property has a wonderful outlook and is clean and has everything you need. Unfortunately sky wasn't available during our stay but there are so many DVD's to choose from it wasn't an issue at all. Would we stay again? Most definitely, we'd love to explore some more during the summer months, there is so much to see and do we couldn't fit it all in! Thanks again.

Can't rave about this place enough. In the italian hills of Pigna - stunning views. Close enough to the French Riveria to have the best of both, peace and tourist. Fab hills for walking, running and cycling.

Prepare to be enamoured !!

  • 5 of 5

"Prepare to be enamoured!"We stayed in Ian's place from Sunday to Thursday (end of September – beginning of October). We chose not to get a car rental and instead have a real adventure on public transport – this is so easy! We flew in to Nice Airport (flights were £111 each return) and we got the train from Nice to Ventimiglia (€7 each, one way). Then we were supposed to take a bus from Ventimiglia to Pigna, however, there weren't any buses on a Sunday – so I recommend planning for a cab (€45) or travelling on a weekday. We did take the bus back and it only costs €1.50. When we arrived, Georgia, Ian's friend and housekeeper, met us in the village and took us to the villa. Pigna is very hilly, steep in some places, I'd recommend it to keen walkers or those who are generally fit and well.

When we arrived at the villa, we were just blown away. The kitchen looks like it should be in a farmhouse, huge wood burning fire, nice sturdy kitchen table with bench seating, pretty brick work and a real warm, welcoming feel. There was a bottle of wine on the table to welcome us, which was such a nice touch! The feel continued throughout the villa, warmth, cleanliness, everything we needed including hairdryers, a dishwasher, even a couple of paracetamol in the cupboard when I was nursing a sore (red wine) head… we really felt like it was our home.

Outside, we were lucky enough to have two private areas, one with seating, a chiminea, a BBQ, and the cutest fairy lights. The other boasts sun loungers and cushions – I didn't expect to be sunbathing in October, but on one day it was 37C in the sun! Scorching! The beds in the upstairs bedrooms were so comfortable and on an evening we spoilt ourselves with total relaxation, watching movies and eating snacks – because we just don't get to do that at home… There was also an abundance of leaflets, travel guides, business cards and even an Italian dictionary in the villa, which, along with Ian's great handwritten guide book, helped us to make the most of our visit.

Pigna itself is absolutely beautiful. The views are incredible. I wanted to do so much more than we did (visit Dolceaqua a nearby village for instance), but for those taking a short break, try to do the following as an absolute minimum:

1. Go to a local festival. There is one on pretty much every weekend (we went to the Festival of San Michele, the following week was the Festival of Mushrooms….) if not in Pigna, then in the surrounding villages. We were up dancing t

Location

From the Owner

We are very passionate about this area and the village, for us its our paradise. We feel instantly relaxed when we arrive and start to slow down and live as Italians do, enjoying the beautiful things in life, the nearby rivers and rock pools, mountain walks, a hot frothy cappuccino in the local bar, piping hot wood fired oven pizza's, pasta's and wine. Everyone is so friendly and will offer help and advice without hesitation, we have made some great friends! This is the second property we've owned in the village and we feel very lucky to have found such a beautiful place. To ask why we love this area of Italy? the answer is, for us it provides the perfect mix of stunning landscapes contrasted by the exciting hustle and bustle of the coastline running from France along to Italy.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Nice - France at 80 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : very close to the house at 0.2 Kilometres Nearest Train : ventimiglia at 18 Kilometres Nearest Motorway : Ventimiglia at 18 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : in the village at 0.4 Kilometres Nearest Ski : 1.5 hours away at 90 Kilometres Nearest Beach : Ventimiglia at 18 Kilometres

Special interest holidays:

we can help arrange a wide range of activities , including kayaking , organised walking tours etc.

Coast/Beach:

Pigna is located in the northern end of The Italian Riviera,in the region of Liguria 20 minutes drive or indeed bus to the sea.

Monaco is 40 minutes away, about 35 km.

The beautiful coast line of the Italian and French Riviera await. Seaside towns include, Ventimiliga, Bordighera, San Remo on the Italian side and of course Menton, Monaco, Monte Carlo and Nice on the French side of the border - all only up to an hour's drive away. Nearest beach is 20 minutes drive or 18km from Pigna village.

Travel:

Pigna is 1 hour drive from Nice airport in the south of France. A hire car is recommended although airport pick up can be arranged and public transport, bus and trains are available. The public transport sytem is very good - trains link the coast making a hassle free trip to Monaco,Nice or San Remo a great adventure for the day. Pigna is in the nervia valley surrounded by mountains making it a special place with a combination of relaxing countryside, mountains and busy coastline.

Distances:

Surrounded by many beautiful medieval villages - Apricale , Dolceaqua etc - village of sun only 8km away.swimming is 2km away or a brilliant pool 6km.

All have the villages have their own character and even signature dishes. .

It's a special place with a beautiful square with great restaurants, churches, museum etc.Lots og guests simply stay local as it is so tranquil

Other stunning villages include Rochetta Nervina, Isolabona both within 10 minutes drive of Pigna.

Further Details:

The food in this region is very special - Local restaurants, great example is the La posta restaurant in Pigna. Carla the owner is only open lunchtimes, has no menus and cooks the best anti pasti and pasta you will taste! The restaurants in the region tend to have been in the same family for many years and are open all year round. They have to be the locals use them. We can recommend some great places in beautiful locations where the food will not disappoint including 4 within walking distance of the house. There 5 restaurants in the village , wood fired Pizza at the Sul Ponte is a great meeting place and lively spot. The old terme restaurant is a beautiful spot with a classic local menu.Within 10 minutes drive from the village there must be in excess of 20 restaurants including some tucked away special spots.
