4 bedrooms on the edge of Nieul le Virouil, peaceful rural village location. 10 minutes from the market towns of Mirambeau and Jonzac

Our gite is large, cool in the summer, with all modern conveniences including wireless internet and satellite TV. Set in two and a half acres on the edge of a small rural village, it is a private gite with its own enclosed garden. This leads to a private, enclosed, heated swimming pool with an attractive terrace with sun loungers, shade and an area for alfresco dining. There is also access to the wider grounds of the property, if you so require. Our property consists of woodland and meadow, and is bordered by the little river Tarnac at the bottom of the valley. A renovated 18th Century winery, it features stone walls and large oak beams and high ceilings that make for light and airy rooms. Its bedrooms and bathrooms are particularly spacious, making for a very comfortable and relaxing holiday. Nearby are many local vineyards, notably those dotted along the Gironde Estuary, together with market towns and the water spa "Les Antilles" in nearby Jonzac.

About the Owner

We are Richard and Clare Houghton. We fell in love with and bought Chez Touvenot in 2009 after deciding there was more to life than driving around the M25. We have never looked back. We live with Marley, our Jack Russell terrier, Rosie the cat and our chickens providing free range eggs to guests when available. We enjoy the peaceful little village of Nieul le Virouil and the locals test and correct our French regularly.

Beautiful Place

We spent a week at Chez Trouvenot, and wished we'd had longer! It is a large, spacious, clean, and well-appointed gite with ample room inside and out for 2 families. The kids and dads enjoyed the pool table and darts in the games room, and everyone enjoyed the pool and sun terrace. The owners are lovely, laid back, and really welcoming; they were available if needed, but did not intrude. We will definitely return, and can really recommend this property.

We are in a quiet location with wonderful open views over vineyards and sunflowers yet are situated half way between two market towns with easily accessible supermarkets and boulangeries. The building itself is an 18th century converted winery with loads of character and thick stone walls

The beaches at Meschers-Sur-Gironde are a half hour car journey away but are well worth the effort as you can find lovely sandy coves dotted along the estuary. The bigger beaches of St Georges de Didonne and Royan are forty five minutes away and have all kinds of activities going on throughout the summer. The more intrepid explorer might also fancy finding some of the very secluded beaches just beyond Royan on the tip of the Gironde Estuary between St Palais and Les Mathes.


Bordeaux Merignac is the main international airport. It is situated on the edge of the city and is an hours drive from here. The regional airport at La Rochelle is a little further away at an hour and a half, but has been a popular travel point for many of our guests.

The channel ports are a minimum of six hours drive, with the Channel Tunnel around eight hours drive away. Because of our rural location, a car is essential for getting around.


The market towns of Mirambeau and Jonzac are five and ten minutes away respectively. Both have all the supermarkets, shops, banks and facilities that you might expect, together with good bars and restaurants. Our local village has a very pleasant, very French, local bar that also doubles as the Post Office, the grocers store and a cafe. The historic town of Pons is around half an hour away, and the larger towns of Saintes and Cognac are forty five minutes away.

Further Details:

The Charente-Maritime region is famous for Cognac and Pineau as well as the numerous local vineyards, some now producing excellent organic wines. Most have signs indicating the provision of tours, information and the opportunity to buy at reduced prices.

For a special treat, the Mirambeau Chateau is approximately five minutes away. Here one can enjoy a wonderful meal in beautiful surroundings.

We can be contacted to reserve and confirm details of a booking at any time. The client needs to sign and complete our booking form and return it, together with a 20% deposit. The balance of the rent, together with the security deposit, is payable at least six weeks before the start of the rental period. The rental period is from 4.00pm on the first day until 10.00am on the last day.

Changeover Day:
Normal changeover day is Saturday, however, out of season, this is flexible to the demands of our clientele.

  • Outside: There is a spacious, enclosed garden mostly laid to lawn with several shrubs and seasonal flowers. This leads to a private pool with sun loungers and shade. Our pool terrace has been recently renovated and includes table and chairs for al-fresco dining alongside your own barbecue. Access is also available to the two and a half acres of woodland that is part of the property as a whole. At the very bottom of the meadow lies the local River Tarnac, which meanders through our village. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen are included and the property is thoroughly cleaned at the start and end of each booking with a cleaning service available during the stay and prior to departure if required. Other: There is a games room with a pool table, a darts area and many board games, together with a library of paperbacks that make for good holiday reading material.
