Green House In Costa Brava, Spain

Updated: 10-Oct-2016
House in Rupia, Costa Brava, Girona, Catalunia, Spain - Sustainable Villa With Breath Taking Views, Natural Swimming Pool

We would like to welcome you to our house in the Costa Brava. "La Casa de Fang" means the house of clay in Catalan. Clay is one of the basic materials we used to construct the walls, in the traditional "tapial" style used by the ancient iberians of this area. I live here together with Lluís Auquer who is an architect, specialized in the construction and restoration of old houses. Our house is a haven for lovers of "bio-architecture and is not for everyone. When designing the house, Lluis paid special attention to giving the house a bright and airy feel with floor to ceiling windows that seamlessly connect the inner living spaces with the exterior. Inside the house, we use natural materials like wood, sun-baked mud, reeds and natural fabrics like wool, esparto grass and Egyptian cotton. The interior of the house overlooks a natural rainwater pool of water lillies and papyrus.

About the Owner

Hi! My name is Mercè, I'm a teacher of creative dance for kids, born in Barcelona although I've been living in the countryside for the last thirty years, near the "Costa Brava". I'm very happy to offer my wonderful eco-house where you will be able to enjoy some days of absolute sensuality: space, light and water. You'll perceive nature and landscape while you cook, eat or just take rest. I'll be pleased to show you the surrounding area (Baix Empordà) which is spotted with small middle-age towns, and to recommend the best beaches and small bays of the "Costa Brava".

Guestbook comments from the owner

"My instinct is to keep this gem of a property a secret. This large studio, with a separate bathroom, has a very high ceiling, lots of natural wood and plenty of light. It is a tremendously beautiful and calm space. Set to one side of the main property, l’Estudi has its own front entrance and outdoor seating outside the rear sliding glass doors.

The owners, Lluis and Mercy, created a fine balance of privacy and hospitality – with helpful suggestions about things to do, places to visit and general information about the region. We took advantage of the opportunity to have an evening meal (excellent food!) with our hosts and thoroughly enjoyed learning about the sustainable techniques that had been used to build this beautiful property.

Our journey from Girona airport by public transport was easy: bus to the rail station in the centre of Girona and train to Flaca with a short taxi ride to Rupia.

We wanted a quiet break and this was perfect."

Rupia, a place to unwind

  • 5 of 5

Lovely accommodation, simple (no TV, by wifi within reach of the main house), clean and in a beautiful setting. Basic but efficient kitchen.

Hospitable family welcome, and good conversation (more easy if you have Spanish, or better, Catalan) - with an occasional pot of home made preserves brought over for breakfast.

A couple of simple village shops, with everything needed for meals, butcher, baker, general store and a welcoming local bar with excellent and inexpensive tapas and main meals.

Within easy reach of Girona and the Costa Brava - you'll need a car.

Other highlights: the dawn chorus (we were there in the late spring) and the ribbitting frogs at night..........and beware the sheep at rush hour.

Activity and Interests

Special interest holidays:

The enjoyable and relaxing village offers live music every Wednesday down in the main cute square. Many international music festivals are held around the area in summer, as the infamous Cap Roig festival (Palafurgell), Porta Ferrada (Sant Feliu de Guixols), Music of the World (Torroella te Montgri). Diving and snorkeling centers in the Illes Medes, l'Estartit. Dalì museum in Figueres just 20 min driving. Bike rental in Parlavà (5 min from Rupià). A conspicuous number of small country roads, which were the actual roads toward villages nearby, invite people to discover the local area by walk or cycling.

Playa de Pals, 15 minutes driving; Playas de Begur 20 minutes driving; the wild beach of Castell and el Crit, 25 minutes driving. If you like wild beaches we recommend "Castell and el Crit" - idyllic place for a pleasant day on the beach It is a pristine large beach surrounded by pines and Iberic ruins just on the top of the hill. Perfect for picnic and 'siesta' under the pine's shadows.

Girona- Costa Brava (Ryanair) is the nearest airport, 35 minutes drive, possibility to hire a car in the airport. Barcelona airport is at 90 minutes drive. If you want to move around we recommend to hire a car but if you want to stay quiet you can arrive from Girona or Barcelona airport by train to Flaça rail station and then take there a taxi to Rupià (3km drive).

Barcelona is at 90 minutes driving and by train. Girona is the nearest city at 35 minutes driving. Its old quarter, the Jewish quarter is known around the world as well as the hanging houses in the river. We really recommend visiting both cities as they offer an incredible cultural and historical heritage.

Further Details:

There are many vineyards in the area, good wine and food. All the large towns have supermarkets and banks, most of the villages have restaurants/bars and many traditional bakery as well. For nature lovers the bird sanctuary of Aiguamolls de l' Emporda near Sant Pere Pescador is about 40 minutes driving.
