About the property

Cottage-central yet peaceful location-3 bedrooms-2 bathrooms-parking-views-walks and biking from the door-wildlife garden-log burner-refurbished whilst retaining character

Acorn Cottages' location makes it a great base for touring the lake district, for all sorts of adventure activities (water, bike or fell based) or for just relaxing and taking in the quiet beauty of the area. Pond dipping at the local tarn is a firm favourite with younger guests and for the grown ups there are the excellent, and numerous, local pubs all serving amazing food and local ales. We sleep 5/6 in our three bedrooms (king, double and single - cot/camp bed for a 6th younger guest). All beds will be made up for your arrival and towels, tea, coffee, milk and homemade shortbread are provided. We have equipped and furnished our cottage with everything we would want at home so all you need is to bring yourselves! We hope you enjoy the cottage and the area as much as we do - look out for the local wildlife (red squirrel, deer, woodpeckers and...rabbits). If you come in winter you have the log burner to snuggle in front of and if you come in the summer you may find the sunny patio hard to leave. Well behaved pets are welcome. We have parking for two cars and a lockable shed for bikes etc.

Our cottage has three bedrooms - king, double and single. A kitchen/dining room. A living room with log burner and access to the patio and rear garden. Two bathroooms. Wifi, large screen TV, DVD player, ipod docking in all bedrooms. Wide selection of local books, maps, routes and DVD's

About Christine Briggs

We, the Briggs family have owned Acorn Cottage for 10 years now. We live, work and go to school in Kendal (about 40 mins away). We love the Lake District and ALL it has to offer. For many years we had used the car park at Hodge Close Quarry as a base for our various activities and walks for pub lunches! Eventually we were in the right place at the right time and were lucky enough to purchase Acorn Cottage which we adore and escape to as often as we can. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

Christine Briggs purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Christine Briggs chose Coniston

We love the Lake District. We love the peace and quiet, the beauty of the hills and lakes. When we bought the cottage our children were very young and they have enjoyed growing up with walks from the door - starting with down hill trips to the pub for lunch and ending up with full day fell walks! We road and mountain bike from the door and enjoy kayaking and sailing on Coniston. The location, for us, could not be better. It is 40 minutes from home and yet we never fail to feel we have been away on holiday, coming back home relaxed, rejuvenated and energised.

What makes this cottage unique

Acorn Cottage's location, in our opinion, could not be better for whatever sort of holiday you are looking for whether it be touring, bike, fell or water based. Our guests have commented (see reviews) on what a great base it makes and how all generations have loved it!

The benefits of ample parking, walking/biking from the door and two bathrooms make for a pleasurable experience.

It has a central Lake District location which makes it excellent for sightseeing. It has numerous activities available straight from the door and yet it is situated in quiet picturesque valley. You will be hard pressed to find a better located holiday cottage!

Further Details:

Acorn Cottage's location makes it a great base for all sorts of adventure activities, water or fell based, or for just relaxing and taking in the quiet beauty of the area.

One of the most outstanding, and far reaching, views of the Lake District can be had by taking a short walk from the cottage up Holme Fell.

Pond dipping at the tarn on the way up is a firm favourite with younger guests.

As well as all the Lakeland Fells to have a go at there is some fantastic mountain biking locally. There are family friendly bridleways as well as some challenging technical routes all from the door! There is also the North Face Trail in Grizedale Forest.

For road cyclists there are the famous passes of Hardknott and Wrynose to challenge you.

Climbers have to look no further than the old Hodge Close Quarry itself for some seriously challenging routes.

Coniston Water will keep all water enthusiasts happy - there is sailing, canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing, rowing boats and electric boats for hire.

For those wanting to take their excercise a little more leisurely electric bikes are available for hire locally too!!

We are lucky enough to have three very well know pubs to hand - The Drunken Duck, The Three Shires and the Britannia Inn.

Coniston also has a fine selection of pubs, and local ales, for you to tick off your list (The Sun Inn is our favourite).

Coniston also supplies you with a Co-op supermarket, a butchers (amazing home made sausages - try the garlic and black pepper and, of course, the Cumberland sausage), a post office, petrol station, cash machine, newsagents, cafes and take away fish and chips!

This outstandingly beautiful area has inspired many writers, poets and painters. We hope it inspires you too!!

We stayed with our three children and had an amazing time. I like being able to walk from the door and not having to get in the car for the week . The cottage is very cosy, comfortable , clean and well equipped .

Wonderful Cottage in a Peaceful Secluded Location

  • 5 of 5

Our family of three adults and a baby spent two nights at Acorn Cottage.

The cottage was extremely well equipped with plenty of kitchen utensils and also including a baby cot. Everything worked, internet connection was good, decoration was clean and new, so nothing to complain about.

The location could not be better with walks straight into the forests starting at the front door.

The nature is exceptional, although we did not see any red squirrels we did see deer in the fields behind the cottage and the night sky is fantastic.

We had a wonderful time. It's a very comfortable cottage, just right for our family.

  • 5 of 5

Cozy cottage in a beautiful location. Everything was as described. It was very nice to find biscuits on the table and clear instructions for everything. They have thought of everything!

One bit of advice for future visitors is to make sure you shop before driving up. It's a winding trip back to town, which you probably won't want to make in the dark.

Cosy terraced cottage in quiet and beautiful setting

  • 4 of 5

Apart from having the wrong key code we had a wonderful stay. There is no mobile phone signal nearby so I suggest making certain of all the details before arriving.

The property is well stocked, has broadband and wifi, Freesat TV. All essentials for the kids.

There are many walks and cycle routes from the door. Perfect central location in a quiet area for those who want to experience the Lake District but not with the crowds.
