About the property

Cottage-central yet peaceful location-3 bedrooms-2 bathrooms-parking-views-walks and biking from the door-wildlife garden-log burner-refurbished whilst retaining character

Acorn Cottages' location makes it a great base for touring the lake district, for all sorts of adventure activities (water, bike or fell based) or for just relaxing and taking in the quiet beauty of the area. Pond dipping at the local tarn is a firm favourite with younger guests and for the grown ups there are the excellent, and numerous, local pubs all serving amazing food and local ales. We sleep 5/6 in our three bedrooms (king, double and single - cot/camp bed for a 6th younger guest). All beds will be made up for your arrival and towels, tea, coffee, milk and homemade shortbread are provided. We have equipped and furnished our cottage with everything we would want at home so all you need is to bring yourselves! We hope you enjoy the cottage and the area as much as we do - look out for the local wildlife (red squirrel, deer, woodpeckers and...rabbits). If you come in winter you have the log burner to snuggle in front of and if you come in the summer you may find the sunny patio hard to leave. Well behaved pets are welcome. We have parking for two cars and a lockable shed for bikes etc.

Our cottage has three bedrooms - king, double and single. A kitchen/dining room. A living room with log burner and access to the patio and rear garden. Two bathroooms. Wifi, large screen TV, DVD player, ipod docking in all bedrooms. Wide selection of local books, maps, routes and DVD's

About Christine Briggs

We, the Briggs family have owned Acorn Cottage for 10 years now. We live, work and go to school in Kendal (about 40 mins away). We love the Lake District and ALL it has to offer. For many years we had used the car park at Hodge Close Quarry as a base for our various activities and walks for pub lunches! Eventually we were in the right place at the right time and were lucky enough to purchase Acorn Cottage which we adore and escape to as often as we can. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

Christine Briggs purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Christine Briggs chose England

We love the Lake District. We love the peace and quiet, the beauty of the hills and lakes. When we bought the cottage our children were very young and they have enjoyed growing up with walks from the door - starting with down hill trips to the pub for lunch and ending up with full day fell walks! We road and mountain bike from the door and enjoy kayaking and sailing on Coniston. The location, for us, could not be better. It is 40 minutes from home and yet we never fail to feel we have been away on holiday, coming back home relaxed, rejuvenated and energised.

What makes this cottage unique

Acorn Cottage's location, in our opinion, could not be better for whatever sort of holiday you are looking for whether it be touring, bike, fell or water based. Our guests have commented (see reviews) on what a great base it makes and how all generations have loved it!

The benefits of ample parking, walking/biking from the door and two bathrooms make for a pleasurable experience.

It has a central Lake District location which makes it excellent for sightseeing. It has numerous activities available straight from the door and yet it is situated in quiet picturesque valley. You will be hard pressed to find a better located holiday cottage!

A lovely and well equipped house in a great location

Fantastic quiet location just a little away from the busier spots. Many interesting walks and cycle paths from the doorstep including somestriking former mining works. I would choose to return.

A blissfully secluded spot away from the tourist trail.

  • 4 of 5

We were delighted to finally arrive at Acorn Cottage at the end of a long, narrow track in the heart of Coniston's historic mining area. The pictures on the website were very accurate - the view from the picnic table outside stole the show and we frequently enjoyed pots of tea and Christine's (very welcome) shortbread here after our long walking days. For even deeper peace and solitude, I retired to the bench at the bottom of the garden, where I had the grazing sheep in the adjoining field for company! The cottage itself was toasty warm and comfortable and had everything we needed (though perhaps more than one tea-towel would be useful as we had to go and buy some more). The five of us (two adults and three growing teenagers) fitted in comfortably - we just had to be organised with rucksacks etc downstairs. Upstairs, there was plenty of room in the bedrooms for personal luggage. The two bathrooms were a Godsend (though the booster only provides a shallow bath each time) and the storage heaters kept the cottage at a comfortable temperature and could be turned up as needed. Thank you so much for providing so many maps, walks and local information - which we put to good use. We would recommend many of the walks from the door. We had a much-needed week away from the rat race and would not hesitate to book again. Thanks again for sharing your peaceful corner of the Lakes, Christine.

Owner's Response: Delighted you enjoyed the cottage and it's location. We love it! Sorry to hear you only managed a shallow bath...If the tank is left to fill with hot water there is plenty for a good wallow!

Lovely cottage, fantastic views

  • 4 of 5

Stayed at Acorn Cottage for a weekend with my family celebrating my 60th birthday. Travelled in the evening so couldn't see anything but winding roads and trees, but when morning came I was delighted to see the location. Beautiful surroundings.

The cottage itself has all mod cons but still retaines original features and was very comfortable and clean.

The shortbread biscuits , which were waiting for us on arrival, were yummy.

Would love to spend a week at the cottage and will definitely be returning.

Further Details:

Acorn Cottage's location makes it a great base for all sorts of adventure activities, water or fell based, or for just relaxing and taking in the quiet beauty of the area.

One of the most outstanding, and far reaching, views of the Lake District can be had by taking a short walk from the cottage up Holme Fell.

Pond dipping at the tarn on the way up is a firm favourite with younger guests.

As well as all the Lakeland Fells to have a go at there is some fantastic mountain biking locally. There are family friendly bridleways as well as some challenging technical routes all from the door! There is also the North Face Trail in Grizedale Forest.

For road cyclists there are the famous passes of Hardknott and Wrynose to challenge you.

Climbers have to look no further than the old Hodge Close Quarry itself for some seriously challenging routes.

Coniston Water will keep all water enthusiasts happy - there is sailing, canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing, rowing boats and electric boats for hire.

For those wanting to take their excercise a little more leisurely electric bikes are available for hire locally too!!

We are lucky enough to have three very well know pubs to hand - The Drunken Duck, The Three Shires and the Britannia Inn.

Coniston also has a fine selection of pubs, and local ales, for you to tick off your list (The Sun Inn is our favourite).

Coniston also supplies you with a Co-op supermarket, a butchers (amazing home made sausages - try the garlic and black pepper and, of course, the Cumberland sausage), a post office, petrol station, cash machine, newsagents, cafes and take away fish and chips!

This outstandingly beautiful area has inspired many writers, poets and painters. We hope it inspires you too!!
