Cottage-central yet peaceful location-3 bedrooms-2 bathrooms-parking-views-walks and biking from the door-wildlife garden-log burner-refurbished whilst retaining character

Acorn Cottages' location makes it a great base for touring the lake district, for all sorts of adventure activities (water, bike or fell based) or for just relaxing and taking in the quiet beauty of the area. Pond dipping at the local tarn is a firm favourite with younger guests and for the grown ups there are the excellent, and numerous, local pubs all serving amazing food and local ales. We sleep 5/6 in our three bedrooms (king, double and single - cot/camp bed for a 6th younger guest). All beds will be made up for your arrival and towels, tea, coffee, milk and homemade shortbread are provided. We have equipped and furnished our cottage with everything we would want at home so all you need is to bring yourselves! We hope you enjoy the cottage and the area as much as we do - look out for the local wildlife (red squirrel, deer, woodpeckers and...rabbits). If you come in winter you have the log burner to snuggle in front of and if you come in the summer you may find the sunny patio hard to leave. Well behaved pets are welcome. We have parking for two cars and a lockable shed for bikes etc.

Our cottage has three bedrooms - king, double and single. A kitchen/dining room. A living room with log burner and access to the patio and rear garden. Two bathroooms. Wifi, large screen TV, DVD player, ipod docking in all bedrooms. Wide selection of local books, maps, routes and DVD's

About the Owner

We, the Briggs family have owned Acorn Cottage for 10 years now. We live, work and go to school in Kendal (about 40 mins away). We love the Lake District and ALL it has to offer. For many years we had used the car park at Hodge Close Quarry as a base for our various activities and walks for pub lunches! Eventually we were in the right place at the right time and were lucky enough to purchase Acorn Cottage which we adore and escape to as often as we can. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

Lovely cozy cottage. Rather isolated location but wonderful scenery

  • 4 of 5

We were a party of 3 (+1little dog) ages ranging from 30 to 90. The cottage was very cozy and had everything we needed, the access road is typically narrow & windey the directions provided were excellent. We found some lovely easy walks that all managed. We visited Ulverston Christmas market, hoping to make this an annual event.

Beautifully appointed, cosy, midterraced cottage

  • 5 of 5

Acorn cottage is a former quarryman's cottage set apart from the main thoroughfare into Coniston by a mile long drive into the Lakeland countryside. The area surrounding the cottage is rich with mining heritage - the disused Hodge Close Quarry is at the end of the road and the cottage sits amidst a labyrinth of pathways from Holme Fell to Tiberthwaite and Little Langdale. In Autumn the lakes were spectacular and the views from the cottage windows were fantastic.

The cottage itself was well equipped and attractively decorated - particularly the two bathrooms and kitchen. The water system takes a little managing - don't shower and flush- but this was explained in the handbook. We particuluarly appreciated having a dishwasher and washing machine to hand and the "Smart" tv played from our Netflix and Amazon accounts.

You do need a torch if you arrive late as there is no streetlighting - and the cottage is midterrace so you should be aware of neighbours.

Although the cottage feels isolated it is a few minutes drive from Coniston and there are many other walks from the doorstep. There is a co-op in Coniston for supplies and also a deli and butchers.

Lovely shortbread awaited us on arrival and we really enjoyed sitting out in the garden watching the sheep!

A peaceful Lakeland getaway to celebrate my 57th birthday

  • 4 of 5

Superbly maintained terraced cottage in a secluded location. Excellent kitchen facilities and nice décor in all of the rooms. No phone reception so the WiFi was welcome (not to be surfing all day but as three parties were descending on the cottage it was possible to keep in touch). Behind the cottage is an easy late afternoon stroll to the summit of Holme Fell - of modest height but good views. Canoe hire is available at Coniston. We hired canoes for 2 hours on a windless morning and enjoyed gliding across the water. If you are uncomfortable with silence (I'm not, I love it) then don't go here! Thanks for a memorable and enjoyable stay.

Fantastic location and lots to do straight from the cottage

  • 4 of 5

The location is fantastic and lots to do straight from the cottage. There are loads of maps for recommended walks and cycles which was much appreciated. The cottage was very cosy and well equipped. The only thing was we expected milk along with the tea and coffee on arrival but there wasn't any even though it says on the website it will be provided on arrival. The shortbread was lovely though! And the beds are very comfy too.

Great location, lovely cottage

  • 4 of 5

Fantastic weekend in a great cottage. Kitchen was excellent and enough room for a nice family dinner. Lounge had lovely views towards Holme Fell and the weather was good enough to allow us to use the picnic table in the garden. Bedrooms all very well presented and beds nice and comfy. Bathrooms were clean and having two was a good bonus for our family weekend.

The drive up the lane to the cottage is a little narrow and can be tricky when you meet another car but this is the Lake District and the setting is worth the minor effort. Nice walk into Little Langdale and Coniston not far either.

The only slight negative was that previous visitors must have had a dog and so there was a strong wet dog smell on arrival. Had to hoover the living room to get rid of some remnant dog hairs and a nice scented candle from the co-op in Coniston got rid of the dog smell.

Would definitely visit again and highly recommended.

Owner's Response: I'm delighted you enjoyed your weekend at our cottage but dismayed that the lounge wasn't as it should have been. I had to use a stand in whilst taking my daughter to uni...I won't be using them again!! Very glad it didn't put you off and you're coming back to enjoy fantastic area again.

Delighful cottage, well equipped and clean. Amazingly comfortable beds made for a good nights sleep

  • 5 of 5

We all loved our stay in your lovely cottage. All that was missing was a pan scrubber!! Hence we had to leave a dish steeping after making scrambled egg. I would suggest that you put in the "How to get there" instructions that you state the cottage is about a mile and a quarter from the road. We thought after a mile that we had gone wrong and my daughter turned round at the big house as she thought the same. Just a suggestion but a lovely time was had by alI

The Three Shires Inn

From the Owner

We love the Lake District. We love the peace and quiet, the beauty of the hills and lakes. When we bought the cottage our children were very young and they have enjoyed growing up with walks from the door - starting with down hill trips to the pub for lunch and ending up with full day fell walks! We road and mountain bike from the door and enjoy kayaking and sailing on Coniston. The location, for us, could not be better. It is 40 minutes from home and yet we never fail to feel we have been away on holiday, coming back home relaxed, rejuvenated and energised.

Further Details:

Acorn Cottage's location makes it a great base for all sorts of adventure activities, water or fell based, or for just relaxing and taking in the quiet beauty of the area.

One of the most outstanding, and far reaching, views of the Lake District can be had by taking a short walk from the cottage up Holme Fell.

Pond dipping at the tarn on the way up is a firm favourite with younger guests.

As well as all the Lakeland Fells to have a go at there is some fantastic mountain biking locally. There are family friendly bridleways as well as some challenging technical routes all from the door! There is also the North Face Trail in Grizedale Forest.

For road cyclists there are the famous passes of Hardknott and Wrynose to challenge you.

Climbers have to look no further than the old Hodge Close Quarry itself for some seriously challenging routes.

Coniston Water will keep all water enthusiasts happy - there is sailing, canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing, rowing boats and electric boats for hire.

For those wanting to take their excercise a little more leisurely electric bikes are available for hire locally too!!

We are lucky enough to have three very well know pubs to hand - The Drunken Duck, The Three Shires and the Britannia Inn.

Coniston also has a fine selection of pubs, and local ales, for you to tick off your list (The Sun Inn is our favourite).

Coniston also supplies you with a Co-op supermarket, a butchers (amazing home made sausages - try the garlic and black pepper and, of course, the Cumberland sausage), a post office, petrol station, cash machine, newsagents, cafes and take away fish and chips!

This outstandingly beautiful area has inspired many writers, poets and painters. We hope it inspires you too!!

Facilities

From the Owner

Acorn Cottage's location, in our opinion, could not be better for whatever sort of holiday you are looking for whether it be touring, bike, fell or water based. Our guests have commented (see reviews) on what a great base it makes and how all generations have loved it! The benefits of ample parking, walking/biking from the door and two bathrooms make for a pleasurable experience. It has a central Lake District location which makes it excellent for sightseeing. It has numerous activities available straight from the door and yet it is situated in quiet picturesque valley. You will be hard pressed to find a better located holiday cottage!
