About Alastair Rees

Hello. My name is Alastair Rees and I own North Lodge. Although I live in the East of Scotland, I come from the Kilmun area and have family and many friends there. That is why I purchased North Lodge. It allows me and my family to visit my family in the area. It is a beautiful part of the world that is close to Glasgow and Edinburgh but feels a million miles away. My aim is to ensure that you have a wonderful time when you stay at North Lodge and I am always aiming to improve things wherever possible and encourage guests to let me know how things can be improved. I provide local maps and guides in the Lodge with local knowledge of places to visit and things to do.

Alastair Rees purchased this apartment in 2003

Why Alastair Rees chose Dunoon

I bought this property principally because of its beautiful location. I grew up in the Kilmun and Rashfield area and know it well. The school I went to is now a well known chainsaw carvers property and is well worth a visit! I still have family and many friends in the area and use the property often for weekend visits with my own family. That way I can ensure that it remains comfortable and is well maintained. I love the area primarily because it is absolutely beautiful at any time of the year. Winter time can be fantastic when there are dry sunny days and you can sit on the terrace in a sun trap and believe it or not, bask in the Scottish winter sun! It is peaceful and has views over the river that are constantly changing due to the tidal nature of the river at this point. There is always something to grab your attention. including seals at high tide, ospreys fishing at the head of the loch and even otters can be seen if you are patient and careful.

What makes this apartment unique

The wonderful views from the covered terrace which is a great suntrap are the highlight of this property overlooking the beautiful tidal River Echaig. From the comfort of the benches, you can sip a G & T while watching Herons, geese, ducks, otters, kingfishers, ospreys and even seals (at high tide)! Delightful Red squirrels feed from the nut feeder inches from the kitchen sink and many species of birds can be seen with the highlight being our recent seasonal visitor the osprey often seen fishing at the head of the Loch.

Owner's Response: It find it disappointing that this guest has decided to pen and submit this review almost three weeks after what was a very unfortunate and unanticipated turn of events whilst neglecting to mention some very important facts. The facts are: There was a serious mix up with a temporary cleaner that resulted in Ms Milne arriving to a house that had not been prepared or cleaned after the guests who had vacated that day at 11am ("like someone had been using the accommodation"). That is why the beds were unmade, there were towels lying around and the house hadn't been cleaned or tidied. The cleaner did subsequently arrive in the early evening and apologised profusely for not preparing the Lodge in time for their arrival. The cleaner then offered to prepare the Lodge while Ms Milne and her partner went out for dinner but they refused. If they had accepted and stayed I would have paid for their dinner and they could have had a pleasant stay. However, Ms Milne decided that they were not going to stay so she vacated that night and did not actually stay in Lodge at all. I was on holiday at the time which is partially the reason why there was breakdown in the normal changeover procedure and a temporary cleaner was being used. As soon as I heard what had happened I was horrified and apologised profusely and immediately refunded Ms Milne in full. This is the first time this has happened in over ten years of receiving guests to North Lodge and if you read previous reviews here and on the North Lodge air b n b pages you will see that all of our many guests are very happy with the Lodge and the personal care and attention that they receive when staying at North Lodge. Please read other reviews before basing any decision to stay on this review. Kind Regards Alastair Rees

Great house in a great area

  • 5 of 5

This house was perfect for us. We were a family of 5, 2 parents and 3 teenage/grown-up children. The house was spacious and every thing worked just fine.

The area is also great. We visited Benmore Botanic Gardens, Pucks Glen and the Aboretum, all three within 2 miles and all 3 definetly worth visiting. Especially Pucks Glen.

Good spot for a family get together

  • 5 of 5

The property suited us well - we were getting together with our 2 adult children and their partners. We loved the front room/diner and all other rooms were fine. Warmed up nicely once we got heating on. Great place from which to explore local countryside. Visited Ben More Botanical Gardens and Pucks Glen - both well worth a visit. Altogether we had a great few days away.

Lovely House in Kilmun

  • 5 of 5

Lovely spacious, comfortable house, an absolute home from home, very well equipped, beautiful views and a great location. There are great walks, Beinn Mhor, the Bishops Seat, Pucks Glen, Kilbride Hill, Kilmun Hill, to name just a few. Dunoon is a wonderful small town which has everything you need. The Cot House is just 5 minutes walk away and has a good range of food for day to day shopping.

Special interest holidays:

If you love walking through some of Scotlands finest woodlands then this is the place for you in Argyll Forest park which is again within the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. The World faous Benmore Gardens are four miles away and there are many forestry commission marked paths for walking and cycling (mountain bike preferred as the tracks can be rough not smooth)

If you are interested in Angling then this is the place to stay as it overlooks the River Echaig which has some great Salmon Fishing (permit required). There are good locations nearby or sea trout fishing as well as Brown and Rainbow trout in Bishops Glen behind Dunoon. In the summer, mackerel are easily caught from piers and even the shore. Contact the Dunoon Angling club for more details. If walking is your thing, then this is the right place as the walking in the area is amongst the finest in Scotland.

Travel:

To get to the mainland taking a car ferry is recommended. This is a pleasant sail across the Firth of Clyde and there are 4 ferries per hour during the day. Glasgow airport is about 1hr 15mins away by car including the time required for the ferry. Although there is an excellent, regular bus service to and from Dunoon, the use of a car is recommended if staying at North Lodge.

Distances:

Dunoon 5 miles, Inverary 34 miles, Oban 71 miles, Glasgow 29 miles (inc ferry) 68 miles (by road). Edinburgh 82 miles (inc ferry)

Further Details:

North Lodge is situated in the Cowal Peninsular within the Southern limits of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park and the Argyll Forest Park. Close to North Lodge there are numerous beautiful places and areas to visit including the Kilmun Arboretum, (access is 200m along the road) planted on the hill directly behind the Lodge, an area beautiful and unique in Scotland because of the 162 tree species planted, not individually, but in ‘mini-forests’. You won’t see single Monkey-Puzzle or Mountain Hemlock trees, but rather you will be able to admire groves of remarkable exotic trees collected from around the world 200m along the road or 2 miles away, the World Famous Benmore Botanic Gardens, sister gardens to the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh. www.rbge.org.uk/the-gardens/benmore. The beautiful "ferngulley" of Pucks glen is 1.5 miles away and is a magical place to visit. Towards Loch Eck there are numerous waymarked walks that extend for miles and pass through some of Argylls most attractive scenery. The Holy Loch and the Firth if Clyde provides some of Britains best sailing conditions and is world famous. Quadmania is located at nearby Blairmore where you can ride on quad bikes through great scenery and along various tracks. There are large supermarkets cafes and restaraunts in nearby Dunoon and closer to Kilmun are the famous Coylet Inn, the Pier Hotel and the Whistlefield Inn that has regular folk music sessions. Inverary is located on Loch Fyne 38 miles to the North where the seat of the Duke of Argyll is located. Also located closer to Kilmun is the Loch Fyne Oyster Bar where the West Coast of Scotlands fine sea food can be sampled and bought.
