The Buttery is a wonderful self-catering holiday home in Mortehoe, near Woolacombe, North Devon. We bought this property in the village's Victorian 'crescent' in July 2010 and have worked non-stop since then until July 2011, together with our excellent builder Pearce Barnstaple, to create what we feel is an ideal holiday home in a perfect North Devon village. The Buttery is now our own much-loved family holiday home and is also available for rent. If you choose The Buttery for a holiday we aim to make you want to come back again and again.

About the Owner
I am an architect living in London. I know North Devon well, having holidayed here and worked on design projects in the area. Mortehoe has always struck me as a gem - amazing location and people, and not spoiled by excessive tourism. When in 2010 my husband Dominic and I had the opportunity to buy a run-down hotel/restaurant in the terrace at the heart of the village we jumped at the chance. The next 12 months were incredibly busy and satisfying ... with a huge effort by excellent local builder and a lot of design, structural work, conservation, inspiration and management, The Buttery was reborn as our own holiday home, which we are also going to rent out. We hope to have a lot of the same guests renting year after year. We would welcome you to our house in Mortehoe!

Great Holidat Base and Retreat
We stayed in both the Buttery and Cromlech ( together the Crescent) and it accommodated our large family group ( 7 months to grandparents) in bright airy rooms, well appointed in both houses. Rear and front galleries to the properties added an extra little sun time for the non-active. There is no garden area which is fine if you get the good weather but could be a drawback otherwise. The houses were roomy and well equipped in terms of kitchen, and utility rooms. Access between the two by the rear was easy and the main dining in the Buttery accommodated us all for meals in the evening. The whole place allowed for time together and private time as people wanted it. The village of Mortehoe is a delightful place and base with a little bit of everything in terms of meeting needs, post office, shops, national trust property, pubs with the Chichester Arms being excellent to drop in or eat as we did. The towns of Ifracombe and Woolacombe are easily accessible. Parking for tow cars right outside the property is very tight but workable and extra spaces can be obtained through the owners. On that level Dominic is very attentive to his clients. Nothing was too much trouble and any questions were answered by email promptly and efficiently. There is plenty of information in the house in the pack to give you some sense of the whole place too. Good surfing, good beach-combing, good walks, good souvenir shopping, good holiday. Really pleased with the whole experience.
Brilliant accommodation for big groups
We had an absolutely brilliant stay at the Crescent. It was great, family friendly, accommodation for a big group, with really nice extra touches like lots of games and books, places to hang the wetsuits and body boards to use. Dominic the owner couldn't have been more helpful, and provided lots of information in advance of our stay. It was only a short (although slightly hilly!) walk down to Woolacombe beach to enjoy the sand and surf and there were lots of lovely things right on the doorstep too - pub, deli, delicious fish and chips! Would highly recommend.
Beautiful, well equipped house in a great location
I loved my first visit to The Crescent and Mortehoe. The houses had everything you could want including somewhere to hang and dry wetsuits. They are well located near the beach and coastal walk.
The propery is perfect for families and groups of friends. Fantastic location, epic interiors (kitchens are brill), good living rooms!
Seperate utility room is great for wetsuits/anything water related.
A fantastic stay
Great houses, beautiful village!
We had an amazing stay - the houses were so well equipped for the 12 of us to cook a feast. The kitchen dining rooms were perfect spaces to socialize yet there was plenty of space for those who wanted to sneak off for some peace and quiet. Great facilities - love the number of toilets and bathrooms, which made it very easy for us all to get showered after a surf at woolacombe. The village shops and nearby woolacombe had everything you could want to stock the fridge. Would definitely come back again!
Paradise whatever the season...
This is my second visit to The Crescent. It will not be my last. Each time I have stepped through the door, I feel as though I have come home (from home). The kitchens are plentiful in their communal feel - accommodating without a groan a good rabble of people young and old. The living rooms are comfortable and easy to live in - sunlight being the main feature. There are so many bedrooms, each slightly different in feel and design. Fantastic bathrooms, kit and linens - you will not want to go home (from this new home). Charlotte x

Activity and Interests
10 minutes very pleasant walk to Grunta Beach - a bit longer to get back up the hill! Walking distance to other great beaches at Combesgate, Barricane and Woolacombe, and 20 mins drive to Croyde beach.
Buses pass the house (to Barnstaple). National Cycle Route 27 is also directly outside the house. Nearest rail station: Barnstaple. Airports: Exeter, Bristol. Driving: M5, North Devon Link Road.
At the heart of North Devon's best village! 10 mins drive to Ilfracombe, 30 mins cycle to Ilfracombe via disused railway, 20 mins drive to Barnstaple.
Landline phone: free outgoing calls to UK landlines. Other calls (very cheap int'l calls) will be itemised and deducted from your damage deposit. Non smoking.
Have been exploring the area - its simply sensational. House is a dream, reflects brilliantly on u both. Everything is beautiful and perfect. Had a truly fantastic time, thnx so much. A lovely week in your beautiful house.

- Notes on accommodation: Cleaning/Linen/Towels: Our excellent changeover/cleaning team will ensure that all is spic and span. Bedlinen and towels are included. Both houses have solar thermal panels on roof. This automatically supplements the gas boiler with carbon-free energy whenever the sun is shining. Outside: Front of house is on Mortehoe's lovely Victorian terrace leading down the hill to the sea. There is also rear access to house... path leads leads down the hill towards the sea. So you can get to the beaches by the front or the back of the house.
