About Richard Wightman

Helen and I worked in Norfolk in the late 1980s, and always loved the people, the slightly slower and gentler way of life, and the beauty of the area. Career and other pressures took us away from the area, but in 2005 we began to consider purchasing a holiday home. We spent four years treating visits to Norfolk as a bit of a hobby to research the areas and properties. The opportunity to purchase this cottage came our way when it was going to auction in a rather run down state. We spent the first couple of years of ownership renovating the cottage thoroughly, including a new thatched roof and an oak floor. We regularly visit the cottage as a retreat from the pressures of life, and it has worked very well for us. We trust others will enjoy it just as much as we have done.

Why Richard Wightman chose Martham

It is a beautiful location in the Broads area and close to the sea. There are great walks around the village, which is itself interesting, varied, picturesque, but large enough to have "life" and actiivty.

What makes this cottage unique

It is a quaint, traditional cottage with traditional beams, an ignlenook fireplace, and old-fashioned steep stairs. It was once part of a farmhouse dating from 1690, and still has a hand water pump in the garden which we suspect was the reason the farm was located on this site in the first place.

It is close enough to the village to walk to the shops, but on the edge nearest the Broads, where you can enjoy undisturbed walks.

Clean, well maintained and in the centre of everything

  • 5 of 5

A handy base camp for the Broads and Yarmouth. The cottage was homely and comfortable.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind comments. Martham is a good base, being a genuine, old village in the Broads, but also being one of the larger villagers it has more facilities than most.

Quaint Cottage but on a noisy roadside

  • 4 of 5

This cottage is beautiful and very quaint. We enjoyed our stay with our dogs and the garden was secure for them.

Lovely clean place however, the cleaners are missing the cobwebs in corners and there were 6 spiders in the bathroom. Those small bodied long legged ones. Also found one in the cupboard where the plates were and under the shelf by the TVs and in the log store by the side of the inglenook fireplace. I called him blaze 😬? And as for the plate cupboard we Just made sure we cleaned the plates before use.

No spiders upstairs at all - phew.

You do expect that in old properties and just a little more attention to corners and ceilings would of been appreciated by the cleaners.

That said, the cottage itself was fab, cosy and we had a lovely stay.

My only reason for not giving 5 stars was the double bed was the most uncomfortable bed I've ever slept on. Gin helped the sleep.

All in all this would be more than happy to go again if they changed the mattress and the pillows.

A wonderful cottage to stay in. Lots of wood for the fire, beds ready for us with fresh towels. A manual about the house and surrounding area which was helpful. Cozy and peaceful to stay in. We’ll definitely go back :)
