Approximately 200 years old, with a large kitchen/dining room and a large, beamed living room complete with bulls-eye window in an alcove
(where the farmer's wife did her washing), two beamed double bedrooms and shower room/wc on first floor. Small front garden and private walled rear garden, with trailing plants climbing the high walls and ideal for sunbathing, equipped with table, chairs and small barbecue. Situated in a farming village in southern Vendee, near Lucon, with views over the village and beyond to the marais. 25 minutes drive to the sandy beaches, the nearest is La Faute where there is a delightful man-made enclosed sea water lake and beach which is ideal for young children complete with a children's playground. The more fashionable resorts of La Tranche and Les Sables de L'Olonne are further afield. . The village is surrounded by fields and cows pass by the cottage for milking twice a day. Down the road is the beautiful river, le Lay, handy for fishing, walking, bird watching, photography and painting or just sitting and watching the world go by.
We are semi-retired and in our late 60's. We have been staying in our cottage since the early 80's when it was owned by some artist friends. By 2005 we had come to enjoy the cottage and the village atmosphere so much that when our friends became too ill to make the journey and offered us the opportunity to buy the cottage we jumped at the chance.
Yvonne Northcott purchased this cottage in 2005
We chose the location because it is conveniently close to Channel ports. It is set in a beautiful village, deep in rural France and surrounded by peaceful farm land while at the same time offering easy access, through picturesque countryside, to the vast sandy beaches of the southern Vendee, including La Faute sur Mer and La Tranche sur Mer. We both enjoy painting, and the nearby, tranquil river, Le Lay, fields of sunflowers, cattle grazing and old farm buildings and equipment are ideal subjects. We have renovated the cottage extensively retaining its character including oak beams and a bulls eye window in what is now the sitting room.
The sunny climate makes for a truly relaxing holiday, the area enjoying annual sunshine figures second only to those of the Mediterranean. The neighbours are so kind and friendly but never intrude, however, once you engage them in conversation one can learn a lot about the village and surrounding area. We have a private walled garden which is ideal for dining, reading or just relaxing.
