About the property

Takaungu House is set on private land with stunning sea views from the propertie, far away from noisy hotels and beach boys. The beach is virtually private with the only traffic being a few fishermen at dawn. Fresh fish is bought up to the house daily at your request and prepared by excellent staff. Water sports activities can be found at Kilifi, the nearest town a 20 minute drive away. Takaungu Houses are for those looking for a real holiday, far away from the madding crowds, where your soul can really hang out, where the freshly prepared food will nourish your soul and where your children will happily play for hours in the rock pools and waves. Takaungu is a self catering property, has electricity, freezers and fridges and the wonderful staff will prepare mouthwatering meals. You have not lived until you have tried Taku's lemon cake or Bakari's fish and chips. You will be taken back to the time when the coast was untouched and free of commerce. A smidge of heaven.

Outside: Takaungu Houses are set on 10 acres of land, and afford each other total privacy. You will never know if the other house has tenants in it or not (if you are not renting both properties). Its a wonderful location for big family or friend events, including weddings (of which we have now had four!) and is just as suitable for relaxed holidays. Both houses have their own little swimming pools (roughly 20 ft long x 10 ft wide) and are always warm. Not heated by electricity, simply by the sun. Takaungu Private House has a little breakfast courtyard at the corner of the house, where long leisurely breakfasts (or lunches, or dinners!) have been imbibed in, looking out over the pools to the sea beyond. Takaungu House equally offers a myriad of eating areas in the shaded gardens and whether you choose to eat by the pool or down on the beach, or even the Secret Garden (by the sea), it can all be arranged. The Secret Garden has hosted four weddings and many moonlit suppers. Heaven.

One minute walk to the beach. You couldnt get closer!

The small beach of pristine white sand is coved in and protected by two headlands at each end. Walk round these headlands at low tide to explore the creek to the left and miles and miles of rock pools and more little beaches to the left. Great goggling most of the year.

The beach itself is wonderful - there are no other houses that share the beach and although small, offers privacy. No beach boys here!

Fly 540 flies into Vipingo Ridge Golf Course, three times a week and building frequency as the traffic picks up and it will only take you a 20 mins drive to reach Takaungu properties. Great for golfers too - fly in, play a round and come home to Taku!

Alternatively, Kenya Airways, Fly 540 and Air Kenya airlines fly into Malindi (1.15 hrs drive) or Mombasa (1.15 hrs drive).

Takaungu Village (where you can buy all basic provisions, except for alcohol and coffee!) is five minute drive away.

Kilifi, the nearest town has all normal supplies and is a 20 minute drive away. Visit the local boatyard and have lunch overlooking the creek and yachts. Really good food. Mnarani Club close by offers the entire range of water sport facilities, including sailing and diving. Watamu, an hour up the road offers much the same including big game fishing.

Further Details:

Banks - Barclays and KCB cashpoints in Kilifi. Tuskys Supermarket, just opened in Kilifi will cover most of your shopping requirements.

Takaungu houses are self catering so buy your provisions at Tuskys before you come down. After the initial shop, you can really live off the village and Bakari, the headman at Taku, will pop down to the village to get basic provisions. The village is strictly muslim, so does not sell alcohol or luxury items, or meat. Fishermen will bring fresh fish up to the house in season, but have a back up of chicken or steak just in case. Bakari is on hand to guide your shopping requirements, but suffice to say you wont have to trek into Kilifi very often.

Located in the heart of the tiny Takaungu Village, do visit the leather shop! Run by Amanda, a fantastic array of leather goods (including beaded belts, shoes and handbags) is on hand for a touch of retail therapy.

Most water sports can be found in Kilifi, including deep sea fishing (enquire at Kilifi Boatyard, Bakari will give you directions!). Swing by the farm shop on the way to pick up fresh farm produce. Mnarani Club offers diving, watersking, laser sailing and windsurfing, amongst others.

Watamu is located an hour up the road and places of interest along the way include the amazing Sokoki Forest, home to the rare Sokoki cat and elephants, the Gedi ruins, and lots of good beach shopping for kangas (sirongs) and curios as well as a few very good seafood restaurants.

Malindi, another 20 mins north is great for shopping too in the town and is host to a myriad of hotels and restaurants.

Che Chale (another forty mins on from malindi, north east) is one of the best kite surfing spots in the world.

Mombasa, heading south out of Takaungu, an hour away offers a great variety of shopping, hotels, watersports and restaurants. It is also host to a great nature trail (ex Bamburi Cement, turned green and lucious) and water slides at Pirates and Mamba Village Crocodile farm.
