About the Owner

Anna and Dave Youngs are the owners of Chimney Cottage and extend a very warm welcome to you. We have three young children and have always loved the beauty, peacefulness and accessibility of the Peak District, as well as plenty of opportunity for adventure and fun. It is an ideal place for exploring the countryside and finding a quaint, English pub nearby to rest in afterwards! There is so much to do, or so little to do depending on how you feel. Relaxing in the peaceful cottage, in the quiet and friendly village of Winster, feels like home. We hope you think so too!

What a great cottage for a family! The toys, dvds and books were great and the fact that there is a separate playroom, which meant that we could relax in the cosy lounge. Lovely views and weather. Much to explore: bike rides on the Tissington trail, Dovedale stepping stones, Matlock Bath, the little village park and a lovely dinner in the pub of course! The local shop had everything we needed. Thank you!

Cosy family-friendly cottage

  • 5 of 5

The perfect base for our family for sightseeing and hiking in the Peak District for 12 days. Luckily we turned out to be in Winster for Wakes Week. Enjoyed walks locally from the Winster Walks book mentioned in another review (great book, worth every penny) as well as further afield in Dovedale (Ilam), Eyam, Pilsbury Castle and trips to Chatsworth, Hardwicke Hall, Kedlestone Hall, Matlock Bath for the mines and mill museums (both excellent and good for kids). The Saturday of Wakes Week is lots of fun in the village, even if it rains a teeny bit! Don't miss the Burne-Jones window in the church. Particularly enjoyed the Miners Standard for great pub food and friendly locals. The Red Lion in Birchover also has great food and Maazi, the Indian restaurant in Matlock is pretty good too. The village shop is very useful with most essential household supplies, fruit, veg, dairy. Our kids loved walking down by themselves to purchase snacks for themselves. FYI, we had a hard time finding food service after 6pm on Sunday (how we found Maazi!). Anna was very responsive when a couple of small things came up. Would highly recommend this cottage!

Spacious character cottage in pretty village

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely week in Chimney Cottage during Whitsun 2016. The cottage is spacious with a large kitchen/diner and great double bedroom. The second bedroom is a bit more of a squash as the second single bed pulls out from under the first, and there wasn't much room between them. It was great having 2 toilets. The shower works well, but make sure no one else runs a tap downstairs or the water stops! The weather turned cool during our stay, and we found that after a day out, the indoor temperature had dropped to around 13 or 14 degrees, so we did have the heating on when we were in. The cottage would benefit from some additional insulation around the doors and windows. We parked our car on the grassy slope just down from the car park at the top of East Bank. The Cottage was in a brilliant location for access to Matlock, Bakewell and Chatsworth. Although my 12 year old enjoyed Chatsworth House, my 8 year old was disappointed as she is used to child-friendly, inter-active museums. Her favourite visit was to 'The Old House Museum' in Bakewell, run by very friendly staff, with two different children's quizzes and plenty of period dressing up clothes. A family ticket was £12. We also invested in a copy of 'Walks around Winster' - £3.50 from the very well supplied village shop and enjoyed walking across the fields to Birchover. All in all we had a lovely holiday and would recommend the cottage to a family who want a picturesque base from which to explore the Peak District.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review and your booking. We are delighted that you had such a pleasant stay at the cottage. Chimney cottage is over 200 years old and we fell in love with it when we first saw it. We love to hear from our guests as it means that we can make everyone's stay the best it can be. We hope that you benefited from the extra reading lights newly installed in the second bedroom to add to the sense of cosiness and relaxation. We are glad that you have had such a lovely time!

Lovely,comfy and cosy

  • 4 of 5

The cottage is situated in the middle of a lovely village with a great community run shop and 2 very different kinds of pubs - both worth a visit. The cottage is comfortable - ideal for 3/4 people. We were 4, the forth bed is pulled out from under the third. I would have liked more light for reading in the bedrooms and lounge. It was superbly warm which was particularly important as the weather was quite wet and cold. Very accessible from train at Matlock and great walks straight from the house. A few more mugs would be great too. The owner was great at being in touch beforehand and very useful on our return (we stupidly forgot our walking boots) . It was a great few days away - we could have stayed a week.
