Heavenly gite and grounds in tranquil, rural France.

The kids have loved the pool and garden – which are of such high quality.

We have seen lots of wildlife: deer, buzzards, herons and when kayaking a kingfisher and otter. The best place for kayaking was at Taize Aize as the river was so calm.

We also enjoyed the sandy beach at La Guerlie, Lac de Lavard.

Julie & Steve have been brilliant host. They have a wonderful place here and they have been incredibly helpful and accommodating.

Thank you for a truly magical holiday!

Matt, Gill, Family & Friends July 2013

Many thanks again for our wonderful holiday. The kids have been very sad to leave Les Saules and we’ll keep you in mind for future holidays.

Trevor Claire & Family, July 2013

A great fortnights holiday, Excellent weather.

Fantastic accommodation & pool.

We really enjoyed a visit to Vallee d’ singes and the fish & chip shop in Lizant.

Thank you Steve & Julie for everything.

Lovely relaxing holiday

  • 5 of 5

Walnut Cottage is a very pleasant place to spend a week or two. It is very spacious for a couple, nicely furnished, very well equipped and spotlessly clean on arrival.

We arrived late so the welcome pack was indeed very welcome. The eggs from the owner's own hens made a very tasty omelette. The owners, Andy and Vic, are a lovely couple who went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable.

The extensive gardens and pool area were a pleasant place to just chill out or read a book. We had brought bikes and an inflatable canoe and the area is very good for cycling with quiet roads, and unpaved 'field roads' leading to several towns and villages with inexpensive good quality restaurants. Canoeing on the river Charente was an unexpected bonus, lazily paddling downstream watching kingfishers, herons and coypu.

In summary, we had absolutely no complaints and can thoroughly recommend this gite.

Peace and tranquility in a lovely rural setting

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was very well appointed, with everything we needed. The welcome pack was the best we have ever seen; no need to go shopping before arrival - go the next day! Make sure you go and say hello to the "girls" (the hens) to thank them for the yummy eggs.

The furniture & decoration were of a good standard and in good order - a comfortable bed and sofas. A nice large fridge to get all that cheese & wine in.

The pool was good and cleaned every day (although we only got minimal use due to the poor weather). In saying that, sitting inside on the comfy seats was no hassle, the peace and quiet made relaxing easy.

The garden was lovely with a lot of trees and flowers to look at whilst relaxing.

We particularly enjoyed watching Roger the red squirrel pinching the walnuts, bounding around the garden and burying them. He seemed to love the rain.

Andy & Vicky were great hosts, didn't pester us but were always around when you needed help.

We can't really recommend many local eateries as we were content to stay at the cottage and take it easy. The countryside around is just nice to take a leisurely drive around and you can walk over the Roman bridge to have a look at the river or through the woods looking for the wildlife. Lots of birds (the loudest sound at night was the hooting of the owls). A visit to Charroux & Civray are a must. Large supermarkets at Rouffec.

If you want a quiet & peaceful holiday, we cannot recommend Walnut Cottage strongly enough.

We WILL be back! Thanks Andy & Vic for a memorable stay.

home away from home

Les Saules is extremely well presented. The whole package of gites, garden, pool and hosts are impeccable. From the welcome pack (very welcome! Especially the wine!), the extremely well stocked gite, the loan of the airbed for the pool and the English tv channels this was heaven. Nothing was too much trouble for Vic and Andy. The gites are surrounded by fields and trees and very private. Close to the beautiful town of Charroux and plenty of other Beaux Villages! There's enough to do if you so wish or just read a book and relax by the fab pool. We will definitely be back!

A Tranquil Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We have recently returned from a 1 week stay at Les Saules Gites (Walnut Cottage). And it goes without saying that we did not want to leave!

The gites itself was immaculate, well equipped and thoughtfully decorated. The gardens are beautiful and the pool was beautifully clean and so lovely to have at our full disposal for the entire week.

Hosts, Vicky and Andy are super friendly, extremely helpful, but completely unobtrusive. The welcome pack provided upon arrival was very generous and we loved the personal touch of eggs from the resident hens.

The Gites location is ideal for a family break or a quiet retreat. Sat in idyllic countryside, it's perfect for quiet strolls, but also for little ones to run free. For those with young children, the pool is completely enclosed and the gate is locked when not in use so there is no chance of entry without adult supervision.

We would highly recommend a visit to the Monkey Valley (www.la-vallee-des-singes.fr) - it's fabulous fun for young and old, we loved the range of monkeys and how close you could get. Oradour-sur-Glane is also well worth a visit, although a somber one. Bonnezac is also close to a number of picturesque villages, whilst Cognac and the coast are not too far away.

We would absolutely recommend Les Saule Gites to friends and family and we certainly intend on returning in the near future.

Walnut Gite

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely 1 week stay in the one bedroom gite. The gite was clean and well equipped. The grounds were beautiful with the extra bonus of the pool, all set in peaceful spectacular surroundings. The owners we extremely helpful and did their best to ensure our stay was as good as it could be. I will certainly recommend the property to friends and family and hope to return in the future.

"During one week in September I managed to cycle most days and never had to follow the same route twice. There is a wonderful network of minor, almost traffic free, roads meandering between fields of sunflowers and maize.

The towns of Civray, Charroux, Ruffec, Confolens and Availles-Limouzine are all within easy riding distance of Les SAULES.

A particularly pleasant way to begin the day is to ride the short distance into Chatain to the boulangerie over the Roman Bridge and the Charente.

For those who prefer off road cycling there are several trails which are described in leaflets available from local tourist offices".
