About the property

Cottage nr Lurcy-Levis, Allier, Auvergne, France - Located In Rural Central France

Bought originally as a holiday home the house had not been lived in for more than 20 years and has now been lovingly restored with plenty of character remaining despite being heavily insulated against both heat and cold. We bought the cottage from the previous owners last year and intend to retire here when the time comes. It feels large as both bedrooms, the living area, and kitchen diner are all 15 foot square. It is very warm in winter with heating provided by a wood burning stove and air-conditioning to additionally heat or call in the children's bedroom and living area. The bathroom has underfloor heating. Private overground 16 foot diameter by 48 inch deep pool.

Do check out our dedicated web-site (see link underneath Facilities) for more detailed information.

And look out for our other property on Owners Direct.

About Steve and Mary

We bought a small but well equipped gite (La Gravette) a few years ago. Having been letting and visiting the area for a while we decided to find a larger more permanent home for ourselves. For a few years we will be letting our farmhouse (Le Rif) on a gite basis for those who need more space or accommodation. If you have any questions do fill in the form and we will get back to you. Why Steve and Mary chose Lurcy-Lévis

To purchase a house with a barn and 2 acres is beyond most people's budget in England. Another important feature was to have no neighbours, we live in a similar location in Mid Wales. In the countryside where we live there is literally no crime, the youths are incredibly polite, and all the neighbours visit bearing wine. One of my neighbours has not locked his house for 15 years, and we leave our car open with money, phones and DVD screen inside. There is no light pollution, an incredible amount of wildlife, and the weather can be +40 or -20 with great blue skies - rarely is it a drizzly grey day. With great food, cheap wine and a 200 euro council tax - what more do you want.

La Gravette

  • 4 of 5

La Gravette is a very rustic cottage in a lovely rural location. It had everything that we needed, including the charm. When we had a problem at the property it was fixed immediately by the friendly 'handyman'. We had a lovely relaxing holiday and would happily use La Gravette again.

Fantastic stay in a picturesque location of France. We have two young children who were happily entertained by the large spacious garden. Local lake nearby for swimming and a beautiful castle which had interactive activities for children. The gite was a good price; well within our family budget. Would definitely recommend. Correspondence from the owners was excellent from booking to our return to England.

Owner's Response: Thanks Misha for your review. We love the house ourselves and spend as much time as we can there for the same reasons our guests come and stay. We do pride ourselves in our response to guests queries and requests - if we are missing anything just let us know and we will try to provide.

This will be our third year back to La Gravette, Always a warm welcome, and i don't just mean the fantastic weather!!

Fantastic retreat for a relaxing holiday. Rural and quite but always people around to give a helping hand if needed.

Central to some fantastic villages and cities, one of the most beautiful villages is Apremont-sur-Allier, just google it you will see what I mean

We as a family both 43 and kids of 7 (boy) and 11 (girl) will just keep going back year after year.

Owner's Response: Thanks Jason for your review. This is our second year of owning La Gravette and we are very pleased to know that returning guests are happy and come back yet again. The previous owners set a high standard for us to follow and we are grateful for that and hope to continue to provide a unique holiday experience in a lovely part of France.

Lakes such as Goule (8 miles) and Pirrot have sandy beaches that have been specifically constructed. At Goule there are tubes, food and watersports. Only 3 miles away at Couleuvre there is a free pool with lifeguard, petting zoo, and lake that can be fished for 5 euros.

It is 354 miles to Calais which takes us 5 hours when obeying the 80mph speed limits on the smooth and quiet French roads. The best alternative is the train that takes less than 2 hours from Paris to its first stop Nevers, at which point car hire is available and you are only 30 miles away. You will need a car.

Travelling by air is possible and is our quickest way of getting to La Gravette (via Tours) but the flights are mainly mid-week - ask us for details we may be flexible with dates.

Just over 3 miles away is Lurcy-Levis, a good sized village with modern supermarket selling petrol, several bakeries, two restaurants, two take-aways and a racing circuit that you can privately hire.

Under 3 hours from Nevers to Paris by train for a break from the peace of the country ?

Further Details:

2 miles from Troncais - the largest oak forest in Europe with plentiful walks and restaurants

15 miles to Aprement, one of the most beautiful villages in France, chateaux and restaurant

19 miles to Magny-Cours (French Grand Prix) offers many car and bike related events.

20 miles to the fortress at Bourbon with thermal baths.

20 miles to Souvigny monastery, the pilgrimage centre of Europe 1000 years ago.

35 miles to Moulins, cathedrals and see the birth place of Joan of Arc.

40 miles to Sancerre and Pouilly for great wine although closer vineyards are available.

50 miles to Le Pal animal and theme park, cheaper and better than Disney in my opinion.

70 miles to Clermont-Ferrand the massive central and the new vulcania theme park

Fishing, gorges, canoeing, other water sports, and more …

Starter pack contains: Two cold beers, Bottle water, French stick, Quantity of butter and homemade jam, Salt, pepper, sugar, some tea bags, coffee and some milk.
