About the Owner

I'm Jan Dawson and was born and brought up on the Yorkshire Wolds. After spending all our married life living in a local town, my husband Adrian and I were itching to get back into the countryside and moved to Village Farm in Thornton with our 3 children In 2001. We have all found Village Farm a very happy place to be and realise how lucky we are to live in such beautiful surroundings. In 2010 -2011 we decided to convert the old stables, pigsty and haybarn into The Hayloft and had great fun finishing to the standards that we would like for ourselves, so far our guests love it! We take pride in maintaining and cleaning The Hayloft to a high standard and provide a welcome basket which includes locally produced Apple juice and free range eggs from our own chickens.

Every touch has been well thought out, thinking of guest's comfort at all times. A superb conversion, and having stayed in many cottages, this is by far the best.We would certainly look at returning for a further stay 4/8/12

Fantastic accommodation - very luxurious and beautifully clean. Brilliant location, loved the rural setting but closeness to York. Only able to stay a few days, wish it could have been more 24/9

Amazing barn, this is the best accommodation we have stayed in. The finish is of such a high standard, everything is so comfortable and smart we don't want to go!The perfect location for exploring North Yorkshire. In particular the local pubs are very welcoming and the food wonderful. Will recommend to friends and family, we absolutely love it and will be back 2/11

Sooo lovely to step into this cottage after a long journey. We all much appreciated the little extras and having the chance to chill out and catch up in this beautiful, peaceful place has been wonderful 11

A perfect retreat!

  • 5 of 5

As near to perfect as you can get....after many stays now to the Hayloft we always come away thinking this! A luxurious, comfortable, cosy cottage, well equipped and always immaculate. The Hayloft offers a wonderful retreat from "busy life". It offers the peacefulness of a quiet village but also the delights of nearby bustling York. The owners look after you so well, with a welcome basket waiting with all essentials. They make you feel very welcome & are very informative of places to eat or visit. I would & have recommended this property to family & friends. We will definitely be back!!

Hi there. We had a fantastic stay at the Hayloft. It's truly the perfect holiday cottage, everything has been done to a fantastic standard, as a tradesmen I can appreciate the effort and money that's been put in to it. It's so cosy and a great base for a break away, York is also fantastic and can highly recommend it. It was immaculately clean throughout and everything you could possibly need was included. Thanks to the owners for there attention to detail and friendly welcome.

After a lovely warm welome including an unexpected welcome pack which was gratefully recieved packed with goodies we had an amazing week at The Hayloft. It was so peaceful and relaxing with everything provided that you needed plus more. The Hayloft is beautifully decorated and furnished to the highest standard.

Lovely walks along the canal just on the doorstep and an ideal location for visiting York and the surrounding areas including Scarborough & Whitby.

We were very sad to leave and would definately like to come back in the future.

Quiet home away from home

  • 5 of 5

Would recommend Hayloft to any of our friends travelling from Aus. A relaxing home away from the hustle and bustle of York which was easy to access, particularly via the Park n Ride. Everything you would need was provided for in this extremely well equipped property. Owners were available if needed. Welcome basket was an added bonus.

From the Owner

Thornton is a sleepy little village where you really feel as if you're getting away from it all. However we are not far from an abundance of things to do and within 10 minutes drive you can be in the pretty market town of Pocklington, 15 minutes will take you to the historic City of York or you can be at the top of the Yorkshire Wolds also in around 15 minutes. Although we have only been open for eighteen months, we already have guests re booking for a longer stay next time because the area has so much to offer whatever your age.

From the Owner

Village Farm originates from 1750 and although now it is a smallholding (we have chickens just over the fence from The Hayloft, a dog and cat) for much of its life it has been a dairy farm and a milk maid's yoke hangs in The Hayloft as a reminder. It has also been a village pub called The Greyhound. The farmhouse is now used as the village polling station. The Hayloft has the beauty of having loads of character but all the advantages of up to the minute equipment and home from comforts.
