Situated well away from main roads, Finca Cuevas del Marques was a working farm until recently and its land is still cultivated. There is a large salon and a smaller one, both with TV. At 800m and with high ceilings, the house usually stays cool even in summer. Enter a different world through the avenue of almond trees (blossom-time March) and the impressive gateway. Choose from several shaded or sunny outside spaces. Separate utility room in former pigsty. Featured on cover of 'Casa y Campo' after restoration.

Why Adam Bakker chose Ronda

We bought it mainly for the spectacular views and peaceful setting and we still enjoy them with our friends several times a year. Future plans include extending the garden and planting a vineyard to make dessert wines - maybe even 'eiswein', since there is usually frost in the late autumn evenings. This part of Spain has always attracted us and we like our privacy. No crowded beaches for us, however beautiful they might once have been. We like Spanish culture and have travelled in Latin America. And of course, we like the sun, the light, the food and the architecture that are synonymous with Andalucia.

What makes this villa unique

Not many properties are as quiet as this and although light pollution is difficult to escape even in the country, the night sky here is brilliant. There are good walks and rides. For those with more adventurous tastes, there is spectacular paragliding from the nearby Algodonales escarpment. The Grazalema National Park is only a short drive and the cities of Cadiz, Cordoba, Seville and Granada are within easy reach. Wildlife includes griffin vultures, buzzards, many colourful and tuneful birds and even the odd mongoose. Terrapins can be found in the river. The human inhabitants are less exotic but very friendly.

We stayed at Finca Cuevas Del Marques last August and it was absolutely wonderful! The Finca has been beautifully restored. It is situated in an excellent location near the historic town of Ronda, surrounded by a very attractive landscape. You approach along an avenue of almond trees and enter through old gates which open onto a beautiful cobbled courtyard. The house is very tastefully furnished with good paintings and antiques. There is a lovely long table for outside meals. The grounds are also very attractive to potter about in and the terrace and pool a lovely place just to "be". We all loved it as did my sister and her family who joined us for a few days. We went on some good outings but it was always good just to relax at the house. One day our car got a flat tyre and the chap who checked the pool took it away repaired it and left the tyre at the house for us..an unwanted stress resolved! We certainly want to return and highly recommend it.

Notes on accommodation: Please, no smoking inside the house. The furniture has been carefully chosen. Most of it is robust but some pieces need extra care and respect. Outside: Private pool, c 8m x 4.5m x c 2m deep max. 8 - 9 sun-loungers. Long outdoor dining-table in shade, near kitchen, seating 12. Separate shaded area with table for 4. Small salon has its own verandah. Wicker outdoor armchairs for 6. Two barbecues (small, large). Utility Room: Separate utility room with washbasin, washer and separate tumble-dryer. Also, external clothesline in full sun. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and bed-linen changed weekly. Pool towels provided. Weekly cleaning; more often by arrangement.

Fabulous property full of character and charm

We really enjoyed our week at this wonderful Finca. The farmhouse and it's grounds have been lovingly restored and have a rustic and traditional Spanish charm (which incidentally the photos don't do justice to) whilst managing to maintain a high standard of comfort. The kitchen and house are well equipped, and the ensuite bathrooms were spotless and had good power showers/wet rooms . We did not use the guest wing but found the main house to be sufficiently cooled by the mountain breezes and strong portable fans within the property, despite unusually high temperatures in July. The courtyard and grounds of the house are beautifully designed with several different seating areas where you can enjoy the beautiful views and peace and quiet of the countryside. The pool is a good size, big enough to do lengths in and there are plenty of shady areas around the property to cool off when required. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, wish it could have been longer and have no hesitation in recommending it to others.

Wonderful house near Ronda

We stayed here in August 2012. My husband still says it was his favourite holiday rental!

It is situated near Ronda in beautiful countryside. This lovely old house has a wonderful cobbled courtyard, very attractive rooms and a great swimming pool from where you can see Roman ruins in the distance. The whole experience here was excellent and I am sure we will return!

c 75km to Costa del Sol (if you must) at San Pedro de Alcantara. c 2 hours to much better, unspoiled Costa de la Luz north of Cadiz. Some reservoirs allow boating, swimming. Plenty of walking nearby and in the spectacular nearby Grazalema Natural Park.

Travel:

Malaga airport c 110 km/75-90 minutes. Jerez (Ryanair, Iberia) about the same. Seville c 1hr. 45m. Gibraltar 2hrs 30min (+/- border delays). Sometimes direct trains from Madrid to Ronda. AVE (high-speed train) from Madrid to Antequera (c 1hr away) and Malaga. Many inter-city buses from Ronda.

Distances:

Ronda c 17km. Setenil c 14km.

Further Details:

Ronda has everything - banks, post office, several supermarkets, all sorts of shops, museums, wide range of restaurants. Plus famous bridge and Spain's first bullring. Several equestrian/pony-trekking centres in the area.
