About Andy Herbert

We have loved the South West and Cornwall in particular since our very first visit in the 1980s. We used to come here every summer for family camping holidays when the kids were small. It seems inevitable that we would end up living here.

Andy Herbert purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Andy Herbert chose North Cornwall

Forge Cottage is a typical Cornish cottage in a quiet hamlet, great for getting away from the hustle and bustle. It's only a 5 minute drive into Wadebridge, convenient for shopping and all other facilities. We bought the cottage in 2010 and the whole family has just finished refurbishing it to a high standard. We've installed lots of modern features like solar (PV) panels and an air-source heat pump. This year we have created a new garden and built a garage.

What makes this cottage unique

The hamlet is surrounded by quiet countryside. We love walking in Bishop's Wood, an extensive Forestry Commission estate near the cottage. The beautiful Camel Trail is close by at the bottom of the valley and through the woods. The picturesque Camel estuary is a few miles away toward Rock and Padstow and the amazing and rugged North Cornwall coast is about 20 minutes drive.

Home from Home, a lovely cozy cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a really good time at the cottage and wanted for nothing. The décor was warm and inviting and in good taste. I thoroughly enjoyed the deep roll top tub at the end of a long day of walking and sight seeing. We particularly welcomed the bottle of wine on our arrival.

After a long drive from Cambridge we were able to unwind and fall into the comfortable bed. The steps were a little steep going upstairs but that was more to do with us because we both have bad knees and the weather was so bad during our stay that I think it told on our joints! Unfortunately the weather being so bad we were not able to go out into the garden which would have been a bonus. We kept eyeing the bar-b-q and wishing we could have made good use of it.

Wadebridge had everything we needed also and is a lovely place to visit. We were spoiled with the choice of walks, particularly with the dog, and it was a good base to visit some of the surrounding towns, most of which were a half' an hour or less drive away. There was plenty of literature and leaflets available about the local area and the various Cornish attractions.

We liked the quietness of the location and slept soundly.

We had take with us some of our favourite music and a few dvds and were very pleased with the television and dvd/cd player - the quality of sound was really good. The mobile phone and Wi-Fi connection were excellent too.

We also liked the privacy we were given and found no reason at all to contact our host. We would certainly recommend a stay at the cottage. Thanks Andy, we really enjoyed our holiday.

Loved our stay, cottage within easy reach of wadebridge town and not too far to our favourite places and beaches. Extra touches on arrival very thoughtful. Only negative couldn't let our dogs out as no gate on driveway.

Enjoyed our stay, very pleased with the facilities downstairs, although there seemed to be a slight musty smell when we first arrived which cleared when doors were opened. The headroom as you leave the kitchen was not great and as a consequence my brother in-law, who is taller than me, banged his head a couple of times. A warning sign and more importantly some padding on the frame would be useful additions.

The bedrooms were tastefully presented and clean. Nice to have the ensuite off the master bedroom.

We appreciated the partially enclosed and secluded rear garden, perfect for breakfast on sunny mornings, and the bottle of wine on arrival went down well.

A perfect Cornwall getaway

  • 5 of 5

I had high expectations for Forge Cottage based on the description and the reviews, and I can honestly say it exceeded my hopes in every way. Our family made Cornwall the final part of our long-anticipated English holiday--we're from the States, but lived in England when our first two were very small. We enjoyed everything about our trip, but Cornwall and Forge Cottage were the highlight. The character of the building itself is fabulous, and I would love to learn more of its history. It has been thoroughly renovated inside showing great taste and a wonderful sense of design. The back garden is great for breakfast or an evening meal. Anyone braving the narrow roads of Cornwall should consider Forge Cottage as a great base of operations. We got down to the Tin Coast (Poldark Country), cream tea in Morva, St. Michael's Mount, and the Minack theatre one day. Another day we were down at The Lizard and Kynance Cove. Another two days were spent at Tintagel, Port Isaac (Doc Martin's village) and Trebarwith Strand--one of the best beaches we've ever enjoyed. Next time we will need to spend more time in and around Wadebridge itself, but the traditional Cornish pasties from Malcolm Barnecutt's in town were the best we found anywhere--and we tried a lot of them. Andy was extremely helpful, providing us with useful and timely information to make our stay absolutely perfect. He even provided a bottle of wine and some delicious cookies. Since we don't drink alcohol, we appreciated the very kind gesture, and enjoyed the cookies, but left the wine for Andy. Next time we're in England, we hope to stay at Forge Cottage again.
