This family owned and managed holiday cottage enjoys spectacular south facing views across Coverdale which can be enjoyed from both open plan living areas. The stone cottage, set in its own mature garden, has been recently renovated whilst retaining much of its original character. Close to countless attractions yet secluded, this holiday cottage offers all visitors a peaceful haven however you wish to spend your day. The closest pub is a short walk from the cottage. The market town Leyburn 4 miles from village offers great shopping for visitors. As a tributary to the popular Wensleydale, Coverdale is a forgotten gem of the Yorkshire Dales is surrounded by ancient byways and footpaths and brimming with wildlife. Mile House East is the perfect base from which to explore the Dales whether by foot, bike or car. An extensive network of footpaths can be accessed from the village.

Why Rebecca Parr chose Yorkshire Dales

Mile House East is a cottage that has been in our family for nearly 50 years and is currently owned by brothers Peter and Andy McKinlay. We have been able to refurbish and upgrade the property but retain the original features in this lovely old house. Last year we were able to extend the first floor into the old barn and create a large second living space as well as a fifth bedroom and second bathroom. Our families regularly use the cottage ourselves and we now have plenty of space. With three growing children in each family every corner of the dales becomes our adventure playground.

What makes this cottage unique

Wonderful countryside at your front door. Close to both Leyburn - a thriving market town where you can pick up anything you need for your stay. Community owned pub - The Foresters Arms - witin walking distance. Forbidden Corner - voted Best Family Day out 2012 - a few miles away.

Idyllic

The cottage provided the perfect setting for a family holiday - six adults and two children across three generations.

There was ample room for everyone, both indoors and out, the children were delighted with the gardens ( with swings ), the pool table and the ample provision of games and books.

The location was excellent with lots to do and see within short distances. The local countryside is beautiful.

The accommodation provided top quality at a very reasonable price.

Owner's Response: We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay at the house, and all of the space and amenities that it has to offer for family get togethers. Melmerby village is unusual in that it has its own water supply and this is occasionally subject to discolouration, usually due to heavy rainfall which washes more than average quantities from the hills into the water supply and which brings with it a hint of the peat that it comes from. It is perfectly safe to both drink and wash in and reflects the experience of all those who live in the village. I do hope we have the opportunity to welcome you back to the house soon.

The nearest train station is Northallerton (East Coast main line stop) which is approximately 45 minutes away.

The cottage is approximately two and half hours driving from Hull port.

Further Details:

Coverdale is one of the most picturesque of the upper dales. It stretches for over thirteen miles from the bleak beauty of Coverhead in the West, where rivulets cut deep into the peaty moorland, to the small cobbled market town of Middleham to the East - famous for its racing stables and associations with Richard III, once an inhabitant of Middleham Castle. To the west of Melmerby the skyline is dominated by the distinctive outline of Great and Little Whernside in the high dale. Closer to the cottage Penhill on Melmerby Moor is within easy striking distance, as are the crags of Roova facing you from across the dale.

The hamlet of Melmerby is surrounded by rich meadows and pastureland that reach down to the banks of the Cover an easy stroll from the holiday cottage. In neighbouring Wensleydale you can find Semer Water, a peaceful lake surrounded by stunning hills. Hawes in the west of the dale is another picturesque market town with lots to see and do. Aysgarth Falls and Redmire Falls provide well marked and easy walking with good amenities and tourist information. Above Aysgarth Falls sits Castle Bolton, one time prison to Mary, Queen of Scots. Move further North, beyond Wensleydale, and you find dramatic Swaledale with historic Richmond at its head.

Amenities

Good local shops, supermarkets and farmers’ market can be found in nearby Leyburn, and a choice of excellent eateries and traditional pubs in Middleham, and countless other local villages. Carlton with its cosy local pub, the Foresters Arms, serving good food and local ale is within walking distance.
