Overview

Property

Updated: 02-Dec-2016
Jordanthorpe Farm is an historic farmhouse on the edge of Sheffield, close to the Peak District, ideal for quiet and cosy Hen/Stag weekends.

Jordanthorpe Farm dates back to at least 1660 and has enormous quirky character and charm, with heavily beamed ceilings and a stone flagged floor in the Dining Room. It is a Grade II listed building, with a 3 star grading, and is part of the area known locally as 'Chantreyland'. Sir Francis Chantrey, a famous painter and sculptor was born at the farmhouse in 1781. He was commissioned to create sculptures by four reigning monarchs, the last being Queen Victoria. This is a very friendly house which welcomes all guests, including children and pets. It is situated on the edge of Sheffield, a stone's throw from the Derbyshire border, and is very close to the Peak District. There are 5 bedrooms sleeping a maximum of 14 guests. One of the bedrooms is on the ground floor, making it very suitable for children or the elderly. The accommodation also features 3 bathrooms, a ground floor cloakroom, a large dining room with antique polished pine table to seat up to 14, a spacious lounge, farmhouse kitchen/breakfast room, study, and a conservatory. There is a lawned garden with tables and chairs, and ample courtyard parking for 5 or 6 cars. Free BT Infinity WiFi Internet access is provided, and the Sitting Room TV has BT vision and BT Sport. Additionally there are 2 bedroom TVs available.

About the Owner

We are Judie and Patrick. I am originally from Surrey and Patrick from Yorkshire. Much of my childhood and early life was lived in Wales, and Patrick comes from an Irish family, but was born and has lived all his life in Yorkshire. His father was a doctor who came to work in Sheffield as a GP in the 1950s. I have also lived in Devon. Patrick and I have been together since 1982 and have one grown up son. I also have two older children who live in Essex and Germany, and who have provided me with three lovely grandchildren. I am a retired librarian, having worked in both public libraries and in the Arts, Film and Media section of Sheffield Hallam University Learning Centre. These days we are rather nomadic! We both enjoy travel, reading, Scrabble, crosswords, cooking and wine!

'The garden was a perfect informal setting for our summer barbecue party. We put up bunting in the trees and decorated the tables'

'My hen night was everything that I had hoped. All the girls loved the being in farmhouse, and they loved Lemmy too, who was spoilt all weekend'

'Jordanthorpe Farm was just the job for Mum's 70th birthday - all the family fitted into the place, and we had a smashing celebration dinner. It was far nicer than staying in a hotel'

Lovely, quirky and friendly place to stay.

  • 5 of 5

We were a hen party or 11 people looking for a place to relax, enjoy the countryside and also have fun. The property was perfect for everything we wanted. With a wonderful big dining room and plenty of kitchen facilities and cooking equipment, we had a fantastic evening dinner. It's proximity to the Peak district meant we were not far from some great country walks and pubs, and the ample bedrooms and space meant we could all stay very comfortably.

Fantastic hen party for 14 ladies!!

  • 5 of 5

A group of 14 ladies thoroughly enjoyed this house and all it had to offer for a three night hen party stay! Arriving at the house we were pleasantly surprised to find it all set up, heating on, fires stacked, tea and biscuits on the table and all ready to settle in. We all loved exploring the house with its maze of rooms and two stair cases. The bedrooms are cosy, the living room lovely with the open fire and the big grand dining room was perfect. Our favorite room was the kitchen which was incredibly well equipped (especially compared to most holiday cottages) and full of character. We loved the aga and the homely feel.

Our only difficulty was in ordering taxis to take us to Sheffield because none of them could find the house! We ended up having to wait on the main road. We did a food delivery too and the driver almost canceled our order when he couldn't find us! We wondered if it would be worth putting a sign on the main road to direct people as it just looks like the school entrance.

Other than this minor detail we absolutely loved it and would definitely come back with families or friends in tow. It's fantastic value when you compare the price to 14 people staying in a hotel and incomparable in terms of facilities and character. Thanks for everything Judie!

Great place for family get togethers

  • 4 of 5

We recently stayed at jordanthorpe for a family celebration. The house is full of character and has lots of space. The dining room seating 14 was a nice feature, although we didn't get time to use it. The kitchen is very well equipped for dining and cooking. We visited the Peak District everyday and only took about 30 mins so it's an ideal base if you want to go out and about. Thank you Judie and Patrick for letting us stay in your lovely house and for the card and boxed biscuits.

Amazing Find!

  • 4 of 5

We booked the farmhouse for as a base for a family wedding, and it was just perfect. the property is an amazing place, with everything you would require for a family get together.

the kitchen was so well equipped we were able to host a family meal for 24 (other guests from the wedding visited us, including the bride and groom!)

The downstairs bed room is a little public as one of the staircases goes up from it, but for a family this isn't a problem.

the farmhouse has a beautiful secluded garden where we were able to sit out with our drinks.

We will definitely be coming back for another family reunion some time next year.

Thank you Jude for having us to stay, we will be back!

Lovely farmhouse and equally lovely owners!

  • 5 of 5

I recently stayed at Jordanthorpe Farmhouse for my stag do. As there were 12 of us, firstly we have to thank the owners for letting us stay. Many places would simply turn away a group of lads our size, but I like to believe that we're a respectful and well behaved group, and so it was nice not to be judged instantly.

Welcoming us at the Farmhouse upon arrival was a lovely welcome note informing us of everything we needed to be aware of, and a a box of chocolate biscuits, which was a nice touch.

The farmhouse really was full of charm. Despite our number, sadly we didn't get the opportunity to dine at the 14 seater dining table, but can see this being fantastic for big hearty meals (Christmas dinner particularly!). We did enjoy the rest of the farmhouse's charms however from the lovely aga to the winding corridors and wooden beamed ceilings (we did have one or two banged heads, which all added to the experience!).

The farmhouse was perfectly situated with a couple of supermarkets nearby and only a short drive into Sheffield. One or two of our party had a little trouble finding it in the dark, so for any future guests - keep a close eye out for the turning after the roundabout!

I didn't book the farmhouse myself, but was in touch with Patrick after our stay. I had the misfortune of forgetting a ring and leaving it behind. By the time I had realised, it was already safe in Patrick's hands who was incredibly helpful in getting it posted back to me, quickly and safely.

A good sign of good people!

If we find ourselves in that neck of the woods again, we'll certainly be getting in touch with Judie and Patrick.

Many thanks both!

Just Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

We came to Jordanthorpe Farm for a Hen Weekend and stayed two nights. It is in a perfect location, not too far from the city centre with a beautiful garden. The house is wonderful and we loved its character in particular the narrow corridors, low ceilings and wooden beams.

The house is well stocked with all of the things that you would need while you are away. The books and note on arrival from the owner were informative and helpful and we felt that the property was worth every penny.

Many thanks again for making our stay so wonderful.

Location

From the Owner

We totally fell in love with this beautiful, spacious Grade II listed old farmhouse which dates back to around 1660. The house has oodles of character and history, having been the birthplace in 1781 of the famous painter and sculptor, Sir Francis Chantrey. The position is excellent being on the fringe of the city of Sheffield, and yet also close to the countryside of the Derbyshire Peak District. Jordanthorpe Farm is a friendly welcoming farmhouse that lends itself very well as a venue for a group of friends or relations wanting to hold an informal get together in a central location, which is easy to reach for guests arriving from the north and south, east or west of the country.

Activity and Interests

Travel:

Nearest bus stop a 15 minute walk with regular services into Sheffield centre.

Distances:

The centre of Sheffield with the usual city amenities, cinemas, galleries, museums, shopping, etc, is only a 20 minute drive away, as is the large Meadowhall Shopping Mall. The attractive market town of Bakewell is also only a 20 minute drive. The Derbyshire border is literally a stone's throw from the property. Many charming Peak District villages are less than a 30 minute drive away, such as Eyam, Hathersage, Castleton, Ashford-in-the-Water and Youlgreave.

Further Details:

A lovely park is within easy walking distance of the farmhouse. This includes lots of rare breeds, and also features a small animal section which is delightful for young children, with piglets, chickens, rabbits, goats, deer, etc. The Rose Garden Cafe provides refreshments. There is also a Leisure Centre within easy walking distance, with a swimming pool and tennis courts for hire. A group of local shops lie just 2 minutes away by car, with a large supermarket a little further on, which also has a cafe and garage.
