About the Owner

I retired a couple of years ago from Sheffield Union of Students and Mike retired from Rolls Royce a few years before that, although he's now busy in another field of work. We're both keen hill walkers and since retiring have walked in Peru, Nepal and are one of the many who have completed the Coast to Coast.

We decided to purchase an apartment in this part of Spain because of the mountains combined with the coast, the climate and nearby ski resort as the whole family which includes grandchildren love skiing.

Our family are spread out across the UK from Harrogate to Jersey so we have a great life walking and socialising with our friends when we're in Derbyshire and staying in lovely places spoiling our 4 grandchildren the rest of the time. But poor old Ted our cat finds it confusing!

Hi Cilla,

We had a wonderful holiday and the apartment was great. I was very surprised as the scale of the village it is much bigger than we thought and has lovely walks and secret little gems behind closed doors. I would recommend that all visitors take a little time to explore the area by foot.

The apartment has everything you could possible need for a relaxed holiday. It is modern, clean, well maintained - a real home from home. It is spacious with lots of room for 4 adults and two children. The large roof terrace is perfect for dinning out, relaxing in the sun/shade, and star gazing at night. The high walls of the terrace ensure that it is safe for even little children. The down stairs bedroom and bathroom allows couples to share the apartment with space and privacy.

The apartments are set in beautiful gardens, complete with reflective pools, fountains, shady fruit trees and a well maintained pool.

We would recommend the apartment to anyone who wants to get away.

Excellent apartment

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for a couple of nights whilst touring the area. The apartment had everything we needed including a fully equipped kitchen, wifi and a gorgeous roof terrace.

We were met by a lovely lady called Carmen to give us the keys.

We would definitely go back here again.

Thanks Cilla!

From the Owner

Mike and I bought 2 properties in the Granada area of Spain for a number of reasons. We love Granada, with it's fashionable but relaxed atmosphere by day and vibrant tapas bars and restaurants at night. Our passion is hill walking and the Alpharras mountains with local foothills offered many varied walks in very differant terrain to the Peak District which is near our home in the UK. Also, we both ski so the Sierra Navada is a perfect ski resort for us to ski on our own or with our children and grandchildren. Finally, we thought it was a perfect location for our children and their young families to holiday, as it has hills they could climb and explore and the beach just 20 minutes away, offering the best of both worlds, mountains or beaches and sea.

Activity and Interests

Special interest holidays:

The Costa Tropical Granada is on the southern coast of Spain at the eastern end of the Costa del Sol. It takes it's name from the sub-tropical climate that prevails in this area. Inland is the Sierra Nevada and its foothills which are called Las Alpujarras

The region of mountain villages known as Las Alpujarras clings to the southern flanks of the Sierra Nevada, cloven by deep, sheltered valleys and gorges which run down towards the Mediterranean. The Alpujarra, as it is popularly known, in the singular, is famous throughout Spain because of its unique mini-ecology. Its terraced farmlands constantly watered by melting snow from above, constituting a high-altitude oasis of greenery which stands in dramatic contrast to the foothills below. This is an ideal location for hillwalking, mountain biking and rock climbing, terrain for adventurous travellers, the average altitude is 4,000 feet above sea level.

Perfect location for those who enjoy peace and tranquillity or just being outdoors.

There are three main coastal resorts - Almunecar, Salobrena and Nerja approx half an hour drive away. There are also many small coves on the Costa Tropical coast that are quiet or you may chose one of the beaches of Salobrena, Nerja and Almunecar which are busier with many facilities. The chiringitos (small beach restaurants) in Salobrena are excellent to enjoy fresh seafood and other Spanish food at reasonable prices and you always have a chance of seeing dolphins swimming near the beach.

Velez de Benaudalla is situated between the old main road from Granada (N323) to Motril and the new Motorway, A44 (E902), 'Autovia de Sierra Nevada' this follows a similar route.

Many budget airlines operate into Malaga airport which is 65 miles from Velez, all of which is motorway.

A service bus goes through Velez each day (with the exception of Sundays) from Motril to Granada (both ways)

A car is recommended for this property.

Some UK airports operate flights into Granada.

Airports are Granada 44 miles, Malaga 65 miles (motorways).

Granada and the Alhambra 40 miles.

Salabrena 10 miles.

Sierra Nevada ski area 50 miles.

Motril 10 miles.

Further Details:

The city of Granada is well worth a visit, with its magnificent Cathedral (built on the site of a Mosque). It has many beautiful shops and rambling alleys and wonderful tapas bars.

One journey not to be missed is to take the bus up to St. Nicholas Square, gazing in amazement as the driver threads his way through narrow streets and alleys avoiding pedestrians, children and animals. The view across the narrow valley to the Alhambra is breathtaking, especially at night. Then find your way back down on foot through a maze of small alleys to emerge back where you started.

Possibly the most principle attraction in the city of Granada is the ancient Moorish palace of the Alhambra, with it's magnificent architecture and what are considered to be a fine example of Hispanic Muslim gardens in Spain.

The Science Palace is also a very interesting attraction to visit, especially families wanting a more 'hands on' experience.

One of the places of interest in Velez is the recently restored Nazarin Garden which represents the '5 senses of nature' which dates back 500 years.

Velez de Benaudella has a micro climate that makes it warmer in the winter and slightly cooler in the summer, than other towns elsewhere along the coast, and has been a sought after location with inhabitants going back to Phoenician times.

An ideal base for walking in the Alpaharras Mountains or just relaxing.

From the Owner

Depending on what we feel like doing or need to do our Velez apartment is ideal. It has the contrast of the coast and busy resorts with lovely seafood restaurants if we feel like a day out, or we can put on our walking boots and take to the mountains to explore the foot paths and history of the region. However, some days we just feel we want to relax by the pool or read 'a good book' on our roof terrace. Getting to Velez is easy, as we take Ryanair to Malaga, drive on the motorway stopping to have a meal in a restaurant in Nerja and arrive in the village in an hour and a half to two hours depending on the size of the meal !! Velez village has a typical Spanish feel with the 'no hurry' characteristics you want on holiday. Everyone should go down to the cafe and have a coffee sometime!
