House in Chambon, 30 Minutes Drive to a Long Sandy Beach. Ideally Positioned For Easy Access To Charente Maritime
Le Puits is a beautifully restored Charentais house, set in the Charente Maritime region (renowned for being the second most sunny part of France). The house can be found in Chambon, a typical French hamlet with beautiful areas for birdwatching, cycling and walking. The bakery delivers bread daily (not Wednesday) and the town of Surgeres, 5 miles to the east, has supermarkets, bars and restaurants, an indoor swimming pool and pretty river walks. Aigrefeuille d'Aunis, 5 miles to the west, has an outdoor market twice a week selling fresh fruit, vegetables and fish. It also has an outdoor swimming pool and a landscaped lake. Historic La Rochelle is only 25 mins drive away. Here you can sunbathe on the beach at Les Minimes, visit the aquarium or take the bus boat from Les Minimes to the beautiful harbour and enjoy the excellent sea food offered in the restaurants on the harbour front. La Rochelle airport has direct flights from the UK and Ireland with low budget airlines such as Ryan Air.

Rural retreat with fantastic space
About the Owner
I have lived and worked in England, Taiwan, Pakistan and Mexico but I still love France the most! Chambon, the location of my gite, provides a quiet and friendly hamlet in which I can work and relax. I have converted a local barn into a studio in which I make ceramic sculptures, vessels and bowls. I return to the UK frequently to deliver my artwork to galleries and to see my son and daughter. I am very lucky to be surrounded by such beautiful countryside with delicious wine, cheese and French bread only minutes away!
Guestbook comments from the owner
*What a lovely newly renovated house. Kids have adored it especially as they shared the same room. Location very good-easy access to most of Charente Maritime and Vendee.
*We love this cottage, It's so pretty and tastefully decorated. It's been an excellent base for trips to the seaside especially Fouras and Chatelaillon. We really enjoyed visiting La Rochelle, a beautiful old port and having supper in the harbour of St Martin de Re. We loved rowing at the abbey at Maillezais too.

Rural retreat with fantastic space
The property was great. Facilities - had everything we needed. This was a last minute booking so a great find! There was plenty of space for us to move around after being couped up in our previous property - so a lovely relaxing end to our travels. The property was clean and well maintained. The owner was helpful and even gave her mobile for any questions we had. I would recommend this property to friends - it was good value for money for peak season. Weather was great. What more can I say, rest relaxation with plently of space and added bonus of a quaint private garden. Loved the option of fresh bread and croissants being delivered in the morning. Accessible to the historic La Rochelle (a beautiful historic town). A great end to our trip around France. Thanks Hazel.
FIVE STARS FOR CHARM AND HOSPITALITY!
Thoroughly recommend this attractive gîte, imaginatively restored and well-equipped with a pretty garden stocked with buddleia, wisteria, passion flower, lavender and hollyhocks. The owner, Hazel, is charming and helpful and we enjoyed her hospitality whilst viewing her impressive nearby gallery of ceramics and sculptures. Well-placed for trips to the sea and exploring inland, Le Puits is the perfect place for a relaxing French break in the Charentais countryside.
Firstly, the gite is in a superb location. Ideal for exploring this lovely part of France.
The gite had everything needed for 2 adults and 2 kids to have a wonderful and memorable holiday.
Finally and most important for me the owner was brilliant to deal with from booking stage to end. Nothing was to much trouble and a genuine interest in the guests comfort shone through.
We would have no hesitation in recomending this property and hope to return. Missing the sunflowers
A well-equiped house in a rural setting with access to a lovely garden.
There is good prevision for off-road parking with easy access to the house at the front and back. The garden has a good range of outdoor furniture which we were able to use in the fine weather. We particularly enjoyed watching the changing flowers and insects on the lavender. The kitchen is well-equiped and spacious with the option to eat inside or out. The living room is large with comfortable seating and another dining table if needed. There is a choice of two shower rooms and toilets in the upstairs room. The bedrooms are good size and the beds are comfortable. There is good internet access via the wifi.
Lovely Gite in the Charente Maritime area
Our first stay in a Gite and we liked it so much that we would love to come back!
Chambon is a very peaceful village so if you are after some relaxation, this is the place to come!
Hazel's gite though has all mod cons and was very comfortable for us, so we would recommend it if you don't want to stay in a hotel and are unsure about camping.
A lovely host who was there to greet us when we first arrived. We hope the seedlings survive Hazel - thanks again for those!

We wanted a restful stay - that is what we got.
This attractive gite (we have stayed there twice before) is in the peaceful hamlet of Chambon Bourg. It has been tastefully restored and can accommodate up to six people. The garden is delightful (the owner is a keen gardener), providing a private area for eating, sitting in the sun or finding some shade. Chambon has no shops, but a local bakery provides a delivery service six days a week. There are some good restaurants nearby, in Surgeres and Vouhe. There are supermarkets, patisseries, butchers and other services in Surgeres, some six miles distant.
There are plenty of places to visit in the area. Attractive towns such as La Rochelle, Saintes, St-Jean-d'Angely and Rochefort are a short drive away, as are splendid beaches at Chatelaillon and Fouras Coulon, in the Marais Poitevin, provides boat trips through a wooded area criss-crossed with waterways for a totally different type of experience.
The owner, who is English, lives nearby and is a most hospitable person - nothing is too much trouble for her.
Activity and Interests
30 minutes drive to a long sandy beach with sailing school, crazy golf and water park at Chatelaillon Plage. 25 minutes drive to the popular, sandy beach at Les Minimes in La Rochelle with rock pools and pretty park on the headland.
There are reasonably priced direct flights to La Rochelle from London, Stansted and Dublin with Ryan Air; Southampton, Birmingham, Glasgow and Manchester with Flybe; Edinburgh and Leeds with Jet2; London, Gatwick and Bristol with Easyjet and Cork with AerArann. The gite is 1.5 hours motorway drive from Bordeaux airport. Europcar, Hertz or Budget can arrange hire cars from either airport. The ferry port of St Malo is a four-hour drive, and the Eurostar runs from St Pancras to La Rochelle/Surgeres.
The town of Surgeres, 5 miles to the east, has supermarkets, bars and restaurants, an indoor swimming pool and pretty river walks. Aigrefeuille d'Aunis, 5 miles to the west, has an outdoor market twice a week selling fresh fruit, vegetables and fish. It also has an outdoor swimming pool and a landscaped lake. Historic La Rochelle is only 25 minutes drive away.
The village of Chambon Bourg has an historic church and cemetery in which a number of French Resistance workers are buried. The separate village of Chambon-Gare, 2 miles to the south has a post office. Flat country lanes fan out from Chambon, providing quiet and safe walking and cycling routes. The tall hedgerows lining the lanes harbour many species of songbirds. Buzzards, harriers, kites and owls are frequent visitors. Deer and hares are also to be seen. One walk that we enjoy will take you through the avenue of trees in the grounds of the Maison de Repos (a convalescent home) at nearby Marlonges, then through the village of Marlonges and back home. During June and July many of the fields surrounding Chambon are full of sunflowers. A 25 minute drive west will take you to La Rochelle with its historic medieval towers guarding the entrance to the beautiful Old Port. The choice of excellent places to eat and drink is endless. Street entertainments around the harbour every night during the summer make for a pleasant after dinner stroll. At the nearby modern marina complex of Les Minimes can be found many museums and a small beach. The famous Aquarium is now located near the old port. Other beaches can be found to the south of La Rochelle at Chatelaillon Plage and Fouras, both of which are a similar journey time from the house.
