Apartment in Kingswear/Dartmouth, Devon - Easy Access to the town of Dartmouth Via The Higher Ferry and yet peaceful and on the Sunny Side!
With its imposing location on the sunny Kingswear side of the River Dart, our brand new one bedroom flat has panoramic views of the river with its myriad of activity including the occasional passing steam train. The original 1930s house was demolished in 2013 to make way for a contemporary three storey dwelling optimising its position. The large garden is still a work in progress in some areas so please bear with us as we attempt to settle the house back into the landscape! The gardens run on a steep slope making it difficult for the infirm or very young children. It is also a very short, but steep walk down to the ferry to go to Dartmouth.
The drive sweeps down allowing you to park a car just above the house and there is even parking for a small boat at the top of the drive. There are some steps to get down to the flat where the internal space includes an open plan kitchen, living and dining room with a separate bedroom and fully equipped bathroom with a walk in shower. An internal staircase leads up to the main house but the flat is entirely private and self contained.
This has been our family home for over 30 years and we are lucky to live in a truly beautiful area with such amazing views over the river and surrounding countryside. Spend time watching the seals hunting for fish or the various vessels passing up and down the river. Relax with a glass of local Sharpham wine whilst watching the sun set over Old Mill Creek.
Park the car here for a week and you’ll have all you need on the doorstep without taking the car out again. Take the ferry to Dartmouth and join a boat trip up river to Totnes or a sea voyage to Salcombe. Enjoy the many festivals that Dartmouth has to offer such as the Music Festival in May, Regatta in August and the Food Festival in October.
We have lovely neighbours who like their peace and quiet so would encourage guests who enjoy the tranquillity of the river.
Please take a moment to have a look at our new website on the Facilities page giving further information and some history. The web site for the property can be found at lowtidesdartmouth.com

About Jane Green
This was my parent’s home for over 30 years and is situated on the Kingswear side of the River Dart overlooking Dartmouth and the Royal Naval College. My husband and I have been coming here for many years with our two children who have grown up with crabbing on the slipway, watching the steam train as it passes and catching the ferry to Dartmouth.
The house was very old and dated so we decided to start again and the result is a brand new build which is divided into 2 dwellings, the main part being our home (Tides) and the flat below (Low Tides).
Jane Green purchased this apartment in 1980
Why Jane Green chose South Hams
My parents bought this property when they were looking for somewhere to retire. They came to have a look, saw the view and fell in love. My husband and I have now inherited the property and their love of the area and although the views remain the same, the house has been replaced with our contemporary new build. However, we still love the same old things such as nipping across on the ferry to Dartmouth but then coming back to the peace and quiet.
What makes this apartment unique
The view is spectacular with panoramic views up and down the river and across to Old Mill Creek. There is never a dull moment from watching the seals, the birds, the shoals of mackerel calling to me to catch them or the numerous boats passing out to sea or up to Dittisham and beyond. The steam train passes below on its way from Kingswear to Paignton. But mostly it is a real place to relax and, due to our south west facing location, we get the very last of the sun before it sets. Consequently one of our most favourite times is sitting on the terrace with a gin and tonic in the evening. More details can be found at lowtidesdartmouth.com

We have just returned from a fabulous stay at Low Tides. We were very lucky with the weather in the most part so were able to take full advantage of the sun terrace in the afternoon and evenings and the fabulous views. However when the weather wasn't so kind there is still plenty to do. We took boat rides to Totnes, Dittisham and around the coast and the steam train to Greenway and Paignton (although weren't so keen on the latter). It is possible not to use the car but it was more convenient for Coleton Fishacre and Brixham. The flat itself is really well appointed and Jane was on hand to answer any queries. We would thoroughly recommend the flat and are intending to return again soon.
Stunning Waterside Views
The views from Low Tides along the River Dart and towards Dartmouth were stunning. The property itself was finished to a high standard and warmly furnished making, it felt very luxurious. It had everything we needed for a self catering holiday away. It was a short walk / ferry journey into Dartmouth and all of the pubs / restaurants available there. As a nice touch there was even ferry pass on the fridge door. Booking was easy and the Jane (the owner) was responsive to emails and acknowledging funding transfers. Overall a really good experience and we would definitely recommend.
Loved it, did not want to leave.
Superb in every way, just what it describes on the website, but better! One week is not enough. Jane, Mark and family were the perfect hosts.
Perfect Place to Stay
A wonderful relaxing apartment with the most wonderful views over the busy River Dart - a real gem of a place. Great location for visiting surrounding towns and places of interest (and there are many !)
Jane and Mark were very welcoming and helpful.
Would most definitely recommend.
This apartment is a real gem
This apartment is a real gem. It is in a prime location, with stunning views of the river and Dartmouth. It is situated on the western side of the river so it benefits from the afternoon and evening sun. The apartment is very modern, and roomy with quality furnishings and equipment. It is very comfortable and a lovely place to relax and unwind. Dartmouth is in easy reach, just a short (and frequent) ferry crossing and good restaurants and shops make it an excellent base and close to Torbay. Jane and Mark were lovely hosts too and very helpful with tips and recommendations and made us very welcome. We can't praise everything about the apartment enough – suffice to say that the day after we got home from our short 3 day break there in May and checked our calendar, we booked up immediately for a longer break in September! We can't wait to re-visit again soon.
An absolutely stunning location overlooking the River Dart. Would be breathtaking with the sun out (we were very unlucky with the weather!). The apartment is also beautiful and very well equipped. Very comfortable with stunning views from both bedroom and living room. Plenty of room to cook too if needed, and a fantastically powerful shower. Would very much recommend.

Activity and Interests
Just 15 minutes drive to Torbay beaches or cross the ferry for a 15 minute drive to the Award winning Blackpool and Slapton Sands. Fishing and boat hire are available from Dartmouth after a 2 minute walk to the ferry to cross the River Dart. At the top of the garden a public footpath runs through the woods to Kingswear village and goes on to join the Coastal Footpath. You can do a circular route to Kingswear and walk back along the steam railway footpath towards the ferry and up to the house.
It is possible to reach us by public transport and there are some interesting ways, particularly if you like a challenge! The easiest way is to catch the train to Paignton from where you can catch a bus to Kingswear. Alternatively catch the bus from Totnes to Dartmouth and cross on the ferry. The adventurous way is to link the time of the train from Totnes to catch one of the River Link ferries to Dartmouth thus avoiding all roads!
The walk to the ferry is only a short 100m down through the garden (which is a little steep) on to Bridge Road leading to the ferry. The ferry operates continuously and takes less than 5 minutes to cross to Dartmouth. It runs from 6.30am to 10.45pm although there are water taxis in case of emergencies! www.dartmouthhigherferry.com
There are plenty of award winning restaurants in Dartmouth with a full choice of menus and prices. There is a good choice of supermarkets on both sides of the River Dart or on-line delivery services are available from major supermarkets. There are a multitude of events that take place in Dartmouth such as the Comedy Festival 3 to 7 March 2015, the fabulous Music Festival from 15 to 17 May 2015 and of course the Royal Regatta in August to name but a few.
