Florenca is a beautifully restored, traditional farmhouse, which has been converted into 5 fully furnished and equipped apartments in the peaceful, rural village of Cumieira (for details on Apartment 5 please refer to property ref: 8171868). You will enjoy all the comforts of home in our fully equipped, tastefully decorated self-catered apartments making Florenca the ideal base for your stay in stunning central Portugal.

We invite you to relax by the pool and take in the fantastic views set in charming, landscaped gardens and enjoy the traditional Portuguese outdoor BBQ area, perfect for dining ‘al fresco’ on those warm summer evenings. Escape the heat of the midday sun under the shade of our living relic, a magnificent ancient olive tree believed to be over 600 years old! Keep in touch with family and friends with complimentary access to fast fibre optic Wifi, available in all areas of the property.

Here in Cumieira you can experience true Portuguese rustic living so don’t be surprised if you bump into one of the local shepherds herding their sheep whilst you’re out walking in the village! Explore the numerous delightful river beaches, which are dotted around the area or alternatively head out to the coast, an easy 50 minute drive to the breathtaking silver coast. For the more active and adventurous there are an abundance of hiking/mountain bike trails and plenty of historical sites to discover in the region. You won’t need to go far to enjoy typical traditional Portuguese food as there are plenty of excellent, reasonably priced restaurants within easy reach.

Although the village is set in a quiet, rural location, major road links to the larger towns and cities like Coimbra, Porto, Lisbon, Aveiro, Tomar and Fatima are easily accessed, helping you to get as much sightseeing out of your trip as you can.

Apartment 4 on the ground floor of the property has an L-shaped open plan lounge/kitchen/dining area and features a fully equipped modern kitchen with washing machine, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, gas cooker and hob. The bedroom offers a double bed and generous wardrobe space. The bathroom enjoys a large walk-in shower and vanity unit. For your entertainment there is a flat screen TV in the lounge with DVD/radio player and a selection of satellite channels. Central heating and a typical log burner are available for use in colder winter months. A fold up ‘Z’ bed can be provided for an additional guest at a supplementary charge of €15 per day.

About the Owner

Having had an affinity with Portugal for several decades, buying a property and living there, was very definitely at the top of our wish list.

The idea of actually building a business there really evolved rather than forming part of some master plan.

As I had worked as a Building contractor for many years specialising in the renovation, extension and refurbishment of houses and gardens, I was able to put these acquired skills and knowledge to good use when I bought the disused and run down former working farmhouse, that is now Apartamentos e jardims de Florenca.

Of course working in a new country without knowledge of the language,working practices, different materials,planning and local council approvals etc was to prove challenging, but nevertheless they were challenges to be overcome.

This is a wonderfully comfortable place to stay. We loved how tastefully decorated everything is and we particularly loved the sunny garden. We used the property as a base for exploring the area, visiting Coimbra, Leiria,Oporto, the ruins at Conimbriga and the coast at Sao Pedro de Moel. The drive through the endless pine forest west of Leiria was amazing surpriseWe also spent the day in Lisbon: a two hour drive, but well worth it. The best restaurant that we found is 'O terrier do Lagar,in Cabeca Redondo (a five minute drive from the apartment)which is very reasonably priced but serves delicious simply prepared meat and fish with excellent wine. Our host Shirley was extremely kind and attentive. Thank you!

When we started to look for a property of our own in this part of Portugal, the one that we bought was the very first one that we downloaded from the internet and although we looked at a few more, it was very much a question of love at first site. We loved the feeling of space, the beautiful views and the simplistic way of live in this small village of 200 or so. Somehow we instantly knew that we had to buy this run down ramble-shack of a Farmhouse, as it offered so much potential and take up the challenge of restoring it into something that could also be shared with others.

Coast/Beach:

Some of the best beaches on the West coast are within a comfortable hours drive from Cumieira. We would be happy to advise and help you with directions etc. This part of Portugal is blessed with Praia Fluvials which loosely translated means River Beaches and these are set in beautiful countryside and often have free barbecue facilities. Cumieira is ideally located to take advantage of the excellent road and rail networks to Porto, Lisbon, Tomar, Obidos, Fatima and many other places of interest.

Travel:

To enjoy your stay in Cumieira to the maximum car hire is essential. This can be arranged at either Lisbon or Porto airports. We are equidistant from either Lisbon or Porto.The journey by car from either Airport is 2 hours. The same journey by a combination of public transport and taxi is closer to 3 hours excluding waiting times for trains.We have very good service from local taxi companies to take you to and from restaurants etc.

Distances:

We are geographically fortunate here in Cumieira because although we exist within an absolute rural village setting, we are also close to main road links and train stations.Lisbon or Porto is 2 hours away, Obidos and Peniche are 90 minutes, Fatima, Tomar, Aviero, Batalha and West coast beaches are within an hour. The historic city of Coimbra (former capital city) 45 minutes and Town of Penela 20 minutes. Water theme parks at both Pombal and Castenhiera de Pera are within 30 minutes.

We have spent over 3 years transforming our property from the run down farmhouse that it was, to its present form, it is something that we are extremely proud of. Prior to buying this property we had holidayed in Portugal on many occasions over the last 20 years. We had learnt to be selective when booking villas and apartments because although Portugal has a lot going for it in terms of sun, food, history and beaches, we knew that on a self catering holiday we were always going to spend a considerable time at our rented home in order to enjoy the swimming pool, outside leisure and eating.Adding to this the need to have clean accommodation, efficient kitchens and bathrooms and the normal creature comforts of home, were the main issues that drove the tick list.

We have used the same tick list here in Cumieira and we feel that we have fulfilled the maximum in our quest to make your stay with us as pleasant and as memorable as possible,to welcome you back year after year and to receive recommendations from you to your friends and families.

2011 was our first season of trading and we're very pleased with the results.

The nearest town to Cumieira for supermarkets, banks and ATM facilities, post office,doctors, hospital, bakers, pharmacy, restaurants, greengrocers, hairdressers, nail parlours, and almost all the of the necessities of 21st century living is in Avelar which is a 10 minute journey by car. Similar facilities exist in both Ansiao and Pombal both of which can be reached in 20-30 minutes respectively.

Relatively inexpensive family orientated restaurants, exist in abundance in surrounding areas. We are happy to help you with these and to arrange transport as required. There is a village bar within a 3 minute walk which is also very popular for lunches on Mondays to Fridays,a 3 course lunch including wine, beer, water and coffee is currently available for a fixed price of €7.

Booking Notes:
Confirmation of booking can be made by either email or letter. A 50% deposit is required on confirmation of booking and payment in full has to be made 28 days in advance of your arrival or at a date to be agreed (dependent on the time frame between booking confirmation and the start of your stay). In connection with the terms and conditions of your visit, information will be made available to you within the booking confirmation paperwork, about breakages and damage as will a content check list on arrival.

Changeover Day:
Our preferred change over day is on a Saturday.Where possible we can be flexible about this in order to suit flights and your preferences. Check out time will be 10am and check in time not before 2pm, again our aim is to be as flexible as possible.

Notes on prices:
All prices stated are in Euros. Prices include the supply of towels which are changed as requested. Bed linen will be changed once a week and a full clean of the apartment will be carried out once weekly.More frequent cleaning of the apartments is available at additional cost.Brooms, mops and buckets and other cleaning implements are available in each apartment. Irons and ironing boards are available as are external drying lines.

Having lived in London for the majority of our lives, we fell in love with the much slower pace of living in a typical rural village, like here in Cumieira. Having said that, although you would never know it, we are only minutes from main road networks that will take you all over Portugal and into Spain. We are also equally well positioned for train journeys from either Pombal or Coimbra and a 90 minute train journey will find you in either the centre of Porto or Lisbon, for those much loved sightseeing tours.

  • Notes on accommodation: Apartamentos e Jardims de Florenca are in a small working village named Cumieira which is a village typical of this part of Portugal. The village comprises of a nursery and infant schools, a Mother Church dated from the 15th century complete with time chimes, a day centre for the elderly, a bar which doubles up as a restaurant at lunch time and finally a cemetery. As far as we know we are the only non-Portuguese in the entire village. The property is detached and is a corner plot.The accommodation exists over two floors and the property is fully walled and gated. All apartments face the gardens at the rear of the property. A double gated entrance exists at the front of the property directly into the courtyard garden, from where all apartments can be accessed. A second entrance is available via a single gate on the East elevation which takes you directly into the upper garden, again all apartments can be accessed from here. There is a flight of stairs connecting both garden areas. Outside: There is a private pool in the upper garden also a brick built traditional style barbecue for client use, additionally there are a couple of gas fired mobile barbecues available. There are 6 metal garden tables each with 4 chairs, chair cushions and parasols. Around the pool area there are about 10 assorted loungers and reclining chairs. In the courtyard garden there is a garden set consisting of a glass topped table and 6 dining chairs, under a covered and curtained gazebo. There is also a bistro table with 2 chairs outside apartment 4.
