About the Owner

We live in Oxford with our two teenage children. Members of our family have owned a holiday home in this beautiful area since 1966, and we spent many happy holidays with them before buying Maison Mailhes in 2006.

We love travelling to new places but also love the beautiful countryside, pretty towns, Atlantic coast, mountains and, of course, the fantastic food and wine in this part of France.

I always had a good feeling about Maison Mailhes. Whenever you sent us any information, it was always well considered, answering all questions whether or not they were posed. And so it has turned out. We've recently returned from our fortnight where the children, in particular, had a wonderful time. We were also most impressed by the range of features and facilities. Many thanks! Stuart and Joan W and family, Leicestershire.

What a lovely place to spend a holiday. The house is gorgeous (especially the kitchen!) & we appreciated the gift pack and extra touches – soap, pool towels, etc. Katie G, Rugby.

Thanks for a wonderful week which made the kids hols really special. They got great fun out of the pool, and the house and kitchen were lovely. Will recommend. K family, Dublin.

Lovely skiing and so warm in February. The thermes in Salies are a must. H family, London W12.

We have had an amazing time and nobody wants to leave. Hilary R, Sheffield.

What more could you ask for?

  • 5 of 5

We (grandparents, children, grandchildren - ranging from 2 to 76) have just spent a fantastic time in this wonderful house. It is so well equipped and everything to make our stay perfect had been thought of. Both the inside and outside eating areas were superb. The pool was, of course, the biggest hit with the younger generation.

The children loved going to the village boulangerie every morning to practise their French. The supermarket in Salies-de Bearn and the local markets had everything we needed. I couldn't believe that there were even fresh herbs in the garden.

The owners have been helpful from the day we booked and were accommodating throughout to any special wishes.

I would highly recommend Maison Mailhes, especially for families.

Perfect family holiday house

  • 5 of 5

Our holiday in this really lovely house was everything we'd hoped for and more. The attention to detail was amazing and everything we needed had been thought of, even to the point of having two coffee machines - one for filter and one for espresso (not forgetting the milk frother if we fancied a Cappuccino!). Everything is really good quality. The beds and the sun loungers round the pool are really comfy, towels are fluffy and the owners seem to have thought of everything so that it feels like a real home from home. We really couldn't fault anything.

It was hard to tear ourselves away from the house but we did have some great days out in this lovely area and ate at some great restaurants. Salies is just 10 minutes away and is incredibly pretty and has an authentic market. The atlantic beaches are close by and we went there a couple of times, but with the lovely pool we found it hard to tear ourselves away.

We really appreciated the owner's help beforehand answering all our questions, and we were grateful for the clear driving directions and the advice to avoid the coast road south from Bordeaux which we were told is always extremely busy on summer Saturdays.

A really super property, lovely location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for a week in early September 2015. It's a really super property - it dates from the 19th century and has a historic feel about it (oak beams, original staircase etc) but it is totally modernised. It's very tasteful, but more to the point, everything is done to a high standard and everything works, including the wifi; and the owners have provided useful things like a pack of information about the village and the local area, maps of the region etc. It is amply big enough for the advertised 10 people and it's genuinely set up to accommodate 10 people - enough plates and cutlery, enough table space and chairs, enough sun-loungers round the pool. Nice garden too; there are even fresh herbs (including a huge bay tree)!

It would be difficult to be more positive about the property.

The region is rural and scenic, with lovely picturesque and historic towns. The nearest town (Salies-de Bearn) has a good supermarket, as well as shops, a genuine local market and a spa! Also excellent restaurants. It's also within striking distance of the Pyrenees - and apparently there is skiing in the winter though obviously that's not something we sampled.

Perfect time in the real south of France

  • 5 of 5

We (2 families with kids) had a wonderful holiday in this house. There is plenty of space and as well as sleeping ten the downstairs accommodates 10 too. We've stayed in places with enough beds but dining chairs for only half that number so you have to eat in shifts! The owners really have thought of everything from supplying pool towels to providing very clear instructions for how all the appliances work, and we have never had such a well equipped kitchen.

Everyone was happy. There are lots of activities around for teenagers and much to their relief the wifi worked. The little ones had a wonderful time in the garden and the pool, and the adults had lots of lazy lunches and dinners. There are several markets nearby to get delicious local produce and it's a pleasure to prepare it in the lovely kitchen. We sampled some of the local restaurants too and enjoyed them all.

A really perfect place to stay and a true flavour of real France.

Superb house and superb holiday

  • 5 of 5

Please accept a big 'thankyou' for the use of your idyllic property and its wonderful facilities. When we arrived everything was very clean and everything is well-maintained. We really appreciated all the space and the village location is convenient for the baker and cafe as well as sightseeing and activity trips.

We thought your house file and area information were fantastic. Having a 'quick reference' for all appliances, etc means you settle in really quickly and the area information enabled us to have some great days out eg kayaking, etc.

The youngsters loved practising their French on the baker at the corner, and we all loved the scrummy bread and croissants as well as all his delicious cakes and tarts. We over indulged in all the delicious local produce from the nearby markets too.

Your house is a superb place to stay and we all had such a relaxing holiday. Our only regret was only booking for one week instead of longer.

Outstanding House

  • 5 of 5

We have been visiting France as a group for 10 years now and this is by far the most fantastic house that we have stayed in. 10 of us shared this house and in no way did it disappoint. A beautiful, open plan, fully equipped kitchen and laundry room, combined with reading room and separate sitting room (with Wi-Fi and television) made the downstairs space perfect. The kitchen opens onto a lovely terrace where many happy meals were consumed. Also you had a great view of the alarmed pool which was perfect for our children to swim for hours. The garden is enclosed and safe. The bedrooms were lovely, all spacious with ample hanging and storage space. Our girls loved sharing the second floor loft space. The beds and linen were all great quality - something that everyone commented on. The location is super a small village with one of the best bakeries a few hundred yards from the house - gorgeous bread and cakes. We also enjoyed some great trips - a day trip to San Sebastian (where we had some of the best tapas I have ever tasted), water rafting and kayaking, a trip to Biarritz, Lourdes, as well as visits to local fetes and towns. Our son has learning difficulties and this house was perfect - an enclosed garden and the most lovely pool - safe and visible from the house. We loved this area of France and this house. Debbie was lovely to deal with and from the moment of enquiry was incredibly helpful. We cannot wait to return to the area and hopefully to this lovely house

From the Owner

During our many visits to the area over the years Maison Mailhes had always struck us as a very pretty house and so we were really excited to see that it was on the market when we began our search for a holiday home. The minute we walked through the front door we knew this was ‘the house’, and on 15 February 2006 it became ours. A huge amount of work was needed to make it habitable, but we were able to extend into the undeveloped south end of the house and remodel it and to suit our needs. We wanted a house that was perfect for an extended family, two families holidaying together or for a group of friends. We are so pleased with the result as we have a beautiful holiday home with room for friends and family too.

Nearest Airport : Biarritz at 39 Miles Nearest Barpub : Auberge Camy at 400 Metres Nearest Ferry : Bilbao at 131 Miles Nearest Golf : Salies-de-Béarn at 4 Miles Nearest Train : Peyrehorade at 8 Miles Nearest Motorway : A64 at 7 Miles Nearest Restaurant : Hotel-Restaurant Tissier at 200 Metres Nearest Ski : La Pierre Saint Martin at 51 Miles Nearest Beach : Lac de Sames at 12 Miles Car: recommended

The Atlantic beaches are 45 mins away & offer a wide choice including the stylish resort Biarritz, the enchanting Basque village Bidart, the surfers’ paradise Hossegor, and the beautiful and popular St-Jean-de-Luz. Even closer (12 miles) is Lac de Sames with a sandy beach, water slides and pedalos. Lac d'Orthez (15 miles) has all this plus bumper boats. Base de Pop in Guiche (15 miles) is a lovely lake with free swimming, and paddle boards, boats and canoes to hire, but the main attraction is the enormous (and terrifying!) water jump which teenagers love, as well as an 'Aqua Park' for younger children and the less adventurous. Or try Aqua Béarn, a charming water park in Estialescq (37 miles), great fun and suitable for all ages. San Sebastián in Spain, with a strong Basque character and fabulous beach, is less than 1 hour away.

The nearest airports are Biarritz and Pau which are a ¾ hour drive away, and there are several others which aren't too far - Tarbes-Ossun-Lourdes 1 hour, Bordeaux 1¾ hours, Toulouse 2¼ hours. All are served by scheduled and lost-cost airlines, are close to a motorway and have car hire available.

Bilbao ferry port is 131 miles, Santander 185 miles, St Malo 445 miles and Caen 490 miles. We can offer guests up to 10% discount on Brittany Ferries sailings between the UK & France or Spain.

TGVs from Paris stop at Puyoo (15 min drive) and Orthez (25 min drive). Car hire is available in Orthez close to the station.

There are no buses that serve Carresse so a car is pretty much essential, although it is possible to manage with bicycles.

The Village:

People come from several miles around to Carresse’s excellent bakery, just 200m from Maison Mailhes. The village also has a hotel-restaurant, café, post office, pharmacy and hairdresser which are all within 400 metres of Maison Mailhes.

4 miles west is the beautiful, historic spa town of Salies-de-Béarn with thermal baths, shops, numerous restaurants, a casino and sporting facilities including golf and tennis. 4 miles in the opposite direction is Sorde l'Abbaye, a UNESCO site with Roman mosaics, on the Chemin de St Jacques, an ancient pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostella which is still followed today.

This region of France is known for its gastronomy, and there are wonderful markets selling local produce, as well as gift items and souvenirs, in various nearby towns. The area has many excellent restaurants, but a firm favourite with the locals and visitors alike is the Michelin listed La Belle Auberge, just 3 miles away in Castagnède.

The only independent wine producer in the Béarn, Pascal Lapeyre, is in Salies-de-Béarn. The family has been making wine there since 1909 and it is generally agreed that they produce the best wines in the Béarn. Look out for them – Domain Guilhemas and Domaine Lapeyre – in local restaurants and shops. Better still, call in and taste them and see the huge oak barrels containing the aging wine before buying a few bottles to drink at Maison Mailhes or to take home as souvenirs.

There are fascinating medieval towns to explore close by, including Sauveterre-de-Béarn, Orthez, Navarrenx and St Jean Pied de Port. A 25 minute drive south brings you to St-Palais, a market town in the Basque region.

The Gave (river) d’Oloron is within 10 mins walk of Maison Mailhes. It is one of only 2 rivers in France where the salmon still return naturally to their spawning grounds each year, and is reputedly one of the best fishing rivers in France. Our managers can organise fishing permits for our guests. The Gave is also good for swimming and kayaking, and there is white water rafting nearby.

Maison Mailhes is an ideal base for a cycling or walking holiday. Whether you bring your own bikes or hire them nearby they can be safely stored in the shed when not in use. Walkers of all abilities and aspirations are well catered for, with walks ranging from gentle strolls through the beautiful countryside to demanding hikes in the Pyrénées.

Fêtes are a way of life in the Pyrénées Atlantiques – you will be unlucky if you don't encounter one. There are fêtes throughout the year, but every weekend in the summer sees Carresse or a nearby village "en fête" with food, drink, games, music and dancing. Come prepared for a warm welcome!
