About Joy and John Milton

We bought La Varenne as a holiday home 'with a project', and love it so much we moved out here 3 years later. We feel very lucky.

Joy and John Milton purchased this farmhouse in 2006

Why Joy and John Milton chose Dordogne

We renovated the barn intending to create a maison des amis for family and friends, then we moved in - 'down-sizing'?!! We now have a beautiful 4-bedroomed farmhouse, perfect for families and friends, and anyone who likes a bit more space.

With good broadband access, we're able to work from home, and walk, swim or cycle in the afternoon - which is just as well, as the local restaurants are wonderful!

What makes this farmhouse unique

The Dronne Valley is beautiful. We're on the edge of a peaceful village, rather than the middle of nowhere, and are just a short drive from everything we need.

The local café is only a 5 minute walk away, and improving our French is a great reason to visit!

Guestbook comments from the owner

5 of 5 stars

The farmhouse is absolutely faultless. It is very spacious and completely spotless with large authentically french bedrooms and every amenity you could wish for, Joy and John welcomed us with open arms and provided lots of information about the surrounding area. The grounds are IDYLLIC and whilst lying by the pool (on very comfortable loungers) all we could hear were birds and other wild life. We spent out evenings playing board games (lots to choose from) and sitting around the large outside table after cooking in the extremely well equipped kitchen. There is a small country pub 5 minutes walk from the house which also did fish and chip tuesdays which was a nice touch. There is a DVD player and english tv which was a bonus for the evenings after a day out, We will DEFINITELY be returning to this beautiful house!

Great Gite, peaceful location, welcoming owners.

  • 5 of 5

What a lovely place to stay! We were given such a warm and friendly welcome by the owners, Joy and John.

We arrived early in the season on a chilly evening and were greeted by a roaring fire, Joy had lit the woodburner for us to thoroughly warm the Gite. This is typical of Joy and John, they go the extra mile to make your stay enjoyable, nothing is too much trouble. Since they live on site, they have great knowledge of the local area and places to visit.

The Gite is spacious, spotless and very well equipped and situated in a peaceful area of rural France.

We would highly recommend this Gite.

A beautiful and extremely well-equipped gite, with owners that go the extra mile.

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at La Varenne. The owners could not have been more accommodating. Lots to see and do in the area for old and young alike. The gite is also the perfect place to relax if you just want to unwind. All the 5 star reviews are totally justified. A real gem!

La Varenne love affair

  • 5 of 5

This was our 4th stay at La Varenne.Joy and John had kindly booked us in to the local community centre "paella night"!

We had sangria, melon and port, and paella!

Since the previous year's stay the living room had been beautifully re-furnished.The pool-always kept really clean, had been fenced ,adding greater safety, and a decking area covered by canvas, creating a shaded and relaxing area beside the pool. The garden was full of maturing flowering plants, attracting 100's of butterflies.

I took my trainers and took full advantage of the beautiful scenery-woods,fields,and gardens surrounding the gite.

We visited several good restaurants,a short drive from La Varenne-Le Jardin de Brantome,Hotel Charbonnel,Moulin de l'abbeye and the newly owned Les Savuers(probably one of our best evenings for good food ,service, and value.

Loads of seating in the kitchen.Used the washing machine, microwave, oven, and hob-all clean, modern, and easy to use.We ate eggs from Joy and John's hens and walnuts from the garden! It is only a 5minute walk to the small local bar where we were made welcome(fish and chip night on Tuesdays!

We love La Varenne-Joy and John make us so welcome, and we have many lovely memories after 4 visits. We would heartily recommend La Varenne gite!

Owner's Response: Thank you!! That's really kind. The covered pool deck (John calls it the 'executive lounge'!) and new pool fence were a big investment this year, but the great feedback from all our guests has been worth it. Thank you for the restaurant recommendations too, we'll pass those on to guests - and we need to plan a trip to Les Saveurs ourselves! We love having you both, and are so proud that you trusted us enough to return with friends this year. We look forward to welcoming you again very soon. Thank you again, and à bientôt! French Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We recently returned from a wonderful week’s holiday at La Varenne Gite. 9 of us stayed at the Gite (3 generations). The Gite is situated in a quiet little village, just the thing if you want to get away from it all. Busier towns such as Brantome are just a short drive away. The Gite is fully equipped with everything you should need. The rooms are airy and spacious - we never felt on top of one another. The outside area is great. Lots of room for ball games etc. The pool (heated) area is lovely and very safe for little ones – as it’s fully fenced off. There’s even a set of swings – including a toddler swing which my 2 grandchildren loved. Each year Joy and John give a week’s stay at the Gite as a prize to raise funds for Sheffield Hallamshire Hospital, my daughter was the lucky winner – and she took the whole family along - we really couldn’t believe our luck. John and Joy couldn’t have been more welcoming. They were never intrusive, quietly covering and uncovering the pool - even adding a sun canopy over the pool decking area when the weather became really hot. This was done early morning or late evening so as not to intrude or disturb us. We found a bottle of wine and eggs waiting for us when we arrived, with fresh eggs supplied later in the week. (The grandchildren loved feeding the chickens.) We hope to visit again sometime.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your lovely comments. We're so pleased the children - and Mums and Dads and Grandparents! - enjoyed their stay at La Varenne. Thank you too for your kind donation to Sheffield Hospitals Charity, and to everyone who bought a raffle ticket last year. It was our pleasure to meet your wonderful family, and we look forward to welcoming you all again one day! À bientôt, and thank you again, Joy, John, Fleur and The Chooks x

Perfect bolthole in perfect Dordogne

  • 5 of 5

This is the second time we've stopped at La Varenne so that should tell you something. We rarely if ever revisit a holiday location/gite a second time, after all, its a big world.

So what's special about La Varenne? Lots of things:-

1. The house itself. Spotlessly immaculate. Not my words, those of the missus and as she's an obsessive re: cleanliness, high praise indeed

2. The location. 45ish minutes from Limoges airport, and a short hop north of perfect Brantome. There's also a supermarket 5 mins away by car, and a great restaurant. There's also a bar within walking distance. These are very important requirements and often not met in other gites we've stopped in, where buying groceries can be a long distance chore.

3. The owners - Joy and John. Both are understanding hosts and live in the nearby barn. This is useful if there are any issues or problems - far better than the owner residing overseas. Joy and John are pretty good judges of character. They try to work out whether a guest likes a degree of interaction with them, or would prefer to be left in peace.

4. The gardens and pool. Again, immaculate. Its a perfectly flat and very well maintained garden with walnut trees, fig trees, and others. Ripe for exploring. The pool is what I'd term a 'proper' pool, not one of these plunge affairs which you can't swim in.

5. It gets better! Because the owners live there, Joy and John are regularly improving and already splendid property. Since we last visited there are many minor and some major benefits, the decked sun patio area for example.

So, as you've probably guessed by now, I really do like this place and strongly recommend it to all
