We fell in love with this lovely original stone farmhouse and bought it in 2006. We renovated the barns to create a 'maison des amis', then we moved in! Having 'down-sized' we now have a beautiful, comfortably furnished home available for friends, family and guests.

The farmhouse is absolutely faultless. It is very spacious and completely spotless with large authentically french bedrooms and every amenity you could wish for, Joy and John welcomed us with open arms and provided lots of information about the surrounding area. The grounds are IDYLLIC and whilst lying by the pool (on very comfortable loungers) all we could hear were birds and other wild life. We spent out evenings playing board games (lots to choose from) and sitting around the large outside table after cooking in the extremely well equipped kitchen. There is a small country pub 5 minutes walk from the house which also did fish and chip tuesdays which was a nice touch. There is a DVD player and english tv which was a bonus for the evenings after a day out, We will DEFINITELY be returning to this beautiful house!

Perfect bolthole in perfect Dordogne

This is the second time we've stopped at La Varenne so that should tell you something. We rarely if ever revisit a holiday location/gite a second time, after all, its a big world.

So what's special about La Varenne? Lots of things:-

1. The house itself. Spotlessly immaculate. Not my words, those of the missus and as she's an obsessive re: cleanliness, high praise indeed

2. The location. 45ish minutes from Limoges airport, and a short hop north of perfect Brantome. There's also a supermarket 5 mins away by car, and a great restaurant. There's also a bar within walking distance. These are very important requirements and often not met in other gites we've stopped in, where buying groceries can be a long distance chore.

3. The owners - Joy and John. Both are understanding hosts and live in the nearby barn. This is useful if there are any issues or problems - far better than the owner residing overseas. Joy and John are pretty good judges of character. They try to work out whether a guest likes a degree of interaction with them, or would prefer to be left in peace.

4. The gardens and pool. Again, immaculate. Its a perfectly flat and very well maintained garden with walnut trees, fig trees, and others. Ripe for exploring. The pool is what I'd term a 'proper' pool, not one of these plunge affairs which you can't swim in.

5. It gets better! Because the owners live there, Joy and John are regularly improving and already splendid property. Since we last visited there are many minor and some major benefits, the decked sun patio area for example.

So, as you've probably guessed by now, I really do like this place and strongly recommend it to all

A perfect relaxing 'home from home'

We had a simply wonderful week at La Varenne - we were a group of 7 - grandparents, parents and 3 (very tall) teenage grand-daughters. There was plenty of room for us all to do our own thing, and every possible comfort in the house and garden - and a beautifully maintained swimming pool with loads of sun beds and sun parasols. Joy and John were so welcoming and always on hand if there were any queries. They were extremely tactful and deliberately unobtrusive. The house was spotlessly clean, the beds far too comfortable, and the kitchen equipment was right up to date.

We didn't travel about much as we were so happy to relax 'at home' but did venture out to a couple of markets, and also went canoe-img in nearby beautiful Brantome. There was plenty to do in and around the property.

In other words - a perfect perfect holiday home. We will be back!

Wonderful holiday in the lovely La Varenne. Weather was fantastic as was the house, pool and the surrounding area. John and Joy are lovely and exactly as described in previous reviews. Can't recommend it enough!

Definately 5 star!

This is the second time we have stayed at La Varenne and once again it was a magical holiday.

The property itself is in excellent condition with good sized rooms and is well equipped and very clean. We stayed as a group of 8 (2 families) and found there to be plenty of space to either sit and chat as a whole, or to find your own quiet corner in which to relax.

The farmhouse is well located for travelling out to local attractions, and a well stocked supermarket is available in a close by village.

Joy and John are extremely friendly and welcoming hosts, providing the local knowledge of 'what's on when' as well as recommending places to visit. There was even a welcome drink on arrival !

We love this farmhouse so much, that we are already looing to re-book for next year.

Perfect in every way!

We stayed in this fantastic villa in July/August 2014. We had a lovely welcoming off the owners John and Joy who sat with us by the pool and gave us ideas of where and what to do - with a lovely glass of bubbly too! They really have thought of everything clean towels (sorry Joy we really did use them all didn't we!) barbecue, board games, satellite tv and even eggs from the chooks! This villa was spacious, clean, welcoming and had the best heated pool, which John looked after always (even when they had been out late)! My girls loved watching John in the cattery too! I can honestly say that it is the most relaxing holiday we have had in beautiful surroundings. The fish and chips at the local on the Tuesday evening were a must, and John and Joy were there enjoying them too! A true insight into French life! John and Joy are perfect hosts and when our car broke down they even helped us sort it out! We will definitely be coming back soon! Thanks :)

Five Star Farmhouse & Five Star Hosts!

In March 2013 I was the very lucky winner of the Sheffield Hospital's Charity and the prize was a weeks' stay in a French Farmhouse. The French Farmhouse just so happened to be the lovely La Varenne owned by the equally lovely Joy & John Milton! Myself, my partner Danny and three of our family members spent a wonderful week here, Joy & John warmly welcomed us to their beautiful home and couldn't do enough for us. It was our first visit to the Dordogne and it certainly won't be our last - we can't wait to go back! La Varenne is in beautiful countryside by the River Dronne, a quiet location which is perfect for a relaxing holiday and there is a local bar only 5 minutes walk away where we enjoyed fish, chips and mushy peas! We couldn't believe how quiet the roads were, so lovely to drive on and so different to the busy city roads of Sheffield - no potholes either!! La Varenne has everything you need, it was perfect and we wanted for nothing. We visited the beautiful town of Brantome and it truly is beautiful. We enjoyed the pleasure of Joy & John's company on a couple of occasions during our stay, one of which was a lovely meal at the Hotel De France - a lovely family run hotel serving delicious food and providing excellent service. A fantastic week was had by us all, we discovered a beautiful part of France and found two new friends in Joy & John. We renovated the barn intending to create a maison des amis for family and friends, then we moved in - 'down-sizing'?!! We now have a beautiful 4-bedroomed farmhouse, perfect for families and friends, and anyone who likes a bit more space. With good broadband access, we're able to work from home, and walk, swim or cycle in the afternoon - which is just as well, as the local restaurants are wonderful!

Special interest holidays:

Walking and Cycling. We're minutes from the beautiful Périgord Voie Verte.

We have several basic adult bicycles available f.o.c. for guests who'd like to cycle for their bread. For more serious cyclists, there are excellent cycle hire facilities close by who also drop and collect.

Coast/Beach:

20 minutes drive from two beautiful inland swimming lakes.

2 hours drive to the South West coast of France - Royan, Bordeaux.

Travel:

Less than 1.5 hours flight from UK.

Only 1 hour from Limoges Airport, 1.5 hours from Bergerac Airport. Airport car hire easily available (Hertz, Europcar, etc). Cheap Ryanair flights from UK, including Leeds Bradford, Liverpool, East Midlands, Bristol, Stansted.

We have the best of the Dordogne, in beautiful countryside by the River Dronne, close to many tourist attractions:

St Jean de Cole: 'un des plus beaux villages'.

Périgueux: the capital of the Périgord - historic buildings, café culture and gourmet delicacies.

Brantôme: 'the Venice of the Perigord' with Renaissance Buildings, restaurants, markets, canoeing.

Oradour-sur-Glane: memorial village.

Chateaux: at Villars, Bourdeilles, and further afield.

Grotte de Villars: Stunning cave.

Further Details:

Friendly cafe bar 5 minutes walk. Local shops, pharmacy, boulangerie, butchers, supermarket 5 minutes drive. Markets in surrounding villages and towns most days of the week. St Pardoux la Riviere has one of the best restaurants in the region. Safe walks, quiet level roads and purpose built cycling pathways. Inland lakes and beaches within 20 minutes.

The Dronne Valley is beautiful. We're on the edge of a peaceful village, rather than the middle of nowhere, and are just a short drive from everything we need. The local café is only a 5 minute walk away, and improving our French is a great reason to visit!

We feel very lucky to be able to welcome guests to La Varenne. It's so beautiful, and we love to see how much our guests love it too. We are not far away, and are happy to help when needed with recommendations, directions, reservations, translation...please just ask. Outside: The farmhouse and barns are set in private gardens. Large, in ground heated pool occasionally shared with owners 10m by 4m with large Roman step, patio and deck. Enclosed courtyard and large table for sunny outdoor dining. BBQ area. Lots of walks/opportunities to explore. Woods, pigeonnier, cave used as old wartime hide. Riverbank at the edge of the property. English/French speakers close by. Friendly cafe bar with indoor/outdoor seating, pool and billiards within 5 minutes walk. Cleaning / Maid service: A change of towels and linen are provided. Mid-stay cleaning is available with notice for a small additional charge.
