'Wisteria'. Our Cosy, secluded and Romantic Hideaway for Two.

Updated: 20-Aug-2016
Wisteria Cottage, Duault, Callac, Cotes d'Armor, Brittany, France. - Tranquil, Rural Location Set in the Grounds of Le Manoir Du Neveit, Easy Drive to the Coast.

Looking for that perfect hideaway? Then look no further. Wisteria Cottage is our cosy, romantic and discreet hideaway for two people. The living area on the ground floor is open plan and there is a double bedroom on the first floor. At the rear of the property is a large south facing paved terrace equipped with table, chairs, sunloungers, barbeque, even a nearby hammock. The cottage stands in the award winning park like gardens of le Manoir and enjoys panoramic views of the Forest of Duault. Guests are not restricted to the cottage gardens and are encouraged to search out the secluded hot spots in the garden as the sun moves round. For the more adventurous, you could amble the 300m down the rarely used farm track to the little trout stream which ripples through the hay meadow, find a shady spot under a tree and watch the numerous butterflies as they bask in the sun. If you are lucky, you might also see the herons searching for fish and the deer coming out to feed in the evenings.

About the Owner

Having both led busy lives and not wishing everything to come to a halt on retirement, it had always been our intention to have some form of joint interest when we retired. It was love at first sight when we saw le Manoir in March 2002. We felt so passionately about the house and this most beautiful part of central Brittany that within three months we were installed and it had become our new home. We love the slower pace and quality of life and the lack of stress. One of our guests has since declared this to be a Stress Free Zone. There is little traffic on the roads it is still a pleasure to drive and the warm and friendly Bretons are so welcoming and embracing. In view of this that we thought it would be nice to ‘loan’ some of the old house to paying guests who had similar appreciations.

We have enjoyed the best two weeks in such a beautiful part of France. The Cottage has felt like home away from home, it is beautifully renovated, so comfortable with everything we needed. Carolyn & Steve are the greatest hosts, their kindness, generosity and hard work seems to have no bounds, we feel privileged to have met them and their friends. We leave here with very fond memories, and the proud new owners of a chandelier(Thanks to Peter & Olga!), how could we ever forget le Manoir du neveit now! Best Wishes Paul & Jo, Adelaide, Australia.

Well here we are again - Michael & Julie Payne from Colchester, Essex! We came 3 times last year but have only managed the one visit this year sadly. We will see you again in 2011. Lots of love to you both & thank you sooo much for your kind hospitality.

Again it was superb. we see you both back in August with our friends from Belgium(8 persons) and our friends from the UK, especially Adam with the Guitar. We love you - Roger and Sonja

Cosy & Warm. Even in March

  • 5 of 5

We came back for a second stay recently.

Arrived to find the log burner working well and the cottage toasty warm.

Everything clean and working just as well as on our last stay.

We were met as friends by Carolyn & Steve who live close nearby.

Wisteria is in a lovely part of Brittany, rolling hills and panoramic views all round.

Our last review of Wisteria was 5 stars and nothing has changed. It is still lovely.

Serenaded to sleep by owls one night this year.

Light pollution is very low and you can see a sky full of stars on a clear night.

Thanks again Steve and Carolyn.

Hope to see you later this year.

Ian & Ange.

Owner's Response: Hello you two romantics, thank you for your wonderful review, hopefully you will find your own Wisteria soon. Glad to hear that you have arrived home safely, it must have been a dreadful drive up to Caen and an even worse crossing? Already looking forward to seeing you both later in the year, and thank you so much for leaving Wisteria spotless. Kindest regards Steve and Carolyn."

A brilliant base to either...

  • 4 of 5

Sit relax and rid yourself of the stresses of life or to use as a base to explore the beauty of Brittany.

Steve & Carolyn are excellent hosts, there to help but not intrusive.

The cottage itself has everything you need an nothing you don't. Small but perfectly formed

Local shop 1.5 miles away for essentials, Callac 5 miles away for a large well stocked supermarket and a few bars and restaurants.

Highly recommended

Ideal Getaway

Delightful cottage in the middle of nowhere. Only noise that was heard was the nouse of birdsong! Lovely welcome from Steve&Carolyn-lovely genuine couple. Everything we needed in the cottage. Visited three restaurants (as recommended) by Steve--Brasserie in L'oqueric being the best, le Bonnet Rouge at Cauhaex(spelling) and Pizzaria in the local village. The Vally of the Saints is well worth a visit! A 9 out of 10 holiday--thanks Steve&Carolyn. From Stuart and Ellen Edge

Weekend Break

  • 5 of 5

We did a very late booking to stay 3 nights and was greeted by at lit log burner and a very warm cosy cottage. Steve and Carolyn were very welcoming and kind owners. Had a wonderful 4 days exploring the local area looking for a property of our own. We will defiantly be back in the near future to continue our property hunt.😄👍

I booked online for a one week stay, then at the last minute, we had to change our ferry.

I rang the owners directly and they were very helpful adjusting our dates and arrival time.

We drove through Duault to Wisteria Cottage to find a beautiful little cottage exactly as pictured.

Turned off the motor to be greeted with absolute silence only broken by the sound of birds.

Inside the cottage, everything is pristine, even the cutlery & crockery appeared polished.

Everything worked well, all electrical goods, TV etc. The bed is comfortable with lovely quality sheets and covers,

the towels supplied were also thick & fluffy, no shortcuts have been taken in the cottage at all.

We went there in March for a one week holiday and used the log burner on a daily basis.

It lit easily each day and, with Steve & Carolyn's endless supply of logs, kept us toasty warm.

There is a large towel radiator in the bathroom, so all the cottage was cosy & dry.

The cottage is a short walk from Duault where there is a Tabac supplying essentials.

If you like, special buns & pastries can be ordered for fresh, next day delivery by the local baker.

Within one week, and using my poor, schoolboy French, we were greeted most days with hand-shakes as each local arrived.

It is a small old-fashioned hamlet where everybody knows each other. Imagine 1930s England village life.

Steve & Carolyn treated us as friends rather than guests and made us feel very welcome.

All in all, a perfect little place for a weeks holiday.

Biggest problem I can think of......we had to come home.

Would we go again?

Absolutely! If you fancy Wisteria Cottage, book early as the calendar is filling fast!

From the Owner

As soon as we saw the photographs of Le Manoir on the internet we were hooked and couldn't wait to see for ourselves. It was love at first sight and within three months we were moved in. It was going to be hard work for Steve as half the property was derelict, broken beams, collapsed roofs and huge fallen stone fireplaces, as well as two derelict cottages in the grounds, but Steve knew he could put everything right. Nine years later and many euros spent, we are almost finished, nothing has been spared. The property nestles in the beautiful Breton countryside. Tucked away down a windy country lane, we have little traffic, but you may see the occasional tractor. Despite being seclude we are only three minutes away from our local bar where we buy our fabulous fresh bread and croissants daily

Most of the beautiful towns and beaches around the Rose granite and Emerald coasts are within a comfortable 50 mins drive from us. They are too numerous to mention here, but we would be more than pleased to tell you of our favourite beauty spots and places to eat when you arrive. eg. Sunday morning, take a leisurely drive to the market town of Plestin les Greves, take in the sights, and smells of the bustling market, drive 5km to Loquirec for seafood lunch then relax on the beach, fantastic!

Wisteria is within easy reach of ports and airports. If you are flying into one of the airports a hire car, or the use of a car is essential. Cars can be hired on line and collected at the airports, Hertz, Avis and Europcar being among the most popular. Distance to Airports - Dinard (Pleurtuit) 142km/1hr 30min, Brest (Guipavas) 107km/1hr 10min. Distance to Ports - Roscoff 74km/1hr 10min, St. Malo 160km/2hrs, Caen 296km/3hrs, Cherbourgh 346km/3hrs 40 min, Le Havre 391km/4hrs.

Duault is our nearest village being just 1km away. Callac is our nearest market town just 6 km away. Other towns in our immediate region are, Carhaix-Plouger 16 Km/16min, Rostrenen 22Km/31min, Guingamp 35km/34min, Morlaix 46Km/46 min, St-Brieuc 68Km/1hr. Most of the beautiful towns and beaches around the Rose granite and Emerald coasts are within a comfortable 50 mins drive, but are too numerous to mention here. We would be pleased to advise you as to our favourites when you arrive.

Further Details:

Our nearest village Duault has a busy Bar Tabac, here you can buy your basic groceries, fruit, vegetables, fresh bread, croissants, cigarettes, tobacco, beer, wine stamps etc.

The town of Callac is a market town, boasting a busy market on Wednesdays.

The town has its own railway station with direct connections to the TGV (You can breakfast in Callac and have lunch in Paris) Callac has two banks, two supermarkets, two doctors surgeries, two dentists, pharmacy, veterinary surgery, lovely gift shops, cafes and restaurants. Within an easy drive there are two modern swimming pools with water shutes, a childrens adventure park and if it is raining the very interesting Oceanopolis.

There is such a diversity of interests in the area from the Megaliths in Carnac to the artists regional centre at Pont Aven, to Le Vallee des Saints at Carnoet, which is a new "Project for enternity" where it is intended to create 1000 huge granite statues of saints depicting the ancient history of Brittany. The site is believed to be the scene of a bloody battle between the troops of Richard 1st and the Barons of Brittany in 1197 where the English were defeated.

Locally there is a lot of of history from WW2, for example the Forest of Duault was home to resistance fighters and many allies, who because of their activities attracted the attentions of the German command and several thousand German troops were sent into the area to flush them out. A bloody battle ensued, many Germans were killed and the resistance fighters remained entrenched.

All this aside, it has been our experience that when our guests arrive and settle in, the majority seem quite reluctant to want to travel further afield and are quite content just to relax and chill on site.

From the Owner

We have really good French neighbours, they take a great interest in what we are doing and love to get involved. Steve says it's like living in the UK sixty years ago when he was a young lad. Nobody locks their doors, and family values are paramount. We have peace of mind knowing that we can leave the house and all will be well and that we will never be mugged etc. Our fabulous panoramic views are second to non and waking up each morning with just the birds singing and no traffic noise is blissful. We love our home and feel we do pass this feeling on to our guests who stay either Chambre d'Hote or in one of our beautiful self catering cottages, Wisteria or Hydrangea. Many guests return again and again, so we now have many friends and look forward to their visits, so why not join them?

  • Notes on accommodation: Wisteria Cottage as it is now known, was originally built as accommodation for the families that worked the land of the Manoir. The Manoir was built in 1647 but although very old, Wisteria does not date back that far. When we bought the property in 2002 Wisteria was derelict, just four walls, it was one of two properties left standing in the grounds. Originally there were several other cottages nestling around the Manoir but these have long since disappeared. A total ground up restoration of Wisteria has just been completed with the needs of our guests in mind. It has been extensively insulated, double glazed and had a wood burner installed, so is completely suitable for all year living. The large full width terrace at the rear increases the living area significantly in the summer and is equipped with a barbecue, table/chairs and sun loungers. The large south facing window from the dining area opens out to the patio and doubles as a very convenient serving hatch. Outside: Wisteria has it's own south facing lawned garden which overlooks the Forest of Duault. The garden is equipped with a table, chairs and parasol, sun loungers, barbeque etc. Guests are not restricted to the cottage garden and should feel free to explore the award winning gardens of Le Manoir. Ample on site parking is available. Utility Room: Also provided is a vacuum cleaner, ironing board, iron, brushes, dustpans, mop, bucket etc. There are clothes line facilities (pegs provided). Use of owners tumble drier on request. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All towels and linen are included in the price, and for those staying longer than one week these would be changed weekly.
