About Lucy Brown

We're Lucy & Andrew and have three children, ages 6, 8 & 10. We live and work in Nottinghamshire and when possible enjoy spending our time in the beautiful Peak District.

Lucy Brown purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Lucy Brown chose Tideswell

Nowhere else in the UK will you find a wide variety of stunning scenery, beautiful places to visit, a wealth of things to see and do and quality places to eat and drink in such a compact area.

Nestling right in the heart of the Peak District, Tideswell is easy to reach and is an ideal location to enjoy a short break or longer stay at any time of the year. Nearby you can visit the famous caverns at Castleton, watch Otters at the Chestnut Centre Conservation Park or visit Freshfields Donkey Village at Peak Forest.

Enjoy a trip to Matlock Bath - featuring the Peak District Mining Museum and the Heights of Abraham, where you can enjoy stunning views of the Derwent Valley from the heights of a cable car. There are also many historic houses and castles including Chatsworth House.

What makes this cottage unique

Tideswell is a perfect location for enjoying both the 'White' peak and 'Dark' peak areas of the Peak District National Park. The village offers everything you need for either a short stay or long holiday and the locals are very friendly and willing to help.

Guests can easily spend their whole stay on superb local walks and activities, (fishing, cycling, rock climbing) that start from the door of the cottage or use the car to travel a short distance to visit the market towns of Ashbourne, Buxton & Bakewell. Or explore one of the many picturesque villages, such as the famous 'Plague' village of Eyam, Ashford in the Water with its ancient sheepwash bridge or Dovedale and the famous stepping stones.

Short Breaks available between November to March.

Free WIFI available.

Super cottage- clean, beautifully decorated and lovely location

  • 5 of 5

We booked this as a last minute holiday and were delighted with all aspects of the cottage. It was situated in a lovely village with all the amenities that we needed (bell ringing upon arrival was an added bonus!) The owners were extremely helpful and the cottage was very clean and tidy as well as being well equipped and very well set up for children (travel cot, stair gate, toys, books etc.) We had beautiful weather and were able to explore a new area of the country. Our three year old who doesn't always like being away from home loved it.

We will definitely be back!

Lovely cottage, perfect location

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely week at the end of September. The cottage is well-equipped and we had everything we needed. A shame there is no garden - the picture is of the property across the road, however, there was a handy patch of grass at the end of the street for the dog's 4a.m. wee!

There is a handy book of instructions and information but no info about what to do when your husband's enthusiastic cooking sets the smoke alarm off !! But we figured it out.

We visited Buxton, Bakewell and Matlock, all within reasonable driving time, as well as lots of villages roundabout. If you're looking for dog walks, we found it very difficult to find somewhere safe to walk the dog that was also not too onerous for a couple of 'a certain age'. The Monsal trail is flat and lovely but there's an incredibly steep and dangerous drop at one side for much of it and we had to keep our curious dog on the lead for most of the time. There's lots of livestock around, so, again, the dog had to stay on the lead a lot of the time.

We enjoyed some lovely walks and stunning views of a part of the country very different to our own.

I recommend following the trail around the village itself, using the information leaflet in the cottage - it was very interesting.

Generally good.

  • 4 of 5

Well equipped, but beginning of holiday was quite chilly in the evenings and would have liked to have been able to have the fire on but it was completely impossible to light. Also we found that the sofa bed was not very comfortable, as we kept sliding off and had to pack it with pillows to to keep it level. (This was just a couple of points of constructive criticism) the beds were extremely comfortable and we slept very well and had a lovely week's break!

Lovely cottage, great location, clean and beds very comfy

  • 5 of 5

May cottage is just a short walk to the centre of Tidewell, which is such a lovely village with lovely cafes, bakery and fish and chip shop.

The cottage itself is light and really well kept, stocked with everything you need and has super comfy beds. Lots of thoughtful touches like tea, coffee, milk and biscuits on arrival. Loo roll and hand soap.

I went with myself and 2 young children 5&7 and I think it would be very cozy to fit 2 grown ups and 2 children around the extended kitchen table, however this cottage is such great value for money and a great location I'd certainly give it a go!!

Personally I would prefer a wood burner to a gas fire but it worked perfectly well when we needed it and kept us toasty.

We were able to park outside the cottage everyday and as I said it's very central to explore the dales and dark Peak too.

Locals very friendly and you can see cows from the kitchen window!!

We had a lovely holiday and will be back to May Cottage again 😊?
