Spacious, comfortable and full of character!

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful holiday. My family of 8 enjoyed the French life for almost two weeks in beautiful surrounds and in a wonderful unique house. The village of La Bussiere was a good base from which to explore the Loire valley visiting local towns and chateaus. The restored priory was roomy so everyone could find their own space, coming together for meals and games. The house was well equipped and each member of my family thoroughly enjoyed the time in the beautiful old house. The local La Bussiere Chateau and its grounds were a delight to visit and explore. Gien and Briare were visited regularly during our stay as they were close by and offered more variety in grocery shopping and markets. However the local store in La Bussiere was fairly well equipped and the shop keeper very helpful and friendly. Our other trips included Montargis, Orleans, Fontainbleau, Chambord and Sully Sur Loire as well as many little places in between. Being so close to Paris we were able to drive and park and then catch a train into the capital to explore its offerings. It was all relatively simple. We enjoyed exploring chateaus and particularly liked the fairytale castle at Sully Sur Loire. The boat ride on the canals at Briare was a unique experience too.

The only issue I had with the property itself was that the lawns needed mowing and the gardens tending. Upon leaving there was some confusion about the sheets but that was sorted with a phone call. I will be recommending this property to family and friends.

A wonderful stay

  • 4 of 5

We hired this venue last summer for two weeks. We have been to France most years and love it. This place was different. Absolutely loaded with character - the property, the locality and the surrounding area.

The property and contents were enough to keep the children occupied and content. The kitchen was fully functional and easy to use.

The gardens were great too- totally private, secluded and secure. We did missed a swimming pool, but there again, it didnt advertise one!

It was like going into someones home - trawling through loads of interesting and fascinating books.

Travel a little bit and there are loads of fanatastic butchers and shops.

There was a issue on departure in respect of the cleaning charge and this caused us a bit of unnecessary hassle.

However, the owner has wisely changed their policy on this and it is a non issue for future tenants so it would be unfair of me to mark the property down on this basis. On that basis I dont hesitate to give it a good rating and recommendation for prospective renters.

Highly recommended

  • 5 of 5

We came over to celebrate our mother's 80th birthday celebration. There were 17 of us in total from different parts of the globe. Clear directions to get to the house might have saved us getting lost, but once we got there we had a ball. The house has so much character and is so spacious it met all our expectations. It has three good sized bathrooms, a large and well equipped kitchen. The house is rather quirky each room has character. Some DIY to the house might have improved it somewhat, such as a door to the large children's bedroom. However we just had such a memorable time there. The house is very private and has it's own gates, so you can park the cars in the front without any concern. The children had a dream time, running round the garden after the dog, playing hide and seek. There is also a beautiful Chateau just next door. We had such a lovely time there. What a lovely memory for us all including my mother. I would highly recommend this house.

Owner's Response: These people are the most charming and attentionate tenants of all. Although I have met them less than they have met our house I highly recommand them and wish them all the best. Hugues Le Monnier

France as I hoped it would be

  • 4 of 5

I booked this large historic house for a holiday for three generations of our family. I love history and particularly old buildings so I was very happy to find that this former priory lived up to all my expectations. I could have settled down there permanently and cared for the house and the garden, shopped for fresh croissants every day for breakfast, and popped out to the local bar for a few beers or a glass of wine.

The lady who looked after the house didn't speak English and my French was from my school days getting on for 50 years ago but we managed. At the times when we couldn't work out what we were saying to each other, we could call the owners in Paris and they happily translated for us both over the mobile phone.

The facilities were what I expected to find based on the details. The property is big but full of character and cleaned between guests with a charge made. Plenty of towels, the beds were clean and comfortable. The facilities were adequate for our needs and the décor and furnishings were durable so we felt our young Grandchildren were able to relax and enjoy themselves too. In fact I found the house and garden to be aimed at children very much with plenty of toys to play with and the garden enclosed with a high wall and lockable big gates. They could run free and play without my fretting about them straying outside into the village streets.

The owners did provide a good backup service for us and seem very nice people indeed. We have made a suggestion or two that have said they will do asap, like some sun loungers in the garden for example.

Places we enjoyed visiting were:

The local Chateau - La Bussiere - which was very good.

Amboise

Sancerre

Local towns and other Chateaux which are many and lovely.

The small bar in the village which served good beer.

The village bakery where my Grandchildren were up and out with their Dad every day to buy breakfast.

In summary I would love to stay here again for longer, I loved the old house with its history and to me it felt very 'French'. If I had to be 'picky' it would be based on very personal things - I like white bed sheets, I wasn't sure about the sisal floor covering as it smelt a bit strong in the large upstairs rooms but I have to say it fitted the ambience well. I did get a little confused over a laundry charge for tablecloths, but this is a small thing. I felt the owners went to some trouble for us, eg translating the information at the house into English for us.

Lovely Massive Classic House

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for a family weekend at the end of last year and were blown away by the house. It has the most fabulous entertaining rooms and wonderful quirky bedrooms.

I found the owner to be extremely helpful and charming and our french relatives were so taken with the place that they used it again for another party.

It was winter when we were there but the garden was a good size, there were masses of toys for the children and the kitchen was excellent.

All round a great house..
