About the Owner

We are Giles and Sarah Curtis. Over the last twelve years Sarah and I have been fortunate enough to share our time between Courant and London, where we have a Children's Indoor Adventure Playground, the Pirates Playhouse. Our four children George, Anna, Phoebe and Teddy have grown used to summers in France. Anna particularly, under the rather too close supervision of Florian, has fluent French and as well as our guests we have a regular passage of friends coming to see us.

Certainly Not For Us

  • 1 of 5

Barn House - We arrived at the property to discover our welcome pack consisted of two toilet rolls, milk, a bottle of wine and some tea bags left by the previous occupants. The kitchen area (part of the living room) has a food prep area of approx 40 cm x 40cm. There is absolutely no way catering for six people would be possible. We struggled with two of us - quite funny when the baguette is twice as long as the food prep area. The cooker is a gas bottle driven nightmare with no instructions - we had to ask the owner how to switch it on. Oh and there were no matches to light it and it is impossible with the clickers they provide. The cupboards were entirely empty - not even any salt. We had to buy everything - even an oven tray and glasses. The property is very, very basic and the furnishings cheap and nasty - the table and chairs outside are the cheapest possible flimsy things and the sofas look about 30 years old. The bathroom is basically a stud walled area of the living room. The TV (a 14 inch ancient thing) had no aerial to receive any TV stations and although there is a DVD player, there were no DVDs. The cassette stereo system, the TV and all the furnishings look like they have been taken from a skip. "Linen provided" - means threadbare sheets and duvet covers - no towels whatsoever. There were also handles missing from wardrobe, no mattress protectors, lack of plug sockets, lack of storage space (ridiculous if 6 people actually were to stay). Although we realise living in a gite wouldn't normally include many creature comforts, we had to leave half way through our holiday as we really weren't enjoying it at all. With a three month old baby, sometimes quiet is necessary and unfortunately the 'games area' with a loud wooden ball / pool table game located through a wall from the bedroom, sleep after 0830 ish impossible. The washing machine (one used by all residents and the owners for washing the ancient faded bedsheets) has one setting - 60 degrees. On a positive note the pools look good and the shower was powerful although the entire bathroom was soaked in the process as there was a large gap at the back of the bath and the shower screen was woefully inadequate. Incidentally the gite we moved to was spectacular in comparison. We'll certainly never be back.

Owner's Response: Just before this family left, two others left at the same time, shaking my hand profusely and thanking me - we have had seasons when almost everyone has rebooked. I was therefore a little shocked when they said they were leaving because 'it wasn't what they had expected.' We knew that they weren't ideal for our place as they were a couple with a very young baby, which meant that our facilities - the pools, play area, games room and large sand pit - weren't of much use to them. The other families on site had children of a similar age and were running around in packs (perhaps a little noisily). This family were strangely silent towards us and much of the criticisms that have been mentioned could have been addressed had there been a dialogue. This is the first year we have provided a 'welcome pack' and I checked with other gite owners as to what was generally provided. It was also the first year we've offered linen, so it is surprising to hear it described as 'threadbare,' as most of it was new. Had we been asked we would have happily supplied towels. The sofas are large, leather, clean with no tears or rips and comfy. They aren't new, probably around ten years old, but are perfectly serviceable. There is a mahogany sideboard and table, neither were cheap. There are two wardrobes. Without listing an inventory, there are eight of everything from plates to cutlery. There are a number of sauce pans and baking trays and it appears to suggest that there are no glasses supplied, which is strange as we provide eight tumblers, wine glasses and coffee cups. If anything else is required we will always happily provide it. There have been many families over the last 17 years that have not had a problem with the kitchen and many have returned. The cooker runs from a gas bottle in common with all the rural gites in France where there is no town gas. The cooker provided is modern, clean and sizeable. The ’60' on the washing machine refers to minutes not degrees and means that it is more than adequate to service the complex. We have a large library of DVDS. There are few things more painful than learning that one of our guests has not enjoyed their stay with us and I shall, for next season, look at the welcome pack, ensure all our linen is new, upgrade the televisions, see if I can enlarge the food preparation area, as well as ensuring that those who book have children of a suitable age and enjoy socialising with other guests.

Lovely place, kid friendly, very relaxed

  • 5 of 5

We were a family of 2 adults and 2 small kids (3 and 6 years) and we couldn't have enjoyed our stay in the Gites more. They are situated in a tranquil, authentic French village so its very peaceful and relaxing as soon as you arrive. However there is a large town within 10 min drive with all amenities. Giles the owner was on hand if we needed anything and was very helpful with any queries we had. Inside the Gite has everything you need- its not 5 star but its very comfortable and very spacious. And they provide lots of little extras like dish clothes, washing up liquid, tea towels, handsoap- just makes arriving a bit easier. We forgot to buy charcoal for the BBQ on our first night and Giles happily donated some so we didn't have to drive back out to get some. As soon as we arrived we showed the 6 year old around the whole place- the swings, the sandpit and the barn with the fussball table - she then knew everywhere she was allowed to go and had the run of the place. It's all enclosed so very safe. The pool is fenced off too so good safety. It was also lovely for a dip on the hotter days and the kids loved it. We had enough privacy in our Gite yet there are lots of others around that its also quite sociable if you want. We were lucky as there were other people around with kids and we all enjoyed the company. In terms of sightseeing- there are heaps of things to see and nothing is more than an hour if you don't want it to be. This is a beautiful relaxed part of the world. We ate lunches out if we wanted to eat out and then BBQ'd in every night as that suited us with the small kids. The local town has loads of restaurants and a fab market. There's good Wi-Fi in the barn. If you are lucky too, Giles may even treat you to tune .....! Overall I would describe the place as friendly, relaxed and very enjoyable.

The perfect family break

  • 5 of 5

We chose frenchfamilygites.com hoping for a relaxing holiday, a clean place to stay, where the kids can roam around safely (we have 3), a pool, close to everything else on offer in the area. We got all that, plus we got some great friends in Giles and Sarah (and family) who run the place. We've been back 3 times so far...

Hugely enjoyable family holiday

  • 5 of 5

Going on holiday with children is so often about finding ways to keep them entertained during the day, and sitting by yourselves in the evening after they've gone to sleep. The Owl House is one of five gites around a communal swimming pool, and there are always plenty of other kids around for them to play with - and that means they can entertain themselves while you get on with the business of relaxing.

In the evening, there's always a group of like-minded adults around to share a glass of wine and a barbecue, giving you a chance to wind down while your kids are sleeping just a few yards away. And Giles and Sarah, the hosts, are very sociable and entertaining, even when Giles gets his ukulele out and starts to sing. Highly recommended.

Location

From the Owner

Sometime ago we hired a villa with a swimming pool in the Vendee. We spent much of our time entertaining our children or saving them from the perils of the site! One day we talked to a couple whose children were of a similar age. They, unlike us, were staying on a large camp site and there were plenty of other children to help entertain and play with their own. A couple of years later we too decided to go camping. It was a success in that our children were sufficiently entertained for us to feel like we were actually having a holiday, but the tent was hot and the facilities weren't convenient. We aim to bring you the best of both worlds; chatting peacefully outside the cottages while the kids maraud on site but with comfortable and convenient facilities on hand.

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: Please contact owner. Outside: On site we have two swimming pools to cater for the whole family. The larger pool is 11 x 7 m; for the babies and toddlers we have a 5 m diameter paddling pool. Both pools have ample decking surrounding them, allowing you to relax in the sun on one of the many sun loungers. To entertain the more active members of the family we have a basketball wall, which is also perfect to practice your tennis against. The adjacent open barns house two football tables, table tennis, pool table and a dartboard. In this area there is also a sand pit for the budding sandcastle builders. On the opposite side of the site is a play area with swings and a wine barrel now used as a climbing frame. For those looking for more sedate activities we have a selection of board games and puzzles, together with a library of paperbacks which guests are welcome to use - we only ask that you do not exchange books with any Jeffrey Archers please!
