About the Owner

Kate and Stephen have travelled extensively and lived in different countries in Asia. Their interests include cycling, walking, growing organic fruit and countryside conservation. Both delight in living in and learning from communities that provide a different experience, and are keen to support local enterprises. They feel that living on site enables them to provide a complete holiday experience for guests, through their knowledge of the area and local events. They live in the Villa grounds away from the apartments, and do their best to make guests feel at home, and to be a resource for advice and information, without being intrusive

Kate and Stephen love living so close to the mountains and consider themselves very lucky to have finally settled in such a lovely area.

our stay at villa maieletta

  • 5 of 5

We really loved staying with Kate and Stephen.

The appartement was really nice, inside it's rather small but very functional. The balcony is spectaculair! it's big, quiet and lovely to sit on. There are relaxing chairs, a dinner table and an olive tree hanging right over it.

The views we astonishing! a couple of big mountains and that's it.

Also a big plus on the property is the pool. Is a prefect way to cool down after a day of exploring the suroundings or you can also just stay in for a day and relax in the sun, enjoying the quietness.

Kate is a really nice lady who will do everything to make you're stay as comfortable as possible.

(one more tip: don't forget to try the fresh viges you can take right of the trees :) )

Marvellous Maiella backdrop

  • 5 of 5

Stephen and Kate were great hosts on hand with advice and suggestions of places to visit and help with looking at houses and locations as we are looking to buy a property in Abruzzo. The apartment was very clean and well equipped with everything needed for self catering. Very relaxing from breakfast on the balcony to watching the many fireflies flying around in the evenings. 5 minutes walk from a great restaurant and 10 minutes from the local supermarket both selling great local produce.

Abruzzo is an unspoilt area with very friendly people and stunning scenery. Thank you Kate and Stephen and Trina for a great stay

A great place to discover the Majella

  • 5 of 5

Close to Palombaro and near the Majella national park, you find Villa Maieletta situated halfway a valley. On one side you have a nice view over the valley and Palombaro at the top of the hill. On the other side you see the magnificent mountains of the Majella national park. This is still an authentic part of Italy without mass tourism, but with quiet old villages and a beautiful surroundings to hike and bike.

The Martellese apartment is a small very convenient and cosy apartment for two persons. The apartment is part of the lager villa but has its own entry and parking place. Everything in the apartment (kitchen, linen, etc.) is of good to high quality. The three balconies and the garden around the house will give you always a nice spot to have your breakfast, read a book or simple doze a bit.

The owners of the house really made an effort to make our stay special. First there was a great welcome surprise and then they took us to the yearly community party (festa) and introduced us there. Throughout the week they took care of our well being, helping us with suggestions for visits and hikes, sharing their home grown tomatoes etc.

If you want you can walk right from the house trough the valley to Palombaro (steep hill upwards). By car you can go to the numerous nice spots of the Majella park and hike there.

In summary: The owners care, the cosy apartment and the beautiful authentic scene make this a favourite and wholeheartedly recommended place to stay.

Owner's Response: We were delighted to have Wim and Henny as our first Dutch guests, but we hope not the last! They are great ambassadors for their country, who've inspired us to go back to visit the Netherlands for the first time in 30 years! You can go to a nearby festa just about every night between July and September, it's a lovely taste of traditional and modern Italy all rolled into one. Thanks, Wim and Henny; we enjoyed your company very much :) Kate and Stephen.

Our Honeymoon

  • 5 of 5

As the title suggests, we stayed here for our honeymoon and we can honestly say it was the perfect break!

A week surrounded by rural Italy, within easy reach of the stunning coast and the dominating mountains, this apartment and setting was incredible. The area had everything you could ask for, history, scenery, authentic charm, warm and friendly locals and topped off with perfect hosts. The villa contained all the utilities you would expect and furnished with some of the most beautiful items we have seem.

We cant recommend this collection of villas highly enough (see other accommodation available). There are activities to take part in, the use of the billiard room, internet and films. The nearby Agrourismo provides good food and swimming facilities.

Thanks to their passion, Stephen and Kate's knowledge and understanding of the area provides you with all you need to know to explore without having to do weeks of research if, like us, you arrive unprepared.

Memories that will last our lifetimes as well as making some life long friends before we left, we are already planning our return, this time with our three children.

No higher recommendation can be made other than to say if you visit this area and choose to stay elsewhere you will not get the same quality holiday we had.

Our biggest thanks to Stephen and Kate. You made our honeymoon perfect! We know all who book to stay will share our love for the area and you.

Attention to detail

  • 5 of 5

From the very start, even before arriving, Kate and Stephen answered our queries and questions thoughtfully, and carefully

We arrived very late due to flight issues, and even at 1am they both greeted us, made us feel very welcome, and at no time did they even hint that it was a little late! Or early!

The apartment is beautifully positioned, and as you would expect every detail thought through, a bottle of Proseco, Bread, Coffee and Tea, the right pillows, the right bed etc

The area is stunning, great walks, beautiful villages, and with lots of local festivals. Kate and Steven are only to happy to recommend and provide guidance

The final feedback I have demonstrates Kate and Stevens desire and enthusiasm to get it right. We sat down for just a short time and they asked a few non intrusive questions on our stay, they wanted to improve, hard to see how!

Thanks again!

Owner's Response: Thank you very much, too, Tina and Kevin. You’re right that we do as much as we can to make the Villa better each time a guest tells us about their stay. We’re also keen to tell people looking for a special kind of holiday about some of the unique things we can offer, and are delighted that we can now accommodate parties of wedding guests of up to 8 people. For larger wedding groups we team up with our colleagues at the agroturismo and restaurant mentioned by Karen and Tony in their review, offering a combined accommodation and meals package for up to 26 people.

Hospitality and kindness

  • 5 of 5

I did not know the hinterland but only the Abruzzo coast. At Villa Maieletta I found a peaceful, friendly, hospitable, with ample freedom of movement but also pleasant moments of sharing. The apartment that I occupied (as well as others, that the hosts have made me visit) it appeared very comfortable and exquisitely furnished, with furniture of great taste and oriental fabrics that gave a warm touch to the environment. Around the villa, immersed in silence, hills planted with olive trees and rustic farmhouses. And in the distance, a hill higher than the others with the country's Palombaro and behind the Maiella, majestic mountains. Fantastic. Guests have access to a common room with TV, PC, a selection of CDs for all ages, billiards, posters and advice of the hosts on how to spend beautiful days and nights in the more or less close. The hosts were really friendly and nice and they know how to receive. In conclusion: beautiful and comfortable villa, with beautiful villages to visit, pleasant silence and helpfulness and kindness. Thanks Kate and Stephen, see you soon. Cat

Owner's Response: It was a great pleasure to have Cat with us. She came for a study holiday, and to make the most of the opportunity for immersion in the English language that we are able to offer. We spent much happy time outside the formal study environment chatting and learning about Italian life, culture and how it compares with other places that we know. For learners of English we offer a combined package of luxury accommodation plus tuition, with optional trips out during the day. Cat treated us to her delicious home-made lemon cake while she was here, made with the best ingredients form Maria’s local shop. We’ve already placed our order for her next visit!

From the Owner

Time stands almost still in Limiti, a rural place where the pattern, sights and sounds of life are as they would have been decades ago. Some of the people have changed, many of the families have not, and we are very lucky to have great people living nearby and to be part of a community that embraces our guests as positively as it has embraced us. The views we enjoy are stunning, together with the peaceful surrounding environment, where a mere tractor passing by is an event to arouse curiousity. The Villa is tucked away in a quiet corner of Abruzzo and is just right, a little bubble of tranquility without being either remote or isolated. The road to the Villa is tarmac all the way, important to make the journey easy for us, and for our guests.

Local places of interest include:

Lakes Casoli and Bomba (each about 10 km)

The town of Chieti, built on the site of a pre-Roman settlement, whose remains can still be viewed today (20 km)

Guardiagrele, which boasts superb panoramic views, along with fascinating historic sites, arts, culture and up-market shops

Roccascalegna Castle (10 km)

Lanciano, which features stunning architecture such as the Basilica of Santa Maria del Ponte (25 km)

Further Details:

The south-facing Villa has spectacular views of Palombaro, 536 metres above sea level, at the foot of the 2,252 metre Martellese Mountain, one of the highest in the Maiella range, where the 2011 film, “Lords of London,” featuring Ray Winstone, was filmed. Rolling hills lead towards Lake Casoli.

Wildlife surrounds you; wild boar, eagles, kites, falcons, roe deer and mink are often in the area, with Apennine wolves in the mountains. Listen to the Scops Owl calling its mate across the fields on summer evenings, or watch the fireflies as they make the beautiful clear night sky twinkle in May & June.Wildflowers, such as orchids, that would be the envy of Interflora adorn the hillsides in April.

People are wonderfully warm and friendly, with an openness and honesty that is seldom found among the urban sophistication of more developed places.

Summertime is festival season, and in August there's an event on nearby almost every night. There's plenty of choice, with a wild boar (cingiale) festa that lasts 3 weeks, a hot chilli pepper event, cheese and chocolate festas. The Fiat 500 car rally is in June, and July has the Val Serviera mountain-top walk and Pescara International Jazz Festival, which attracts famous artists from around the globe. Lanciano's Medieval Festa takes place in early September, and the Casoli Festival of Patron Saints is at the beginning of October.

Our local Sant'Antonio festa on the first weekend in August brings the young and old together, with traditional and modern music, plus dancing. The local road is closed off for another great night out, the Di Vitis Festa Della Birra (beer festival) in mid-August. The De Vitis family-run general store, 1 km away, is the hub of the area, and a hive of activity that's run by the amazing Maria; it includes a bar, hardware store and petrol pumps. Maria, a celiac sufferer, has made sure that the store stocks a great range of celiac foods. An "agroturismo" restaurant, which serves food produced almost entirely on its own land, is only 3 minutes walk from the Villa.
