We are a British/American couple with family and friends in both countries. We chose the Townhouse in Velez-Malaga to be our European home and a base for family and friends to visit. We have lived in our Velez-Malaga Townhouse 10 times for about 3 weeks each time since buying it in early March 2011 and each visit is more enjoyable than the previous one.
Patrick Buckley purchased this villa in 2011
We chose Axarquia because it has the best weather in Europe, great beaches, is 40 minutes to Malaga Airport and 1 hour 45 mins to the Sierra Nevada Ski Resort. After looking from beaches to mountains and campo to villages we decided on Velez-Malaga to experience living in a typical Andalucian village neighbourhood with all the amenities of a small city within walking distance - market, restaurants, tapas cafes, bus service and a sports center with a lap pool. We chose the "Old City" (La Villa) up near the Moorish Fortaleza for the ambiance. We chose the house because it has a large 90sqm roof terrace with 360 degree views of the sea, mountains, sunset and cultural landmarks, plus modern amenities and 3 bedrooms and 2 baths making room for visitors.
The roof terrace has superb views that are ideal for enjoying the Costa del Sol weather. It is half covered so one can elect full sun or shade or even sit out and remain dry and warm while listening to the patter of raindrops on the half roof. BBQ dinners on the roof offer superb sunset views and aerial displays by the neighbouring swifts. The beaches are 3 miles/5 km/10 min drive or one can take the bus. Lake Vinuela. the mountains and national park are about a 15 min drive. All the Velez-Malaga amenities are within about a 15 min walk. The house was well built on a historic foundation and fitted out with modern appliances and amenities. It is a fun place to live.
I can unreservedly recommend this for those who want to rediscover the “old” Spain. Steve Apr 14 .Fulfilled desire to experience the real Spain-DarenJul13. Many hours soaking up the sun & superb views from roof terrace and enjoying the sunset over the mountains whilst cooking on the BBQ with a glass of local wine-Sue&Chris May13. Really enjoyed your lovely home. Comfortable, clean, well equipped. Holy Week Museum at top of hill is must see! Will recommend to our family and friends. Hope to rent again for future visits-EnidApr13. Enjoyed our stay. Beyond well equipped. Attention to detail outstanding. Maps and literature very helpful! Velez is beautiful and much nicer than a resort. Busses to the beach and all the local villages from Nerja to Malaga. Local people very friendly and helpful-Sara&LeeAug12. In heart of historic town, short walk to cafes, shops, Close to Lake Vinuela. Loved roof terrace views and serenades by neighbourhood flamenco guitar player-Bill&NormaMar12.
What a privilege to spend two weeks in real Spain. The villa was a comfortable place to relax and as a base to be immersed in Velez-Malaga. The owners have ensured that it is fully equipped and functional, with modern conveniences to make it comfortable and care-free. The living quarters are tastefully furnished, bedrooms spacious and kitchen well-stocked, The thorough pre-arrival information about the villa, town and region was supremely accurate and placards posted in the villa had useful tips – this attention to detail was most appreciated.
As the owners and other guests have pointed out, the large rooftop terrace is the best feature. From the outstanding views of mountains and the Mediterranean to seeing the town’s spires and neighborhoods, we spent many hours “up there.” Each spectacular sunset capped another fine day in Andalucía. The sights and sounds from the street offered a peek into Spanish life. At times we would peer over to see a guitarist strolling along, school children returning home, a vigorous game of some sort being played on a table that materialized on the cobblestones, and just life in general.
There are many streets to explore in Velez-Malaga and during our second week we regularly walked through different neighborhoods, and even to Torre del Mar. There is no shortage of cafes, restaurants, cultural sites and shops to visit.
We were impressed and moved by witnessing the many “Semana Santa” processions during Holy Week. Every evening the various Catholic churches and brotherhoods sponsored elaborate floats that moved slowly through the hilly and narrow streets, each carried on the shoulders of 150 parishioners. Bands and solemnly attired women, men and children marched in piety along with the floats, usually for up to six hours! All processions, sometimes six a night, went through Plaza de la Constitucion, a very short walk from the villa.
If you fly into Malaga as we did (after being in northern Germany) you may wish to consider hiring Geoff from the Spanish Management firm to transport you to the villa, particularly if you are a first-time visitor. Not only does he know the best route to make luggage transit easier, he is intimately familiar with the region despite being a U.K transplant. Once in the villa he provided a thorough briefing so we felt right at home.
We definitely plan to return at some point and stay even longer. Our gratitude to owners Pat and Marilyn for opening their lovely villa for us. Saludos!
Lovely house lots of room, very well equipped with every thing you need for your stay. Very clean and tidy nice welcome pack. Nice meet and greet with Kira. Great feeling with the house in the pedestrianised part of the old town, with very friendly local people. Found some great places to eat and drink, would recommend this house.
“We had a wonderful time in Velez - this was our second visit and the house is still great with an outstanding roof terrace. The swifts had arrived so we sat on the roof terrace early evening drinking wine and watching the birds dance and dive around the tower - magical.
We love Velez – for being very Spanish with few tourists and for having good public transport which makes a car unnecessary. We had returned to Velez to see the Easter parades – and these were amazing and definitely worth seeing.
The house is really well equipped. The handle in the bathroom to help climb out of the bath/shower was great (we were convinced this was new}. Thanks to Kira who was really welcoming and fitted in with our plans.”
We have stayed in the apartment on three occasions.
We particularly appreciate the facilities that are available in Velez Malaga, most within a short walking distance from the apartment, restaurants, bars, butchers, bakery (24 hour) supermarkets, swimming pool.
The walk from central Velez to the apartment offers, what we believe to be an authentic Spanish feel, through winding cobbled streets. A large proportion of the people that live here are Spanish. It genuinely feels that you are immersing yourself in a part of Spanish society. We have stayed in a number of other locations in and around the immediate coastline and none compare to delights that surround this part of Velez. We enjoy the area so much that, one day, we would love to live here.
The apartment itself is modern and very functional. We very much enjoy the sunsets over the valley. We suspect that the owners must stay here fairly regularly as it very much feels like a home. There always seems to be various supplies left in the cupboard. Assuming that this must be on an honesty basis. Very much appreciated when arriving after a flight.
We very much recommend this apartment.
The house has been refitted to a very high standard. We enjoyed the house, the immediate area and the town itself. We did not travel as far as we had planned out of Velez because we enjoyed being in the town. . Staying amongst the locals was great. When you hear someone play flamenco guitar on the street corner you know its the real deal, not something for the tourists.
If you are up fro travelling, varied countryside (from coast to mountains) is all well within 0.5 -1 hour drive time. We will definitely return to this house.
