Property

Updated: 06-Nov-2016
Villa in Hourtin, Medoc, Gironde, Aquitaine / Dordogne, France - Perfectly Located Close To Village, Central To Lake, Beaches And Vineyards

The property is modern, recently finished, comfortably furnished. Light and airy the open plan layout is perfectly suited to a relaxed holiday with family and friends. A large patio with shaded pergola provides a lovely outdoor eating area. The living room and two of the three bedrooms open directly on to the patio adding to the spacious feel of the house, ideal for early morning coffee and for keeping an eye on the little ones. The fitted kitchen is fully equipped for all your cooking needs and a dishwasher makes the clean up easier too. Built on the flat and tiled throughout the house is very accessible for those with mobility difficulties. The village itself has all the necessary amenities and a colourful market 3 times a week in summer, situated close the lake with lots of family orientated activities. A short distance from the renowned Atlantic surfing beaches, its position in the Medoc region famous for its fine wines means the chateaux and vineyards are also nearby.

Could also be suitable for two families.

Google maps does not give the exact position of the house, this link though dated and giving the incorrect house number may be helpful in defining the it's placement on the street.

Fantastic property and garden

  • 5 of 5

This is a truly wonderful property. My husband and I drove from Calais and arrived to an immaculate house with a bottle of wine and chocolates provided to give us a wonderful start to our holiday. The property is really spacious and is really well equipped. We loved the patio area, in particular the bbq which we used most nights.

Hourtin village is close by and there are markets there a few times during the week and you can have oysters for breakfast or bring them home to have later in the day if you so desire. There is a really good wine shop in the village also. On our first Sunday evening, there was an event on the green in the village. . . . live music and lots of local foods on sale. We loved the escargots and the huitres!

Hourtin port is close by, but not within walking distance. You would need to cycle, which we did, or drive. We went to the firework display on Bastille night. There was also live music that night. We also went to the port to watch a young girl band called Chicco Boom who were truly fantastic. The visit would not have been complete without moules and frites at the port.

Bordeaux is an hour's drive and definitely worth a visit.

All in all a great holiday. Thank you to the owner and to the people who look after the property.

Villa at Hourtin

  • 4 of 5

The house is very well equipped, clean, spacious and modern.

You have the lake 'Lac d'Hourtin' at 10 minutes cycling and the ocean at 15 min driving. On both locations, there are many sportactivities.

Going east, you have the wonderful vineyards of the Médoc.

Hourtin is a sympathic village, not too big. Hourtin Plage is not at all crowded and yet you find all you need: restaurant, surfing schools and shops.

Perfect Holiday and Perfect House

  • 5 of 5

I stayed in this house in Hourtin for ten days last June with my wife and another couple.

Everything about the trip was perfect, from making arrangements with the owners, to the house itself, to the weather. We were travelling from Dublin and flew to Bordeaux where we collected our car. Hourtin is just under an hour away from Bordeaux. All the roads are good and easy to navigate.

The house is located about a five minute walk from Hourtin village. I usually started the day by walking to the village for fresh bread and croissants from the bakery. The afternoons we spent either at the lake or the beach. Other days we explored the impressive vineyards and chateaus in the Medoc and visited Bordeaux where my wife managed to drag me to an opera!

The house itself is large, airy and spacious with three big bedrooms. The kitchen area is beautiful and everything you need there. My favourite feature is the large stone BBQ on the terrace which we got plenty of use out of during our stay!

I'd highly recommend a stay here and will definitely be returning in the future.

Fun for all the family

  • 5 of 5

The house is lovely, very comfortable, clean and spacious, a real home away from home with everything you could possibly need for a short or long stay, from washing machine and tumble dryer to dish washer and hair drier. Many rooms open onto the patio area where we enjoyed sitting out in the evening with a glass of wine, cooking on the built-in barbeque and watching the kids play on the swingset, or indeed breakfasting out there on freshly baked crusty bread and fresh produce from the local market. There is lots to do in the area for kids of all ages, ours really enjoyed surfing lessons at the spectacular beach, as well as paddling and canoeing at the lake. There are many more activities & water sports in the area which are fully detailed in the information pack provided by the owners. We found this very useful as it also lists & describes places to eat both in the local village and at the lakes . One of the highlights of our stay was a drive around the many famous Chateaux in the area and a trip to a local vineyard where we sampled some of the wares.

We really had a fantastic holiday and would definitely recommend this property to families with children.

Ideal family base

  • 5 of 5

Lovely place with plenty of room. Nice private veranda with built in bbq. Owner was easy to contact and helpful. Nicely located for the town close by with its lake. The lake has a beach and suitable for swimming. Nice alternative to sea on windy days or just forf change. Lake also has nice resturant for meals. We visited fort at Blaye and the Dunes at Pyla sur Mer would strongly recommend both. Its quiet so not for clubbers! but if you want a relaxing comfortable place to stay would recommend this place

Belle maison en général

  • 4 of 5

Location

Activity and Interests

Car: recommended

Coast/Beach:

Our holiday home is approximately 3km from Hourtin Port which has very family orientated lake activities including 'L'Ile Aux Enfants' the childrens island for plenty of outdoor fun. Our nearest beach is Hourtin Plage approx 11km a laid back resort with lots of surfing. Further afield but still within a short driving distance, the lake resorts of Maubuisson (20km) and Lacanau / Moutchic (25km). More beach resorts are Carcans Plage (25km) and Lacanau-Ocean (35km).

Travel:

Bordeaux-Merignac (approx 1 hour drive) is the nearest airport, serviced by Aerlingus, Ryanair, EasyJet, Air France and BA.

La Rochelle Airport (approx 2 1/2 hours incl. ferry) and Bergerac Airport (approx 2 1/2hrs) provide cheap options but greater travel time.

Of course the car ferry is also popular (and practical for bringing bikes etc). St Malo being the closest port at approx 6 1/2 hours drive. Car hire is recommended.

Distances:

Hourtin village itself is approx a 500 meter walk from the house. Hourtin Port 3km. Lesparre 16km. Pauillac 25km. Margaux 45km. Bordeaux 60km. Cap-Ferret 70km. Dune Du Pyla 95km. Arcachon 100km.

Further Details:

Hourtin Village can fulfill all your requirements: shops, pharmacy, wine cellars, restaurants, bars, market, post office, bank, hair dressers, beauticians. A 7 day mini-market. For bigger supermarkets Lesparre has a Leclerc and a Carrefour, a bit further afield St-Medard En Jalles.

Hourtin-Port has a good selection of restaurants in the summer from seafood to pizzas. Hourtin Plage has both restaurants and some shops for clothes, accessories, buckets and spades etc.

Maubuisson is a lot more commercial and Lacanau-Ocean even more so.
