The area is truly an unspoilt gem in the heartlands of Portugal, you can still drive for 15 minutes along the coast and find yourself a completely deserted stretch of beach or stroll through the many medieval and charming villages that abound. Everywhere you go you will find the people friendly and helpful. The Castled town of Obidos is still contained within its original city walls and is described by many of the travel guides as one of the most picturesque medieval towns in Europe.
We (family of 4) stayed at this apartment in late July / early August. It is spacious, and really shows that the owners are using it as a holiday home themselves – good beds and mattresses, well equipped kitchen, Wi-Fi, attention given to detail. Every room has access to a balcony, and the apartment is facing N/E, so it doesn’t get too hot. Praia del Rey has its own microclimate, and seems to be a few degrees cooler than other places, so sleeping was never a problem. The pool is shared with other apartments, but was never too full. The apartment is situated within a Golf Club which is very well maintained. We needed a hand shortly after arrival, and the manager came quickly and sorted things efficiently.
The location is great – a car is absolutely necessary, but this will allow day trips. We went to Obidos, Peniche (which was also our favourite beach), Nazare, Sintra and Coimbra. Plenty of culture to be mixed in with beach life. The sea is great for surfing and wave-jumping, but currents and waves are too strong in most places for swimming.
All of us would go back in a flash!
