About this property

Spacious family-friendly stone house with fabulous views, large grounds and pool

Our house is in the heart of rural Spain, 3kms from the village of Guisando on the southern slopes of the Gredos mountains. The house, which is in the protected environment of the Sierra de Gredos Regional Park, was built in 2010 on the site of an old farm. The house is on two floors. The ground floor has a large open plan living area, with well-equipped kitchen, dining room table to seat 12/14, and living area with comfortable sofas and a wood-burning stove. There is also a cloakroom. From the living room, French windows open onto a covered balcony with table and chairs. From the balcony you can see up to 30 miles away towards Toledo and the valley of the River Tagus. The ground floor also has four bedrooms and two bathrooms linked to the living area by a covered verandah. Each pair of bedrooms, one with double bed and one with twin beds, share a bathroom, making the property ideal for families sharing. On the lower ground floor, there are two additional bedrooms, one with double bed, child bed and en suite bathroom and the other with two single beds and adjacent bathroom. All the bedrooms open onto the secluded walled garden and sun terrace. The garden is gated and is therefore very safe for small children.
The property is set in 15 acres of orchards and pine woods. The fruit trees, mainly cherries, but also apples, pears, peaches and figs produce abundant fruit which guests are welcome to pick. Our manager, Juan, will bring you eggs from our chickens and seasonal vegetables from the garden.
The 10m X 5m pool, which is securely fenced, is about 30m from the house, and is visible from the balcony. The pool is not heated but the average summer temperature of the water is between 24-28 degrees in summer. Within walking distance of the house there are also natural pools for swimming in the local rivers.
The area is very rural and completely unspoilt. There are wonderful wild flowers, butterflies and unusual birds.
In the village, there are a number of local bars offering simple but well-cooked with a wider variety of restaurants in the local town about 8km away.

Fabulous seclusion!
We had a great holiday. The house was lovely and homely, the grounds and views were amazing. We were two families of four and there was plenty of space everywhere for us all. It was so peaceful (until our children started running around causing chaos!). Juan was excellent - he took the children to collect the eggs on the first day and meet the animals (which was then a feature of each day following!), was incredibly helpful when we had any queries, were planning little walking trips or going out on bikes etc. - he really helped enhance our holiday experience. The pool, table tennis, badminton and golf facilities meant there was plenty of outdoor fun to keep us all entertained. The bikes were great for a trip into Guisando. Picking and eating cherries straight from the trees was a big highlight of my trip! The surrounding area was beautiful for little walks through the pine forests in the mountains. All in all we had a brilliant time, loved the house and the surrounding area and were sad to be leaving!

Alles is even mooi en goed verzorgd.

About the host

As a family, we have always loved Spain, but preferred the peace and stunning scenery of the interior to the more built-up coastline. One of our daughters studied in Salamanca and it was whilst visiting her, that the idea of owning our own house in Spain first took shape.

Why they chose this property

We started looking for a house in rural Spain about twenty years ago. Eventually, we found a ruined farmhouse and farm buildings near Guisando in the Sierra de Gredos Regional Park. Building in the park is very tightly controlled and it took us several years to obtain planning permission to rebuild. The house is situated at about 900 metres above sea level on the southern slope of the mountains. The road to the farm is concreted, but as it ends just beyond us, there is very little traffic. The peace and tranquillity are amazing, and the views up to the peaks, which are snow-capped between December and May as well as down across the valleys of the rivers Tietar and Tagus, make it an unforgettable place to stay.

What makes this property unique

We are working hard to make both the house and farm as green and self-sufficient as possible. Electricity comes from solar panels, although we do have a back-up generator which will come on automatically on a cloudy day, and water is pumped from our own well.
We have a small flock of sheep to help keep the grass down, and Juan, our manager, tends a vegetable garden and provides seasonal vegetables for the guests. He also brings up bread for breakfast from the village each day. Bread and vegetable scraps are then fed to the hens who produce masses of eggs for the guests to eat.
