Detached Thatched Cottage In The Village Of Carisbrooke

Updated: 21-Oct-2016
Cottage in Carisbrooke, Isle of Wight - Set in the conservation area of Carisbrooke Castle 2 Mins Walk To Village Pubs

Set in a superbly quiet position in the peaceful village near Newport with views up to Carisbrooke Castle. At the rear of the cottage there is a brook where you can watch the kingfisher catching his breakfast. There is a small level patio running along the width of the cottage along side the brook, overlooking the old mill. The brook is fenced off and gated therefore safe for young children. The front garden is laid to lawn & flower beds where there is a patio with a table & chairs. There is parking for 2 cars at the front of the cottage, with additional parking a short distance further up the lane. There are numerous bridleways & footpaths through to the countryside, directly from the cottage & of course Carisbrooke Castle is only a short walk away. In the summer months special activities are arranged for children. There is a village shop (Co-op), Italian restaurant, 2 pubs and an Indian take away. They are a short walk over the Forde There is also a Post office where you can buy your newspaper. Outside the Cop-op is the bus stop with a bus service into the Principle town of Newport for all the main shops. IOW is a network of small country lanes & nowhere is very far, including the beaches - it just takes a little longer!

We have compiled an information pack, giving ideas of where to go and eat.

A lovely cottage, well equipped with a good layout. Cresswell Cottage is centrally situated on the Island so easy to travel to all attractions.

Beautiful charming cottage

  • 4 of 5

Cresswell cottage is a beautiful & quirky. It had everything we needed especially in the kitchen which not all holiday cottages do. Quirky layout with the two staircases but our 2 children found it fascinating & great for hide and seek! Excellent location on the island being in the middle so ideal for exploring all over. The cottage is just a small walk away from Carrisbrooke Castle which was a lovely day out.

Beautiful cottage

  • 5 of 5

I have to say that the website doesn't do Cresswell justice. It's a beautiful period cottage in an idyllic location with a brook running behind it. It's very comfortable and well equipped. The owners and Alison (the lady who looks after the cottage) are very helpful and nothing is too much trouble. We had a lovely week and would highly recommend the property.

Fabulous Accomodation

  • 5 of 5

Cresswell Cottage is a beautiful cottage set within site of Carrisbrooke Castle. It is fantastically equipped with everything you would need for a stress free holiday. The Gardens are beautifully maintained and the brook that runs alongside is very calming.

I could not recommend this Cottage highly enough and would give it 5 stars, more if able

Cresswell Cottage

  • 4 of 5

A lovely cottage, supplied with everything you could want for a relaxing stay, and an ideal situation for exploring the island.

The stairs are rather steep, but as there is a downstairs en suite bedroom, this shouldn`t really be cause for concern.

My children loved the steam and ford and there is a very nice pub in the village which serves good food.

All in all a fab place to stay...... would love to come back for a third time next year.

The perfect cottage

  • 5 of 5

Whilst the photos and information are 100% accurate, they don't do justice to this delightful property. It far exceeded our expectations.

On arrival the cottage was immaculately presented. The charming manager welcomed us and was easy to contact throughout our stay. A faulty dishwasher was replaced in record time with a brand new one.

Our party consisted of six adults and a toddler (three generations) and the space was ideal for us - we never felt cramped. The kitchen is extremely well equipped and the utility/laundry area is easy to use. All appliances are of high quality. The dining table had ample room for us all and we had lots of leisurely meals there. The spacious sitting room has comfortable seating and is well furnished. Each bedroom is different; the pretty bed linen was immaculate and the decoration throughout matched the cottage perfectly.

The cottage is quirky - the two sets of stairs are steep and the two upstairs bathrooms are cleverly tucked into the eaves, but we felt everything was perfectly safe for pensioners and toddlers (stair-gate and hand rails/ropes in place). The downstairs bedroom and bathroom made the accommodation very flexible.

The garden is small but perfectly formed and the outside sitting areas well stocked with table and chairs; there are even additional deckchairs in the utility room! The decked walkway along the rear, by the mill-stream with its watercress, is magical for children (and again, perfectly secure and safe).

The cottage is home to more games and wet-weather activities than you could ever need. Island guides, local history books, maps and brochures are well presented, informative and extensive.

The location of the cottage, both within the village and on the island is unbeatable. Playing pooh sticks in the ford was one of the highlights of our stay! Being able to walk up to Carisbrooke Castle was another bonus. We liked being able to walk to the well-stocked local Co-op for our shopping (they have the most friendly and helpful staff).

Carisbrooke is well served by buses (the two Festival goers found their journey very easy) and because it is so central it is simple to radiate out to every part of the island. We visited a different beach each day and did some lovely walks too.

As you can see we fell in love with Cresswell Cottage and you won't be surprised to hear we immediately re-booked for next year. What greater praise is there? For us it was perfect.

Activity and Interests

Car: recommended

Special interest holidays:

We have compiled an information file which gives some of the activities on the Island. We are unable to cover them all. There are many activities during the school holidays & many things to do with the children. One of our favorite places for the grandchildren is Robin Hill Adventure Park & Gardens, only a few minutes in the car from us. When you pay you are given a 7 day pass that gives you access without further charge. It is a fabulous place for taking a picnic, but there is also a cafe. A Falconry with 2/3 shows every day & many more activities for younger children. We consider this is very good value for money.

The Donkey santuary, Blackgang Chine, Alum Bay with the multi coloured sands & the cable car down to the beach are just a few to mention.

Beaches- A tip for spending time on the many beaches & rock pools, is to pick up a Tide chart. The Isle of Wight is the only place in the world that has a double tide. These tide charts can be picked up at newsagent or online.

You are never very far from the seaside & a sandy beach. Carisbrooke is well located for touring around the island. A bus from the village, will take you into the principle town of Newport with all the major shops & access to the 'round the island' buses.

Sandown & Shanklin are well known for beaches & beach shops whereas

Freshwater is a quieter area for beaches and the low tide reveals numerous rock pools.

Don't forget to pick up a tide chart for the best times to visit the beaches. Available also on internet

The cottage is about 20 mins drive from both Red Funnel (Southampton/Cowes) and Wightlink (Portsmouth/Fishbourne) ferry terminals. The Lymington/Yarmouth Wightlink ferry terminal is about 25 minutes drive.

Further Details:

As Newport is the Principle town, it is home to the larger shops like M & S, BHS, Sainsburys, Boots etc., In the event of an emergency which we hope is not the case for our guests, Newport is also home to our Hospital - St Marys.

OUr information pack give details of Pubs and Restaurants that we have used, but there are MANY we have not tried!

The brook that runs along the back of the cottage has shallow waters that run crystal clear - so clean that it attracts kingfishers and watercress grows naturally.
