About the Owner

Being an artist and writer, I am lucky enough to be able to choose where to live, and for the past twenty years or so I have lived in the hills behind Tavira. I bought this charming little townhouse and renovating it has been one of the most creative projects of my life. I intend to enjoy staying in it myself and am very happy that other people should enjoy staying in it too.

We have had a most wonderful holiday in Tavira. Thoroughly enjoyed this eclectic old Portuguese townhouse. Stavri and family, Seville, Spain

We love the house, it is comfortable, convenient and just perfect. It is cool in the evenings, you can sunbathe on the terrace, visit the market and cook the local produce, what more could you want?! We will recommend to others and hope to come back to stay. Julia and Mel, Somerset, England

We've been coming to tavira for many years, this was our first time as a family (with baby daughter and grandma). Such a great place, spacious, lovely in every smallest detail, comfortable. A wonderful combination of walking distance-to-everything and quiet place. Veronika and family, Germany

We came here last year and had such a lovely time we had to come back! The house is beautiful and so easy to live in - like home from home. Jo and Kosta

Lovely house in a lovely town

  • 5 of 5

We loved our 10 day stay in this very comfortable and attractive house - everything you need and a great terrace for the evenings. Jane gave us a very warm welcome and was really easy to get hold of when we had questions. Tavira is an elegant and charming wee town with lots of pretty walks, great places to eat and fantastic beaches close by. We didn't explore the area much this visit but it all looks gorgeous so we'll be back soon. Thank you very much Jane, it was a fantastic holiday.

Excellent Holiday

  • 5 of 5

Staying in Tavira for the first time, saw this fun looking, quirky Portuguese townhouse on the website. We were not disappointed! Had the most wonderful stay here. Jane was a joy to deal with throughout, meeting us on arrival at the house to coincide with our flight timings, leaving a welcome bottle of wine too!

The house is extremely central to everything in Tavira, from train and bus station to supermarket, shops, restaurants, bars and town square all within 5 mins walk, even the Roman Bridge the picturesque heart of the town.

The house has everything for a holiday stay, comfy beds, good strong showers, English speaking TV channels, even a dishwasher and washing machine for those who might require them! The added bonus, a rooftop terrace catching the evening sun for a relaxing glass of wine.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the beaches, although across the water were superb. The town is very attractive and we made trips to other nearby villages quite easily using either the train or local buses as we wished to explore the area as much as possible.

Would recommend this lovely holiday home and hope to return in the near future. Many thanks Jane.

Lovely house in great location

  • 4 of 5

We were delighted with the house, very comfortable & well equipped and the location could not have been better for exploring the town. The house is a short walk from the supermarket, train & bus stations, restaurants & the ferry to the Isle of Tavira. I'm sure we'll be back.

Lovely holiday

  • 5 of 5

Firstly Jane the owner was a pleasure to deal with and made the bookings and transactions very easy. We were met on arrival by Jane who showed us around and explained all we needed to know about the property.

This is a beautifully renovated house, retaining a lot of its original features.

We experienced quite hot temperatures whilst we were there but the recently installed air con in both bedrooms allowed a good nights sleep in very comfortable beds.

The house is positioned in a perfect location of this charming town, allowing easy access to restaurants, supermarket, train & bus station and the ferry stop which after a lovely 15 minute journey along the river arrives at the beautiful sandy beach with all the facilities you would require.

The town and river are less than a 5 minute steady stroll, here you will find plenty of restaurants and cafes which provide a wonderful relaxing atmosphere both day and night.

We would have no hesitation in recommending this property and look forward to returning in the future.

Just lovely

  • 4 of 5

My partner and I needed a few days break and we often use owners direct. When looking for a place in Portugal, we chose this lovely town house in Tavira. The house was built around 1905 and has been restored with all the modern requirements. It's in the perfect position that makes it easy access to all the sites and local transport. We were warmly welcomed by Jane the owner who also left us a welcome bottle of red wine (just delicious) and made us feel at home straight away.

Tavira has to be the cleanest town in Europe I have ever been to. The locals were all very friendly and the food was excellent and very competitively priced. I would definitely recommend this lovely house for anybody who is looking for a value for money, clean and perfectly positioned place to stay.

An excellent find

  • 5 of 5

This townhouse is lovely, it has been restored beautifully with all facilities needed, suited our young family, be aware there are three floors so you'll get fit during your stay. The location is just down the road from a supermarket and train station and the town centre . Only problem was very hot temperatures at night, maybe best to avoid August! Would definitely recommend.

Location

From the Owner

Tavira is just about the prettiest town I know. Walking along the river which runs through the middle of the town, with men wading for shellfish and seagulls screaming overhead, just lifts the heart. It is also a perfectly safe town - there is no problem with wandering alone through the streets at night - and in the summer the place is alive with street theatre, both natural and organised. The famous Tavira island with its beautiful beaches and lively bars and cafés is just a short ferry-hop away. There are no high-rise hotels in Tavira, and only a handful of discreet low-rise ones. Instead there is the elegance of traditional Portuguese townhouse architecture and the charm of rows of irregular cottages.

Activity and Interests

Car: not necessary

Coast/Beach:

From the centre of Tavira - a 5minute stroll away - water buses run in high season to the famous Tavira island, one of Europe's finest beaches with bars and restaurants. (Also a ferry all year round from the edge of town.) From the station (3 minutes' walk) trains run all along the Algarve to visit other coastal towns including Vila Real de Sto. António, from where you can catch a ferry across to Spain. This makes a very nice day out. You can also catch a bus to other towns and villages from the bus station (about 5 minutes' walk), including the water/beachside towns of Cabanas and Sta. Luzia.

Travel:

Nearest airport is Faro, forty five minutes drive away. There are several pick-up companies advertising on-line (some guests have recommended Yellowfish) or you can catch an airport bus or taxi to the centre of Faro and get a train to Tavira from there. It is easy to be car-free. But for those with cars, parking is easy. There are parking spaces all along the avenue (on the other side of the road) on meters and free street parking just 2 mins walk away through a church garden.

Further Details:

There are plenty of little local cafés along the Avenue, more 'Portuguese' in nature than those in the main tourist centre, and very good - and inexpensive - shops selling take-away lunches and dinners. Also an excellent bakery close by.

Facilities

From the Owner

My townhouse is ideally situated just a step away from the centre of town so that you can stroll down to the riverside in five minutes, and stroll back again if you've forgotten something - or just want to relax on your own sheltered roof terrace and look over the town instead of being at the bustling heart of things. The house is very airy, with double French doors leading from the sitting room to the balcony. The bedrooms (which have new, very quiet air conditioning) have French doors opening onto the atrium and these can be left open all the time in perfect security, as can the long windows of the bathrooms. The third floor studio, which has doors opening onto the atrium on one side and to the roof terrace on the other, is a pleasant small room to write or study in.
