About the property

Townhouse in Central Tavira, Eastern Algarve, Portugal - On The Edge Of Tavira's Centre, In A Jacaranda Tree-lined Avenue Ideal For A Car-free Holiday

Imaginatively and beautifully restored, charming old 3-storey townhouse with original tiled floors and panelled doors, close to the centre of this prettiest of Algarvian towns. The sheltered roof terrace has lovely views of the cathedral and castle and old Roman-tiled roof tops, and is an ideal spot for a pre-dinner aperitif. Ideal for those wishing to leave the car at home, as everything is within easy walking distance - railway station, bus station, castle, cathedral, riverside restaurants and bars, markets and supermarkets. Just a short stroll away from the summer's late-night entertainment - you can take it or leave it behind! There is a small double bedroom on both ground and first floor, both with air conditioning, each with a private shower room, and positioned at the back of the house overlooking the small, plant-filled atrium and away from street noises. About Jane

Being an artist and writer, I am lucky enough to be able to choose where to live, and for the past twenty years or so I have lived in the hills behind Tavira. I bought this charming little townhouse and renovating it has been one of the most creative projects of my life. I intend to enjoy staying in it myself and am very happy that other people should enjoy staying in it too.

Jane purchased this house in 2010

Why Jane chose Tavira

Tavira is just about the prettiest town I know. Walking along the river which runs through the middle of the town, with men wading for shellfish and seagulls screaming overhead, just lifts the heart. It is also a perfectly safe town - there is no problem with wandering alone through the streets at night - and in the summer the place is alive with street theatre, both natural and organised.

The famous Tavira island with its beautiful beaches and lively bars and cafés is just a short ferry-hop away. There are no high-rise hotels in Tavira, and only a handful of discreet low-rise ones. Instead there is the elegance of traditional Portuguese townhouse architecture and the charm of rows of irregular cottages.

What makes this house unique

My townhouse is ideally situated just a step away from the centre of town so that you can stroll down to the riverside in five minutes, and stroll back again if you've forgotten something - or just want to relax on your own sheltered roof terrace and look over the town instead of being at the bustling heart of things.

The house is very airy, with double French doors leading from the sitting room to the balcony. The bedrooms (which have new, very quiet air conditioning) have French doors opening onto the atrium and these can be left open all the time in perfect security, as can the long windows of the bathrooms.

The third floor studio, which has doors opening onto the atrium on one side and to the roof terrace on the other, is a pleasant small room to write or study in.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We have had a most wonderful holiday in Tavira. Thoroughly enjoyed this eclectic old Portuguese townhouse. Stavri and family, Seville, Spain

We love the house, it is comfortable, convenient and just perfect. It is cool in the evenings, you can sunbathe on the terrace, visit the market and cook the local produce, what more could you want?! We will recommend to others and hope to come back to stay. Julia and Mel, Somerset, England

We've been coming to tavira for many years, this was our first time as a family (with baby daughter and grandma). Such a great place, spacious, lovely in every smallest detail, comfortable. A wonderful combination of walking distance-to-everything and quiet place. Veronika and family, Germany

We came here last year and had such a lovely time we had to come back! The house is beautiful and so easy to live in - like home from home. Jo and Kosta

Homely, quaint, comfortable bolt hole with roof terrace within strolling distance of where it's at

  • 4 of 5

A great location. Just a few minutes walk from the lovely centre of Tavira and its numerous restaurants. Free parking nearby was easy to find. Despite being on busy street, we weren't troubled by noise once inside. Both bedrooms have a double bed, are ensuite and have aircon. We used the bedroom on the 2nd floor which had a comfortable memory foam mattress. Plenty of hot water. Shower was ok but didn't drain that well plus we were asked to put used loo paper in a bin rather than down the loo because of the primitive plumbing. Not wild about that...

Well-equipped kitchen with dishwasher.

Thoughtful homely touches like wall art, a wheeled shopping trolley, a bookshelf full of paperbacks and umbrellas (conventional and for the beach) made this place feel like somewhere you could live long term rather than just a holiday let.

Lovely Holiday

  • 4 of 5

Fabulous location, very quaint old property full of character.Comfortable bedrooms with good a/c units in both! A fully equipped kitchen. We experienced exceptionally high tempertures temperatures and unfortunately we were unable to use the lovely lounge due to stifling heat in the abscence of an a/c unit. We did however make use of the lovely roof terrace overlooking the roof tops!

Lots of lovely restaurants within close proximity of the house. The beach and the cooling breeze coming off the sea were wonderful.

We love Tavira and will definitely return!

First visit to Tavira

  • 5 of 5

This was our first visit to Tavira & I must say our holiday rental was excellent. It's location was second to none, being just a short stroll to the centre of Tavira, approx 300 metres I would guess. Also,we arrived by train & it was perhaps approx.400 metres from the train station, next to which is located a Lidl store. It is approx 400/500 metres from the bus station. The little house itself, which is probably fairly old,has been modernised internally & is very well equipped. We would have no hesitation in staying here again.

Tavira itself is small & easy enough to navigate around. It has plenty of bars, cafes & restaurants, all easily located around the general centre near the Roman Bridge. The weather was glorious during our 4 day stay. A week in Tavira without a car might be a bit long but a great place to visit for 4/5 days. During weekdays there is a fairly good bus services to surrounding towns & areas but not so good on Saturdays & Sundays when buses appeared fairly restricted. Trains pass through the station, going from East to West & West to East,on a fairly regular basis. I think there are about 9 on weekdays/Saturday & maybe 7 on Sundays. We would return to Tavira

Unusual and quirky townhouse

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for 6 weeks in this ideally positioned townhouse, with the train and bus stations being within a short walk, there is no need for a car. The bedrooms are very quiet and peaceful with the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in. We used both the roof terrace or balcony every evening to read and people watch ! Thank you Jane for a superb stay.

Lovely house in a lovely town

  • 5 of 5

We loved our 10 day stay in this very comfortable and attractive house - everything you need and a great terrace for the evenings. Jane gave us a very warm welcome and was really easy to get hold of when we had questions. Tavira is an elegant and charming wee town with lots of pretty walks, great places to eat and fantastic beaches close by. We didn't explore the area much this visit but it all looks gorgeous so we'll be back soon. Thank you very much Jane, it was a fantastic holiday.

Car: not necessary

From the centre of Tavira - a 5minute stroll away - water buses run in high season to the famous Tavira island, one of Europe's finest beaches with bars and restaurants. (Also a ferry all year round from the edge of town.) From the station (3 minutes' walk) trains run all along the Algarve to visit other coastal towns including Vila Real de Sto. António, from where you can catch a ferry across to Spain. This makes a very nice day out. You can also catch a bus to other towns and villages from the bus station (about 5 minutes' walk), including the water/beachside towns of Cabanas and Sta. Luzia.

Nearest airport is Faro, forty five minutes drive away. There are several pick-up companies advertising on-line (some guests have recommended Yellowfish) or you can catch an airport bus or taxi to the centre of Faro and get a train to Tavira from there. It is easy to be car-free. But for those with cars, parking is easy. There are parking spaces all along the avenue (on the other side of the road) on meters and free street parking just 2 mins walk away through a church garden.

Further Details:

There are plenty of little local cafés along the Avenue, more 'Portuguese' in nature than those in the main tourist centre, and very good - and inexpensive - shops selling take-away lunches and dinners. Also an excellent bakery close by.
