Guestbook comments from the owner

We have had a wonderful stay. The cottage is great - very well-equipped, lots of modern conveniences, but still with bags of charm! And we love the open coal fire! Adam and Liz, Leeds.

One of the nicest cottages we have stayed in and very well-equipped. The Pearson/Sharples families, Solihull, Warwickshire.

The cottage is an excellent base to discover the 'delights' of Swaledale. WE have enjoyed our four-day stay - a cottage and area to be recommended. Keith, Chris, Judy and Lyle, York and Cambridge.

A wonderful and very comfy cottage, brilliant for dogs. Amazing area with lovely walks and pubs. Sarah, Nick, Pippa and Hugh, and Ailsa the dog, Dorking, Surrey.

Lovely, well-thought and planned cottage. Well-equipped for a very peaceful stay. The Healey and Mandal families, Middleton, Manchester.

Characterful cottage

  • 5 of 5

What a great location for a weekend in the Dales. The cottage was so characterful with lots of traditional features - lovely fireplace, wooden floors, stable door - whilst being really comfy. We love the fact we could take our dog and there was room for her to dry off after our walks. Also impressed by being on the Tour de France route - we were able to cycle up Buttertubs - well I had to push!! Slightly disappointed that the pub was closed when we visited but there were clear signs of it being refurbished and due to re-open in the autumn. We stayed here as part of a group of friends - great for the walkers and cyclists amongst us while those who wanted to relax in the cottage had all the amenities they needed.

Lovely cottage in Yorkshire Dales

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this fabulous cottage for Le Grand Depart weekend this summer. It is SUCH a fantastic place. Comfy & cosy. Beds extremely comfortable. We were totally spoiled because it was actually the perfect location to watch the cyclists go by, but it's in a great location anyway ... for the hills- cycling, walking, strolling - and also for visiting other parts of the Dales - teashops, crafty shops & lots of interesting places to see (plenty of info in the cottage). We really couldn't fault this place and there were six highly satisfied adults staying there. There was plenty of room for us all. The local pub was closed when we visited but it's REOPENING soon, if it hasn't already, and it's OVER THE ROAD!! Everyone in the village was very friendly, especially the next door neighbour. For true Yorkshire charm in a perfect location you will not be disappointed.

Horrendous

  • 1 of 5

Dangerous paving to front and side entrances - covered in grease and grime, mainly from a blocked up drain. Had to clean paving and unblock drain. Very limited parking. Inside whole house needed to be mains lit as it was so dark, stepped and sloping floors between rooms with no visible warning. Actions to take in case of fire, not apparent. No central heating, only inadequate electric blow heaters found dumped under stairway cupboard, insufficient electric sockets sited in wrong places. General inadequate cleaning particularly within the kitchen area where most of the utensils had to be 'degreased' prior to use, including the utensil holder. High chair for infant had to be cleaned prior to use.

Storage heater in 2nd utility room not working, main window in lounge was screwed together preventing it being opened. Any fresh air was through the open outside door!!

Nothing much was to our satisfaction so we left the property and moved on elsewhere.

Was going to give zero rating but for the presence of Wi-Fi.

Would NOT recommend this cottage to anyone!

Owner's Response: Disappointing to receive a review so totally at odds with other reviews & positive comments in visitor book. Also a surprise as no issues raised with us. It is advertised with small parking space. Not advertised with central heating, it has electric storage heaters, electric heater in kitchen, open fire in lounge & extra oil radiator, convector heater & fan heater stored away for use if needed. Of course the cottage needs mains lighting, most houses do! We get the sun in the morning & we have sufficient lighting throughout to ensure that it is well lit the rest of the time. There are plenty of sockets in all rooms, in normal places - 8 in lounge! We are are confident that our cleaners maintain a clean environment in the cottage, particularly in the kitchen. We have high standards and regularly check these standards are met. The highchair shouldn't have needed washing, we apologise for this. Lounge window screwed shut for security as has been left open. Other windows do open. The paving is not dangerous, just standard paving, cleaned & swept regularly. We are sorry if a drain blocked, this can be caused by leaves or guests pouring oil/fat down the sink. Had it been reported to us, it would have been resolved. Utility room heater was working but switched off. It is a traditional Dales cottage, stone walls, low ceilings, gentle slope to the kitchen, step up to utility room (clearly visable!) these and other quirky features are what we & many of our guests love about the cottage and give it its character. We do not believe this review accurately reflects our cottage or the views of other guests, many of whom are regular visitors. At least the WiFi was appreciated!!

Greystones

A really nice cottage, well furnished with all requirements for self catering.

The one disadvantage was the intermittent internet access and a complete dead spot for mobile phones. Maybe adding a land line pay phone might help, but this does not detract from the ideal location for a quiet holiday.

Unfortunately, our stay was made more difficult because my wife broke her ankle and spent 3 days in Middlesborough in hospital, but the fact that there was a downstairs toilet meant that we could at least finish the holiday.

I would certainly go back and would recommend it to friends.
