About the Owner

We bought our then derelict farm in 2004, renovated the farmhouse and worked to bring the farm back to life growing organic olives and almonds; we have just had our fourth harvest. We came for the quality of life and a more natural "real", less materialistic and relaxed lifestyle; also let's not forget the attractions of siestas, fiestas and tapas! We have much work still on the farm and many plans, which we hope will keep us busy, fit and healthy.

We feel privileged to live here and so decided on B&B as kind friends said we were good hosts and we love to share this wonderful place with others. Kate is a natural host, her home cooked food is much praised and her breakfasts in particular very popular! In 2016, we look forward to welcoming guests for our sixth season.

Wow- If 'Carlsberg' did holidays...!! Over the years, we have stayed at numerous holiday lets / B & B, but nowhere can compete with Cortijo Ceniza. Phil & Kate have successfully created an oasis of calm to counter the demands of the frantic and demanding world we live in and you will undoubtedly feel relaxed from the moment you arrive. Imagine, fresh milk and flowers in your room every day. Towels changed every day. Fully stocked mini bar. The guest room is immaculate and benefits from a lovely balcony with the most incredible views of the national park and mountains. We will cherish the memories of watching the sunrise each morning whilst sitting on the balcony with our first cuppa of the day. Similarly, we often sat there late evening with a glass of chilled wine to gaze at the stars and listen to the crickets in the distance. Kate's culinary skills are incredible and despite eating out at several restaurants, the best meals we enjoyed, were those cooked by Kate. The menu is exceptional - very reasonably priced and you are guaranteed the best table in the house! Cortijo Ceniza is more than a B&B and it is easier to consider it as your own holiday villa with your own personal chef, always at hand, if so required. The rate is fantastic value for money- with private infinity pool, several seating areas, outside bar area, hammock and not forgetting the most fabulous continental breakfast's -all included. Kate and Phil are the most fabulous hosts; warm, generous, discreet and extremely professional. We arrived as guests but certainly left as friends. We will also sorely miss our walks into the countryside with their dogs, Sam & Lizzie. Go on-treat yourself. You deserve it.

Owner's Response: Thanks Katy & Andy for your kind and detailed comments, I am overwhelmed! I am so very pleased you enjoyed your stay so much. We always try to pay attention to detail and treat our guests as we would like to be treated, that is, as valued friends. To do this we add all those little extras which we hope will make the difference to enable guests to feel pampered, relaxed and at home. As we have one guest room only, guests are guaranteed exclusivity and privacy and this enables the feeling Katy mentions of having your own holiday villa but at B&B prices. Thanks again Katy & Andy for your comments and your custom and we look forward to welcoming you back here very soon!

Peaceful & atmospheric location & accommodation

  • 5 of 5

Kate offers fantastic hospitality and attention to detail, coupled with a wealth of local knowledge and advice, plus a great sense of fun! We enjoyed a marvellous array of food at breakfast time and the flexibility and options for dinner were amazing. The house has a pretty, colourful garden with lots of thoughtfully planned corners in which to relax and take in the spectacular surroundings. Albeit the cooling weather, we did manage one or two refreshing dips in the lovely pool .... invigorating and well worth it! All in all, a wonderful time - thank you so much, Kate. Carol and Dave

Owner's Response: Many thanks Carol and Dave for this feedback and for finding the time in your busy schedules to comment. Glad you enjoyed your stay - one of the bonuses and features of a B&B is that we can pass on information, experience and advice about the local area - everything from where to park to which bar serves the nicest tapas! October is a super time to holiday here; the weather is cooling a little as you mentioned which means not only is it still warm enough to sunbathe and swim but comfortable and pleasant for sight-seeing too and with lovely blue skies and sunshine. Many reviewers and guests have been kind enough to mention the extensive, landscaped flower gardens here at Cortijo Ceniza - a most unusual feature in Spain and something which guests often say adds to the tranquility, atmosphere and sense of privacy and peace. I am very glad you enjoyed your stay and hope to have the pleasure of hosting you again very soon. Thanks again for your kind comments.

Everything it says on the can and the rest

Kate really goes the extra mile to host the perfect "away from it all" holiday experience. She has put her life, heart and soul into her superbly appointed farm house with all the home from home touches, a most comfortable room with a view, magnificent breakfasts and all. Whilst being slightly remote, the house is handy for cultural, coastal and mountain activity venues all easily accessible with the benefit of her extensive local knowledge.

A truly intelligent, well read and humerous lady who is definitely worth a visit.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much Nigel T! Grateful to you for taking the time out to write this review and also for the very kind comments you have made. Am so glad that you enjoyed your holiday here; as you say the farmhouse is secluded without being isolated as it is situated down a level gravel track and a short drive from the public road. Cortijo Ceniza is only a few minutes drive from Jatar or alternatively a short, pleasant walk through the olive groves to the village. In the other direction, a five minute drive brings you to the stunning lake at Bermajeles, ideal for walking, swimming, paddling or just sitting and enjoying the tranquil beauty of the lakeside. We are also ideally placed to explore the countryside, visit Granada or the coast. Guests enjoy exceptional levels of privacy and exclusivity as Cortijo Ceniza B&B has only one letting bedroom. In addition, the atmosphere here is peaceful and relaxed to ensure guests can have fun and enjoy themselves to the full. Thanks again Nigel T and I do hope to have the pleasure of hosting you both again.

a little bit of paradise!

  • 5 of 5

If you want a luxury break in 'real spain' but for a great price this place has been absolutely amazing. Panoramic views, home grown food freshly cooked as and when, stunning accommodation, beautifull grounds and you have it all to yourself with no other guests :D friends know I can be a very 'picky' person but I honestly can't fault anything!

Unfortunately we did not get to use the pool due to the ever changing weather but it looked lovely with an absolutely gorgeous view of the olive groves and sierra! We honestly had a wonderful stay and me and my partner are hoping to return for another break in the near future!

Owner's Response: Dear Homepies Thank you so much for taking the time to write this very kind review. I am so pleased you enjoyed your holiday here. You won't thank me for telling you, you were unusually unlucky with the weather - the one thing we can't control of course - as the weeks before and after your stay were hot and sunny. However, it is good to know that whatever the weather you thoroughly enjoyed your stay; the farmhouse is very cozy and welcoming in winter. I know that after a day in the sun when the early spring evening turned a little chilly sitting in front of the blazing log fire enjoying a glass of wine and some home-made soup and bread at Corito Ceniza was a highlight of your break. It was an absolute pleasure to meet and host you both and I very much look forward to seeing you again soon.

From the Owner

Tired of the rat race, we spent some time looking for a new permanent home in Spain and decided to live in the "real" Spain away from the hustle and bustle of the costas. Fresh, clean air, freedom, sunshine, peace and quiet are essential to us; we have found them all at Cortijo Ceniza and enjoy sharing them with guests. A friend sums this up very well, saying that here is "Spanish Spain". We like this part of Spain because it is very beautiful, mountainous but still accessible and not remote. There is a precious sense of community, a slower pace of life and enjoyment in small, everyday things. So if you would like to experience the beauty, spirit and joy that is real Spain, with guaranteed privacy and at reasonable cost, please come and stay at Cortijo Ceniza.

Activity and Interests

Cortijo Ceniza is only 4km from the stunning Lake Bermejales, ideal for walking bird watching, swimming or sunbathing. Horse riding is available within 5 mins drive and GR7 walk passes near the house. In less than an hour's stunning drive through the spectacular mountain scenery of the Cabra Pass you are i the popular seaside resort Almunejar and fifteen minutes further on is Nerja. A further fifteen minute drive takes you to the quieter, unspoilt resorts of La Herradura and Marina del Este.

90 minutes drive from Malaga internal airport and 40 mins from Granada airport for BA flights from London City Airport (from July 2013) and internal Spanish flights. We recommend use of a car to truly appreciate and explore this lovely part of Andalucia.

Only 3km from the little village of Jatar, a typical Andalusian community and 4km from the slightly larger town of Arenas del Rey. We are situated 15km from the ancient and fascinating town of Alhama de Granada, with its famous thermal baths and described in the Rough Guide as "an unsung gem". Ski-ing is available at the Sierra Nevada ski resort in Granada, the most southerly ski resort in Europe, where most winters you can ski from early December to mid April (60 mins drive approximately).

Further Details:

Jatar, which nestles at the foot of the Sierra Almijera mountain range, has a good bar serving excellent and reasonably priced lunches, as well as a well-stocked supermarket, tobacconist/sweet shop, Hamburgesa and bakery. A number of fiestas and carnivals are held locally each summer, offering free food and drink to everyone. In particular, the annual mid August Jatar fiesta is excellent, with a firework display which is second to none.Arenas del Rey has several bars, all offering food, as well as a bank and supermarket. Alhama de Granada has a picturesque and well preserved old quarter, a number of shops, banks, many bars offering "Menu del Dia" (a daily changing and economically priced lunch menu) and several restaurants. Alhama also has a bustling and interesting market on Fridays and is host to numerous carnivals, fairs and fiestas throughout the year. The town is home to a famous and stunning natural gorge which is ideal for nature lovers or walkers and soothing, healing natural hot springs and baths.

Our cortijo is set amid stunning mountain scenery with many walks available, to suit all levels and interests. We are only approx 40 mins drive from Granada, which has numerous shops, as well as many events such as as festivals and concerts and is home to the world famous and unparalleled Alhambra Palace. As we are in Granada Province, alcoholic drinks served in bars are accompanied by "tapas", delicious, small savoury dishes which are included in the (very reasonable) price of your drink. Some visitors to the area find these home-cooked tapas one of the surprise highlights of their stay. In summary, this beautiful area is ideal for bird watching, walking, touring, photography, painting, cycling, riding, mountain biking, star gazing or just simply relaxing.
