About the property

Apartment in Taunton, Somerset, England - Convenient Yet Peaceful Location On A Working Smallholding

Higher House was a 'working' barn until 20 years ago when it was converted into a house. We have added hugely to the basic conversion, principally in the creation of the garden but have continued the agricultural theme as active smallholders with sheep and ducks. Our holiday apartment is on the second floor of our home with independent access so although we are on hand should you need any help, visitors are completely self-contained. Whether you choose to relax 'at home' or spend days away, we can assure of a peaceful and comfortable base here at Higher House. We encourage our guests to make use of our grounds but warn you that we do have deep water on the property and must emphasise it is your responsibility to keep young children and pets safe.

About Kirsten Horton

My husband and I escaped from the south east more than ten years ago, searching for a home in the countryside but within easy reach of necessary everyday services. Moving to Somerset was one of our better decisions and we greatly enjoy the benefits of country living.

Why Kirsten Horton chose Taunton

We were still working when we bought our home and choose the location because of its excellent communication links with London and the north - now that we are retired, we greatly enjoy the easy access to the west, whether it is the north and south coasts or the Quantock hills and Exmoor as well as Dartmoor.

What makes this apartment unique

We are conveniently situated to the west of Taunton with an hourly bus service at the end of our drive.

We encourage our guests to make use of our attractive grounds - playing cricket or football on the lawn, pottering on the lake or just enjoying the gardens.

Guests are welcome to join in the feeding and care of the ducks - and visit the sheep when they are grazing locally.

Notes on accommodation: The apartment is double glazed and central heated. All fuel costs are included in the rental. Children are welcome and a cot, high chair and stair gates are available on request. Well behaved pets are welcome. Please keep dogs under control as we have sheep and ducks. Our apartment achieved a Gold Award from Visit England for the exceptional quality of accommodation and customer service offered. Outside: There is under-cover parking for one vehicle with ample off road parking for additional vehicles. Visitors have their own garden table and chairs. There are various seating areas around the property and chairs can be moved as desired. A barbecue is available for guests. In season vegetables and fruit are available from our garden. Utility Room: Visitors may use the owners' washing machine situated in the utility room of the main house and outdoor dryer. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All towels, bedlinen (duvets) and tea towels are included in the rental price - but please bring your own beach towels. All kitchen and bathroom necessities ie. washing up liquid and cleaning products, kitchen roll, toilet rolls etc are supplied.

Heaven!!

Such a lovely , comfortable apartment. Beautifully equipped with everything you need for a happy holiday. Well situated for country & coast. The weather was fabulous and we made the most of sitting out in the garden, accompanied by the resident cat, chickens, ducks etc. Plenty of places of interest to visit, but very comfortable if you want to have a day or so without driving. If you like reading, there is a large variety of books for your perusal. It truly is a home from home, so well equipped!!

Sheep, ducks and a cat

A lovely place to stay for a few days while relocating to the area. Plenty of living space and a well equipped kitchen. Ample hot water which is very hot. The owners are very helpful.

The ducks are very amusing (they don't tell jokes but they like to walk in line up and down the garden) . An idyllic rural setting.

Good WiFi connection - in this area , mobile phone signal is universally poor inside , but I did get a weak signal with O2.

Location

Coast/Beach:

North Somerset coast - about 25 minutes by car.

South Somerset coast - about 55 minutes by car.

Travel:

Bristol Airport - 45 miles.

Exeter Airport - 30 miles.

Use of a car is recommended to gain full enjoyment of the area.

Our daytime bus service calls at Taunton railway station and stops at the end of our lane.

Distances:

Bristol 52 miles.

Exeter 34 miles.

Minehead 20 miles - West Somerset Railway 4 miles.

Glastonbury and Street 30 miles.

Further Details:

Hillcommon has a pub, the Orchard Inn which serves tasty meals. Oake, half a mile away has a community run shop and post office - newspapers can be ordered and collected from the shop.

Milverton, just under 2 miles away, has a pub and general shop; Wiveliscombe, about 5 miles to the west, has an excellent butcher, delicatessen, two small supermarkets, tea rooms and gift shop.

Taunton has a good selection of high street shops and supermarkets, multi screen cinema, theatre and bowling alley as well as petrol stations and banks.

Wellington, just five miles away has a good selection of independent shops.

Enjoy cricket in Taunton, golf at nearby Oake Manor and water sports at Wimbeball and Clatworthy. Cycle hire is available in Taunton. Somerset enjoys an extensive network of footpaths to provide country walks to suit all tastes.

National Trust properties within easy distance include Killerton north of Exeter, Knightshayes Court near Tiverton, Barrington Court - and RHS Rosemoor near Great Torrington.

For those researching their family history, Somerset Heritage Centre is about 10 minutes drive towards Taunton.
