Renovated 17th Century Townhouse, With Patio And Roof Terrace

The house was originally one of Spain's first public granaries in the 17th century. Now completely renovated, with three double bedrooms plus one spare room with two single beds, it sleeps eight easily. Located in the heart of the old town, it's a few minutes walk from the main square and local bars and restaurants. Many of the processions of local fiestas pass directly in front of the house, providing a great place to watch the festivities. Perched on top of a limestone cliff, Arcos de la Frontera is one of the most striking villages in Spain. Its whitewashed houses and stone churches wind upwards into the old town, stopping abruptly as the sheer cliff face dramatically plunges down to the valley of the river Guadalete below. Arcos has some of the most spectacular fiestas running throughout the year, a traditional Spanish experience: flamenco, sherry, tapas and long warm evenings. There is also a nearby golf course, and lake where you can sail.

A slice of real spain I would recommend this property

Firstly the support in booking the property through Mark was first class, he couldn't have tried harder to answer any questions we had.

8 of us stayed in the property February 2017 and we visited a number of landmarks in the area not to mention a great deal of eating with wine and sherry drinking.

A lovely house sympathetically restored with all requirements for the 8 of us. Essentials such as hot water was in plentiful supply and because it was so early in the year the open fire was a nice addition when we returned late at night. Beds nice and comfortable.

Plenty of bars and restaurants within easy walking distance although the house is in a quiet part of town. Small convenience store within 50yards discreetly placed between the properties.

Its all a bit frantic when you drive up to the house first time....but take it easy, park and unload the car and all will be well. The welcome from the cleaner went all according to plan.

Nice outside terrace on the roof that would be great in the summer.

The local people are fantastic. We became friends with a few bar / restaurant owners, but you have to avoid the tourist traps as they are more pricy than the traditional eateries. That said it was a fantastic experience and I would stay again.

Parking is a slight issue, there are places in town but we parked in the main free area down in the new town and walked up. I didn't kill us and was an interesting start and finish to the day. A slice of real Spain with easy access to tourist areas. I would recommend this property.

Magical!

This amazing house, located in the heart of old Arcos, was the perfect base for enjoying the pleasures of the region. We easily drove to Grazalema, Jerez, and Sevilla from there. But to our delight, our two daughters (ages 28 and 32) said that what they really wanted to do was to spend their time relaxing in this splendid space. It is beautifully renovated and well maintained. Because we arrived on a chilly March afternoon, the housekeeper had started a fire to warm us up. The whole experience was delightful, and our family all agreed that we'd love to return for a longer stay very soon.

Arcos is a beautiful hill town with gorgeous views of the surrounding countryside; however, visitors with mobility issues should be aware that the streets are narrow, and cars must be parked in the lower town, necessitating a 10-15 minute walk (or cab ride) up to the house.

Wonderful House

We absolutely loved staying here and will definitely book again. Beautiful house with lots of space and everything you need. Right in the centre of things, so lots of restaurants and bars are only minutes away. Great customer service from the owner. Highly recommended.

Nous avons apprécié la localisation de cette location dans le vieil Arcos de la frontera à deux pas de la place del Cabildo. La maison est très spacieuse avec de hauts plafonds et bénéficiant d'une terrasse avec un point de vue sur la plaine et d'une cour intérieure raffraichissante. Les chambres et sanitaires sont décorées avec beaucoup de gout. Enfin la cuisine est bien équipée et dispose de tout le nécessaire pour cuisiner pour huit personnes. Merci à Mark pour cette belle location que nous recommandons sans hésiter!

excellent beautiful spacious property

We spent two wonderful weeks in this stunning property. It was our third time back. To me comfort and cleanliness are important and this property always delivers. The bonus is the attention to detail in how beautifully this property has been renovated, well maintained, and the space ...so my husband, son and friends were not on top of each other! Then there are the amenities from the well decked out kitchen, bathrooms, laundry room, wifi, TV, lots of sheets, and towels, the roof top terrace for hot evenings! Not to mention a wonderful housekeeper available to come and clean on request! This is before we talk of the lovely setting of Arcos itself, with restaurants within walking distance, great churches/cathedrals to explore, and beaches a short drive away. We will be back!

Geat house, magical hill town.

House better than website suggests. Owner organised perfectly. Superb local bars and restaurants. Go! And do take day trips to Grazalema in the mountains to swim under vultures in the wonderful village pool, and to see Seville on a Seebybike guided tour, and to choose your own fish and have it cooked in Cadiz market. But don't plan to do too much. Arcos will stop you dead so spend most days there reading books, and letting Manolo in the Meson in the nearby square serve you superb food and drink day after day and give you a bill way, way lower than you could ever predict. The bookshelves in the house are well stocked too. Me, my wife, the teenage children all needed to just stop and have time together. This met our needs perfectly.

Coast/Beach:

The Costa de la Luz is 30 minutes by car 200 miles of unspoilt coast line and shimmering white beaches. There are plenty of tranquil spots along the coast between Puerto de Santa Maria and Tarifa. You can always find good seafood and tapas restaurants too up and down the coast.

Travel:

The closest airport is Jerez La Parra a 30 minute drive door to door. Ryanair fly direct from Stansted regularly. Hiring a car is recommended if you want to visit the surrounding area. You can also fly to Madrid from Stansted and take a connecting flight to Jerez on Ryanair or other airlines. Otherwise flying direct to Seville, about an hour’s drive to Arcos, is also convenient.

Distances:

A 20 minute drive from Arcos, you will find Jerez de la Frontera—renowned for its sherry and brandy production, as well as its fine horses and Flamenco. Other Pueblos Blancos within an hour's drive include Medina Sidonia, Vejer de la Frontera, Olvera and Grazalema. Further East, passing through the Sierra de Grazalema - a 50,000 hectare protected natural park - is the town of Ronda, the birthplace of modern bull fighting and a favourite of Hemmingway.

Arcos was declared a national historic-artistic monument in 1962 in recognition of its exceptional architecture and impressive location. The old town is a tangled labyrinth of cobbled streets and alleys that lead up to the churches of Santa Maria de la Asuncion and San Pedro. From the square at the top, there are spectacular views of the Andalusian countryside.

The old town—where the house is located—is a maze of narrow streets, lined with a mix of Gothic-Mudejar, Jewish and Renaissance architecture. Patios and courtyards hide inside every doorway, and echoes of the Moorish presence here recall ancient times.

The village sits in the heart of a national park in the Andalusian countryside, and in the surrounding area there is much to explore. Arcos de la Frontera offers tranquility, history, architecture, stunning views, and a rich example of Spanish culture.

Nearby Jerez dates back to Moorish times and has a charming old town and palm lined squares. Visit the bodegas to sample the local sherry—Osborne, Gonzalez Byass, Pedro Domecq and Sandeman. Jerez has been a centre of viniculture since wine-making was introduced to Spain by the Phoenicians in 1100 BC.

Andalusian horses have attracted admiration since ancient times. You can witness the pride of this tradition at the Real Escuela del Arte Ecuestre, the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art, which is located in a magnificent 19th century mansion designed by the architect of the Paris Opera.

Jerez is also famous for Flamenco, and the flameco festival of Jerez at the end of February is one of the most important in the world. Dating back to when Jerez was part of the Caliphate of Córdoba, the Arabian Baths are also worth a visit.

Other major cities nearby include Seville (60 mins by car) and Cadiz (30 mins).
