Cottage in Gurteen, Co Sligo, Ireland - Enjoy Peace And Tranquility Of Lovingly Restored Cottage Set Amongst Old Beech And Chestnut Trees

James Tymons farmhouse cottage which has been carefully modernised is set on 30 acres of farm land by the banks of the Owenmore river. It is fully centrally heated but retains the character of the open fire and a large peat and timber burning stove.I provide unlimited peat and wood for your enjoyment including everything needed to start the fire. Bedrooms have original wrought iron bed frames and original character floor boards. The cottage is just 1km from the local village of Gurteen, the centre of traditional Irish music in Co Sligo. It has lots of services including supermarket, health centre,pharmacy, post office, petrol station and hardware store. After a day exploring the wonderful and varied landscape of Yeats country relax with a stroll on our prepared paths by the river or through the rookery to the ancient horse chestnut tree. In the evening sit back with a glass of wine and enjoy a turf fire or why not stroll to the village to enjoy traditional Irish music in the local pubs. On those lazy sunny days sit in the garden or the courtyard and fire up the BBQ. You could also take your lunch and have a picnic on our garden furniture by the river bank.

Why not try your hand at fishing. The cottage is bordered by approx 400 metres of the Owenmore river and you will find a path running along its length.

To the rear of the cottage we have the old cowbire and stone walled sheds.The haybarn is to the rear of these sheds. Paths leading around the farm radiate from here.

About the Owner

James Tymon cottage and farm has been in our family for generations. It has been named in remembrance of my great uncle who left here to fight in the first world war.He never returned. His picture has hung in the cottage from that time. I recently retired which allows me more time to devote to the cottage and grounds. It gives me great pleasure that so many people enjoy their stay here and return again and again.

I have lost count of the number of times we have stayed in this cottage but each time it takes my breath away.This time was very special as our 18month old daughter came.To say she loved it would be an understatement.Thank you Kieran for another fab holiday.

Supberly appointed rural cottage

This is the second time my wife and I have stayed in this beautifully decorated and very well appointed cottage sitting on extensive grounds where the owner has created paths and quiet restful areas to take advantage of the quiet location.

The cottage is a joy with fully fitted kitchen, excellent bathroom with a walk-in shower enclosure a lovely dining area with glass fronted inglenook stove and an abundant supply of turf, leading into a sitting room with an extensive library, television and games.

The upstairs bedrooms are light and airy and the beds are really comfortable, all in all a gem.

dream cottage

We have just returned from a wonderful week at James Tymons cottage. The cottage itself is olde worlde but with mod cons. The grounds are well maintained and much loved by our King Charles. We will return next year.

Beautiful cottage

outstanding accomodation . would recommend this beautiful home too every age group. its a great getaway for couples and families . the views are breathtaking ,plenty of land for walking all amenities are also close too the property . ideal for pets too. we as a family would give this holiday home more than a 5 star rating its well kept inside and out the owner is very welcoming and nothing is too much trouble for him . we take our hats off to the owner , , if we were asked if any changes or improvements could be made , we would say definitely not .

Coast/Beach:

Co Sligo has numerous beaches. Some of them are as follows.

Strandhill has a beautiful beach is approx 24 miles fro the cottage.

Rosses Point is 5 miles from Sligo. It has a 2km stretch of fine sand with a backdrop of sand dunes with views of Knocknarea mountain.

Mullaghmore is a blue flag beach north of Sligo. Its a sandy beach with small sand dunes. Described as a safe beach.

Streedagh beach a small beautiful beach 20 minutes north of Sligo town. All of the above are suitable for surfing.

Travel:

I will provide full directions from any point in Ireland to the cottage. On my website directions can easily be obtained in the directions page.

Knock international airport is 32km away about 35 minutes.

Shannon airport is 187km approx 2hours and 35 minutes.

Dublin airport is 194km and approx 2 hours 30 minutes.

Dun Laoighaire port is 200km and approx 2 hours 40 minutes.

Distances:

Gurteen village is 1km away. There are lots of market towns close by. Boyle is 10 miles. King house was the headquarters of the Connacht rangers open to the public. Forest park just outside Boyle has beautiful walks. There are megalithic tombs at Carrowkeel a few miles away. Ballymote with it's castle ruin is 7 miles away and close by is the Raptor centre where majestic eagles and other protected wild species can be seen performing. The cottage is centrally located for exploring the west.

James Tymon cottage is the perfect solution with its large stove and open fire you are sure to be cosy regardless of the weather. Of course I provide unlimited turf and timber for your stay. It is wonderful to be at the cottage in all seasons but I think spring is my favourite with plants and trees coming back from their slumber. The silence as I mend a stone wall or repair a path is fabulous only broken by the sound of busy birds coming and going in the old sheds and barn. When you stay here you can get totally away from it all just by walking on the prepared paths by the river or up to the old horse chestnut tree by old stone walls,or back by the haybarn to the fields and meadows beyond. If you have a pet they will love the freedom and space the grounds have to offer. The local village is just 1 km walk away.The supermarket there is open every day including Sunday until 9pm. There is also a food menu in two of the village pubs where you will find regular music sessions

It has views of the river to the front and looks out over the old buildings and trees to the rear. Our second bedroom with its two windows overlooking the front garden has a double and a large single (4 foot) bed.

  • Notes on accommodation: All linen, towels, heating and electricity are included in the price. I also supply unlimited turf for both the open fire and Nestor martin stove. Your pets are welcome and they will love the grounds. There is no charge for your pets. Outside: Our garden is to the side and front of the house. We have garden furniture in the courtyard in the garden and on the river bank. Enjoy a glass of wine or beer while setting up the BBQ on those warm sunny evenings. We have many prepared and mowed paths leading from the house back by the river or up through the trees to the fields and meadows beyond. Great for a stroll of an evening and if you have brought your pet(s) they will love the grounds. Utility Room: Our utility room contains our washing machine and dryer. A clothes basket with pegs are also provided as we have a clothes line in the airy hay barn. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The cottage is prepared for your arrival. All linen and towels are provided for your stay and are included in the price. All the heating and electricity are included in the price. Toilet rolls and cleaning products are of course provided. Other: Our bright dining room has views to the front and rear so you can enjoy a relaxing breakfast looking out at the garden. In the background our Nestor martin stove which is fitted in the old fireplace and is simple to use will keep you very comfortable.
