Overview

About the property

Villa in Lucca, Tuscany, Italy - Quiet Rural Location In National Park, But Close To Lucca, Florence, Pisa Airport And The Seaside

Villa Villenia is a 16th century villa built on a valley side in a small village. There are stunning views from the garden. There are many excellent restaurants in the locality: supermarkets are nearby. The house is large with five double bedrooms; a further room with a double bed settee; a large marbled formal room; a music room with murals; a large living room; a study and library; a modern kitchen with all facilities; a large dining room; four bathrooms including a jacuzzi; a garden with outside eating area and the swimming pool. We bought and restored the house in 2002, including specially commissioned furniture. There is parking for three cars at the front of the house as well as a shrine to the Virgin Mary. There are many festivals in the area, which guests can attend as well as the many beautiful Tuscan towns and villages.

About John Reading

Hallo, Villa Villenia is the home of Zaibby and John Reading. We bought it in 2002 and took a bit over a year to convert it to how we wanted it. We both loved Italy of all the European countries and Lucca was a favourite city. It also helped that there was an airport with budget airlines nearby. We are at the house pretty much every month, in between lettings and then more in autumn and spring. We have lots of (Italian) friends locally which makes it feel very friendly. There are many festivals in the area which we join in. You can too. We have travelled a lot so there are art works and other things from China, India, Tanzania and other countries in the house. Hope you like them.

Why John Reading chose Lucca Area

We started looking in 2000 mainly around Verona, Siena and Lucca. We focussed on Lucca because its a wonderful walled city and because of the closeness of Pisa airport. We must have visited 20 properties before we found this house. The house is in the Garfagnana national park so a beautiful setting with good walking and skiing further north. It's about 600 ms above sea level on the side of a valley so gets nice fresh breezes when it's scorching in the valley. It's set in a small rural village, vineyards, fruit trees, a small church but close to the various facilities and Lucca itself.

What makes this villa unique

This is a large house full of surprises, rooms on different levels, rooms where you don't expect them, lots of murals. I doubt there are many houses with as much character and at the same time so much room and all contemporary facilities. The house is in a real sun spot and so we've had lunch outside even in December. One of our great pleasures is sitting on the balcony with a glass or two of prosecco as the sun goes down over the mountains.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We had a superb time and miss it already. It's a stunning place in a superb location and we would recommend it to anyone.

Just a note to say that we all had a fantastic (and very therapeutic) time over the last couple of weeks and loved staying at Villa Villenia. Thanks once again. Perhaps we will be able to come back again some time. In any event, if you need an endorsement for staying at the Villa I will very happily oblige.

This is just to say we had a great time at your house. We made various trips - all fairly close by - Viareggio, Barga, Bagni di Lucca - but the house was lovely to come back to. It exceeded all expectations.

Splendid in every regard!

  • 5 of 5

Our party of 6 from Colorado, Vancouver and the UK were thoroughly enchanted and enthralled at this house in the hills of Tuscany. Rich in collectibles from all over the world, the house is full of multi-level surprises. Fabulous garden and pool. The owners (John and Zaiby) were immensely gracious in providing us with local history and guidance for a maximum regional experience.

Get away from it all

  • 5 of 5

Villa Villenia exceeded our already high expectations when we chose this property for a special family holiday. It proved to be an ideal base for exploring the Garfagnana, Lucca and is only 40 minutes from the beach resort of Viraggio.

The villa has many spacious rooms and is well equipped to easily accommodate 10 people. The pool and terrace were very popular with all of our party and the kitchen dining area was used for most of our evening meals rather than the formal dining room.

It was always a delight to return from our explorations to this lovely villa.

Communication with the owner was cordial and very helpful, his responses to our myriad questions were prompt, friendly and fully answered our enquiries.

The location of this villa is ideal for those who are seeking to get away from it all. Fabulous!

Location

Coast/Beach:

The nearest beaches are at Viareggio and Forti di Marmei (about an hour's drive from the house). This is a long broad expanse of beach with good swimming and a long fashionable esplanade with shops and restaurants. Further north is the more rugged coast line of Liguria and Cinque Terre with a number of smaller resorts/fishing villages.

Travel:

The nearest airport is Pisa (45 minutes) - Ryanair, Easyjet and BA. Florence (1 hour) and Genoa (1hr 45 minutes) airports can also be used. Car hire is essential.

Distances:

The nearest village is Diecimo with shops and restaurants (10 minutes). Supermarkets are 15 minutes away and on the main road to Lucca (30 minutes). All the famous cities and towns of Tuscany are within easy driving distance (or train from Lucca) including Florence, San Gigmignano, Volterra, Sienna, the Chianti region, Montalcino and Montepulciano. The Garfagnana is a wonderful area with many fine places to visit such as Barga and Castelnuovo.

Further Details:

There are excellent, inexpensive restaurants locally plus two highly regarded top restaurants. We will send you full details when you book and can make reservations for you for special occasions. The local village has the usual facilities including cashpoint and banking; excellent baker and butchers. There are a number of local markets. Lucca is a wonderful walled city with all facilities.
