About the Owner

My wife and I live in the UK where I am a professional musician. We first visited Watamu 15 years ago and fell in love with the lovely atmosphere, amazing beaches, warm seas, water sports and safaris. We then visited usually twice a year for some years before buying land and, after much research, building our dream house which we very much consider to be our home when we are able to be there. We were helped in the design of the house and pool by a celebrated local artist and sculptor and we like to think that influence comes through in the warm, comfortable feel of the house whilst retaining strong African influence. The house is managed locally when we are not there so there is always someone on hand to deal with issues or problems though we welcome queries and observations.

From the Owner

Watamu is a truly captivating place with a great atmosphere, friendly locals and spectacular palm fringed beaches and seas dotted with coral reefs. You may fish for Marlin and Sailfish, snorkel, dive, go dolphin watching, take a slow dhow trip up the creek or enjoy various water sports. If you prefer land based activity then riding, walks in the Skoke forest and the Gedi ruins are all close by and the Tsavo game park is just two and a half hours away. Local good quality hotels are open for beach side drinks and meals beside the Indian Ocean or you may prefer a local meal and drink in one of the local bars in the village. Though it retains a local feel, Watamu is easily accessed from Malindi or Mombasa airports which connect daily to Nairobi.

  • Notes on accommodation: The house takes it's name from the local tribal name for Gekko. The accommodation has very large rooms and very large beds locally made and hand carved. The floating staircase which was designed by local artist and sculpter, Andrew McNaughton, features neam wood banisters and rails. The pool is designed in margins to allow you to lie or sit in areas of it as well as having a 2 meter deep end. A bird bath encourages many beautiful local birds and Sykes monkeys are occasional visitors. Good wifi connection available. Though the area is considered safe, in addition to the night guard we are members of WAC (Watamu Against Crime) which provides a 24 hour armed response. This is advertised on the entrance gates an additional deterent. Outside: The grounds are partly maintained as garden with local tropical and indigenous plants and trees and partly kept as 'bush' encouraging local exotic birdlife. There are a number of palms and other indigenous flora including small Baobob trees. The private pool surround has sunbeds and mattresses and a shower. The BBQ is brick built and a local man will deliver fish, prawns, squid etc. Utility Room: Washing machine is in a separate undercover area outside where staff will wash and dry your clothes and bedding. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All towels and linen are provided and the house is cleaned daily by the staff, Paul and Francis. Bedlinen and towels will be washed on reasonable request. Beds are made and turned down by staff. A cook can be arranged for an additional cost if needed. Other: The 'sundowner' roof terrace equipped with built in seating and mattresses is the perfect spot for the early evening overlooking the pool area and grounds. There is a toilet and fridge here. The hallway has a 'floating' staircase with natural wood rails.
