Overview

About the property

House in St Merryn, nr Padstow, Cornwall, England , Walking Distance To Pubs,Restaurants

Penwhine is a spacious chalet style bungalow with plenty of family accommodation. The house is our family holiday home. It has a large well equipped kitchen with adjoining large dining room that can seat 8. There is a cosy sitting room with small television and DVD player , and plenty of games. There are 2 twin rooms and a small bunk room on the ground floor and family bathroom, upstairs is the large master bedroom with adjoining shower and wc. The house has been described as a tardis by some guests. There is a small child and dog proof garden at the back of the house and plenty of parking.

The house is in a much sought after location close to the championship golf course and country club in Constantine bay, with no fewer than 7 sandy beaches within about 2 miles each with its own unique charm. For surfers there is a wave for all weathers and levels of ability; for families, rock pools galore and wide expanses of sandy beaches for building castles and running off some steam . Trevose is an area of outstanding natural beauty and is renowned for the variety and stunning beauty of its costal walks, especially around Trevose head with its spectacular views. St Merryn has an excellent village store , deli, bakery and surf shop . 2 pubs, the Farmers Arms and The Cornish Arms which now belongs to Rick Stein and serves great pub food . The bustling historic fishing town of Padstow is just 4 miles away with all its eateries , restaurants, shops, pubs and little galleries . crabbing off the quay is a favourite occupation , you can also pick up speed boat trips around the bay or a more sedate trip on one of the trip boats or a deep sea fishing trip .

wadebridge is a proper country town with low level of chain stores and lots of independent shops, galleries, pubs .

The large patio area at the back of the house is ideal for relaxing after a tough day on the beach or paying golf and plenty of space for the children to run about while you sip something long and cold.

The area prides itself on 7 bays for 7 days, Harlyn bay is a well known and popular beach with families, when the surf is right it can be excellent at harlyn there is a shop , surf lessons, paddleboarding and coasteering from the beach, Constantine bay is the most fantastic bay of golden sand, rock pools, sand dunes, reliable surf, but there can be rip currents, it adjoins boobys bay and you can walk from one to the other at low tide, Boobys Bay is another popular beach, but only accessible either side of low tide , nice flat sand and rock pools. Porthcothan is one of our favourite beaches, great surf at low tide , shop and life guards and never too busy .Mother Iveys beach is mainly for use by the campsite of the same name, but you can walk to it from Harlyn.

Treyarnon is a nice little beach with good surf and rock pools and a natural swimming pool that fills at high tide, all the above beaches allow dogs.

Trevone is another sandy bay with a little shop, life guards and no dogs.

Hawkers bay is a little closer to padstow and more in the estuary so no waves which is great if you have little people who do not like waves, but it is a bit of a walk from the car park and no facilities .

About Rachel Marffy

I have holidayed in Cornwall all my life originally at Trebetherick and Polzeath and now this side of the camel estuary. we have 4 children and now they all still enjoy coming to this area, so does granny! We have always wanted to have a home in Cornwall and now are lucky enough to own Penwhine. Our home is in Oxfordshire where my husband runs a stud farm and I am a physiotherapist.

Rachel Marffy purchased this house in 2008

Why Rachel Marffy chose North Cornwall

We love north Cornwall, it has something to offer all ages from tiny tots to grandparents. There is always new to do and discover, I even went coasteering last year , jumping off high cliffs into the Atlantic swell was something else! The beaches are quieter here than the more well known resorts of Polzeath and Newquay. The journey from the M5 has improved considerably over the past few years.we can get here from Oxfordshire in 3 3/4 hours if the traffic is good. The surfing and walking are fantastic and so is the eating!

What makes this house unique

The house is spacious and has a friendly feel, the dining room is well away from the bedrooms so there is little danger of waking sleeping children if you are having a noisy dinner. Unlike many holiday properties the house has everything (i think ) you need for proper cooking, nothing worse that wanting to make cookies and having no scales or mixing bowl.I even have some recipe books there. We now have a small TV there, mainly for rental guests, it is surprising how your children will manage to play games etc if there is no telly. Why not detox away from wifi and mobile phones?

We had a fabulous week in St Merryn, with some tremendous walks to dog friendly beaches. The whole family enjoyed staying at your house with all it had to offer. We most definitely would love to return. Thank you x

Lovely week in a brilliant location

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at Penwhine for Christmas week and had a thoroughly enjoyable stay. The property is very well equipped with everything you might possibly need, and is spacious and clean. The biggest plus with this house is the location. We'd never really explored this part of the coast and was amazed at the huge number of beautiful beaches and coves just a stones throw away. There are two nice pubs within walking distance and good amenities in the village. I'd definitely recommend this holiday home for a relaxing Cornish get away.

Perfect getaway property

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at Penwhine. This being our first trip to the area we didn't know what to expect but we found the village great, beach outstanding and the property perfect for our needs. There were 2 families of 4, 4 adults and 4 children and we had the perfect amount of room. Spacious bedrooms, a lovely big kitchen and even a wishing well to keep the children enthralled. An extra special touch was a bottle of champagne and card from the owners wishing us a Happy New Year.

I would recommend this property to families looking to escape to the coast and would love to return in the Summer.

Brilliant!

  • 5 of 5

We have just spent a wonderful week in this fabulously placed bungalow. It is truly a tardis and we had plenty of space for adults and lounging teens. The lack of wifi was wonderful and the Monopoly became a regular trip hazard/ that or the dog crashed out after two walks on local beaches. We loved this house and holiday - we have walked, played board games., body- boarded to our hearts' content. The only complaint is that we had to come home again...

I would have stayed longer and will definitely return.

Try:

Pasties - still working on removing the added layer from a pasty a day :)

Walk from Constantine to Mother Iveys bay then back across via golf course to Constantine.

Body boarding at Treyarnon... think this is spelling - bizarrely we had been here years ago - great fun!

Could go on for hours - we will return :)
