Nerja is a coastal town at the foot of the Almijara mountains in Andalucia. The town has a long tradition of fishing and agriculture. Fishermen still pull their nets ashore on Burriana beach (1.8 km from our villa) and you can buy fresh produce from the doorways of houses in the town as well as from the usual supermarkets. The town provides a wonderful combination of a sleepy, fishing village by day and a lively and exciting atmosphere by night. Nerja has all the ingredients necessary for a fantastic and memorable holiday for families, couples, and friends, including five clean beaches, lots of sunshine, and a huge choice of restaurants, bars, cafes, and nightclubs to suit every budget. Nerja is an authentic, regional centre -- and bears no resemblance to the kind of high-rise, holiday developments that are found in other parts of the Spanish Costas. Nerja is truly the jewel of the Costa del Sol, and its climate is probably the best in Europe!

Our villa has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a living-dining room, and a kitchen at one end. There is a small, secluded garden in front. The master bedroom and ensuite are on the ground floor, with doors to the garden. The other bedrooms and living area are on the first floor, where there is a large balcony with views over the town and out to sea. There are also stairs to a roof-top terrace with 360-degree views of the town, the mountains, and the sea.

Our villa is part of the community of San Juan de Capistrano, with a mixture of Spanish and expatriate residents. There is a superb swimming pool (said to be the biggest in Nerja), as well as several restaurants, a convenience store, and daily newspapers from across Europe. Every 30 minutes (60 minutes in winter), there is a bus to and from the town centre.

Nerja town includes the well-known Burriana Beach as well as several other clean and sandy beaches. According to Trip Advisor, Nerja boasts more than 300 restaurants -- not to mention plentiful ice-cream shops! At the heart of the town is the famous Balcón de Europa, jutting proudly out into the sea under the benign gaze of a life-size (and much photographed) statue of King Alfonzo XII. Next to the Balcón is the Church of El Salvador, a fine example of Baroque and Mudéjar architecture (17th century).

To the east of Nerja you will find the tiny village of Maro, site of the pre-historic Cuevas de Nerja (Nerja Caves). There is also an impressive aqueduct built in 19th century as well as the ruins of various mills, sugar factories, and the like. In the mountains to the north of Nerja lies Frigiliana, a picture-postcard, Moorish village of steep cobbled alleyways winding past pretty, white houses resplendent with flowers. In the mountains (Sierra de Almijara), there are numerous trails that were once used to carry goods (and, no doubt, contraband!) from the coast up to Granada and points north. Some trails are easy, as they are mainly follow old river beds and are quite flat. Other trails can go from sea level to nearly 2,000 metres. Needless to say, the views are spectacular. . . .

About the Owner

My husband is Canadian and I am Danish. Our children live in the UK. We travelled a lot while my husband was working. Now he is retired and we live in Spain. Villa Hibiscus is our home, we live here over the winter and then make it available for rental in the summer.

We love Nerja. It is such a friendly and laid-back town. It has all the charm of Old Andalusia and yet the shops stock newspapers, food, and beer from home! Who could ask for more? Our development (San Juan de Capistrano) was built in the mid-1980s and is still one of the most exclusive areas of Nerja. Special note for trivia fans: the board-game, "Trivial Pursuit", was developed by two Canadian journalists while they were living in Nerja in 1980!

World-famous Burriana Beach is 1.8km from our villa, with regular bus to town (every 30 minutes in summer, every 60 minutes in winter).

Travel:

Nearest airport is Malaga (approx.70 km or 45 min from Nerja). Numerous car hire firms are located at the airport. Or airport transfer can be arranged (approx. EUR 70 for taxi for up to 4 persons or EUR 100 for minibus for 5 or more). Or local buses run regularly between the airport and the main Malaga bus station and then on to Nerja. Malaga also has excellent train connections.

Distances:

1.8km from Balcon de Europa. 2km from Caves of Maro. 2km from Frigiliana.

Preferred changeover day is Saturday. However, outside the main holiday months (July and August), some flexibility may be possible.

Notes on prices:
Apart from July & Aug, subtract €50 per week to rent the upper level only, for 4 people max.

A deposit of 30% is required to confirm a booking.
Balance is payable not less than 15 days prior to arrival.
A refundable security deposit of €200 is required with the final payment.

There is so much to do in and around Nerja: walking, jogging, cycling, climbing, tennis, swimming, water sports, scuba diving, horse-riding, fishing (salt and fresh-water), hang-gliding, golf (20 min by car), skiing (90 min by car), and lots more. Of course, there are also fabulous spots to eat and drink, either in Nerja, along the coast or inland. In addition to the local cuisine, Nerja has restaurants offering dishes from all over the world. The picture-postcard village of Frigiliana is only 15 min inland from Nerja by car. The town of Almuñecar is only 20 min along the coast. From Nerja, you can make easy day-trips to Malaga (e.g. Picasso Museum), Granada (e.g. Alhambra), and even Gibraltar or Cordoba.
