Apartment in Salema, Western Algarve, Portugal - 30 Seconds To The Beach If You Take It Slowly, Enough To Do And See To Keep Everybody Happy

Angels View, so called because of its lofty position, has the best of all worlds. Excellent for families because of its safe, secure swimming and beach - the charm of a traditional fishing village with the daily business of the local catch and a truly diverse range of restaurants, bistros and bars. In easy reach of the honey-coloured coves of the south coast and just a few miles from the splendid surfing beaches of the west coast, with magnificent sunsets. Western Algarve really has something for everyone - whatever the season - and Angels View offers that bit of luxury and comfort which many holiday homes seem to lack. Angels View is a duplex apartment, at the top of a four-story apartment block. There is no lift (elevator) and is only accessible by the communal stairway; so is not suitable for those with mobility problems.

About the Owner

We had been visiting Salema for the past ten years and always stayed at the excellent Hotel Residencial. Sitting on our hotel balcony, sipping our wine in the evenings, we always looked longingly at the block of apartments opposite - saying 'if only'. It really is our second home, and as such, you may well find it more than well-equipped - especially in the kitchen - as we love to cook. Having stayed in holiday places all over Europe ourselves, we know what we would want and have tried to provide just that. We've really tried to make it as comfortable, homely and practicable for a holiday home, but would welcome any feedback. Please enjoy as much as we do!

We love this area because its so unspoilt but is within such easy reach of two spectacular coasts. Admittedly, there is some developmental behind the apartment, but the view from the top terrace and the master bedroom is second to none. It just has that exact balance of being busy enough to be interesting, yet utterly peaceful (apart from the fish van that toots every morning at 8.30 to announce its arrival). By and large, the way of life hasn't changed that much in the past 50 years, which is more than can be said for further east along the coast. If you want neon bars, packed beaches and night clubs, then perhaps Salema isn't for you. But there really is something for everyone within easy reach.

Special interest holidays:

Surfers - There are very few places anywhere in Europe that offer better surfing than the Western Algarve. Less experienced, older or younger surfers/bodyboarders can enjoy the clean, relatively unchallenging swells along the south coast, at beaches like Zavial and those around Sagres. The really serious surfers head for the West coast, to beaches like Praia de Castelejo and Praia Cordoama, just to the West of Vila do Bispo, about 8 miles from Salema; or travel further up the road towards Aljezur to do Amado near Carrapeteira (14 miles from Salema), where the world surfing championships have been held. There is also the superb crescent of Arrifana, which many good judges consider the best of all the surfing beaches along this coast.

Coast/Beach:

Salema is an EU award-winning beach for its safe, gentle swimming - ideal for small children and families. Figueira, about a mile along the coast, offers total seclusion at the bottom of a delightful little valley. There is a ruined fort on the cliffs above the beach to add a further touch of romance. Because of the walk, it is never crowded and frequently deserted, although its seclusion does attract the occasional naturist. There are just too many lovely beaches to mention - all different.

Travel:

The nearest airport is Faro; Salema is 70 miles west. The majority of the drive from the airport is along A22 (toll) - normally takes about 80 minutes. We would recommend a car, not only for ease of transport, but also so that you can explore the area fully, should you tire of beach life. However, there are regular buses, a taxi service and the famous Algarve Railway which terminate at Lagos, about 12 miles away, that can get you to Salema.

Distances:

Angels View is situated within the heart of the village. Lagos, 12 miles east of Salema, is a historic, walled town. The principal port of Western Algarve - offers superb beaches; top-class shopping; a range of sporting facilities and boat trips to the extraordinary sandstone coves and caves to the west of the town. Sagres, 11 miles west has a slightly end-of-the-world feel to it; several very attractive beaches, any number of good fish restaurants and you can learn to surf, dive or parasail.

Further Details:

Besides the beach and the brightly painted fishing boats drawn up alongside it, the other thing which makes Salema really special is the quality and variety of the restaurants. There are seven within easy,level walking distance of the apartment, most of them serving fish landed that day by the village’s fishermen. There is an ATM in the village and an excellent small supermarket in the apartment block. There is a large supermarket, selling daily English newspapers, just up the road. Salema boasts its own fish seller, a daily bread van, fresh fruit and veg, a small mini market, beach goods shops, arts and crafts in the season. Many diverse restaurants and bars in menu and price within walking distance. No matter what time of year, there is always somewhere open, but limited in November/December. There are all the usual holiday activities on offer, horse riding, spa treatments, paragliding; world class golf and surfing, plenty for children do to or just sit and soak up the sun and do nothing!

The apartment is really spacious. You can easily accommodate 6 people with ease and still have plenty of room to get away from 'the others' if you so wish! Plenty of room to invite friends over! We've really tried to make it how we would like it. New for 2017 is a Games Room. We think that Salema is just such a special place and are pleased that we can share a holiday home that goes just that bit extra to make your stay special.

Outside: There are three balconies at Angels View. One large one to accommodate even the largest family with a range of alfresco furniture. One private balcony for the occupiers of the master bedroom with own furniture. One smaller balcony adjacent to the kitchen which catches the afternoon sun.
