1950s villa in village just 800m from the beautiful beach of Pleherel Plage on the beautiful Emerald Coast. St Malo just 45 minutes with 20% travel concession with Brittany Ferries. 3 upstairs bedrooms with beds for six (one double and four singles) plus an additional 2 on futons. We have a travel cot. Plenty of living space downstairs and very well equipped, including games room and Wi-Fi. Original wooden floors, marble fire places and very good quality furnishings throughout. Good sized gardens to front and rear are mainly lawn. Surrounding area of Cape Frehel is a natural reserve and there is lots to do including seaside activities, golf, cycling, tennis (indoor and outdoor), horse-riding, historic towns, markets and coastal path GR 34. Boulangerie is close-by (not open in the winter). Rough Guide says 'while the entire Cote d'Emeraude is ravishingly beautiful, the Cap Frehel is exceptional'.

About Timothy Edward Reynolds

Tim and Jo have four children and work in in the south-east of England in education.

Timothy Edward Reynolds purchased this house in 2010

Why Timothy Edward Reynolds chose Dinan area

We bought Villa La Cigalette in 2010 in order to escape to France during the long school holidays. Our key requirements were to be very close to a great sandy beach, village location with easy access to shops and restaurants, access to family activities such as cycling and tennis, and convenience for the ferry port of St Malo. We also wanted something with character, rather than a modern box. We fell in love with villa La Cigalette from first sight and are sure that our guests will have a great time in Pleherel Plage. There is lots to do locally, with plenty of interest too if you want to range further afield.

What makes this house unique

Villa La Cigalette's main advantage is its proximity to a sandy beach which is stunning by any standards. We have lived both in Portugal and Virginia and saw nothing in either of those places to surpass the beach at Pleherel Plage. La Cigalette is very close to the centre of Pleherel Plage with convenient access to the boulangerie which is open outside wintertime. The villa is full of original 1950's touches including beautiful wooden floors and old marble fireplaces. We have tried to furnish La Cigalette tastefully and have enjoyed sourcing some characterful furniture from the UK and France. The house has good quality modern appliances and Wi-Fi. One of the best things to do locally is to collect mussels from various places on near-by beaches (watch where the locals go) at low water, to be eaten immediately as moules mariniere.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Nous avons adoré notre semaine à la Cigalette. Votre maison est très agréable et nous adorons cette région de Bretagne. Merci encore pour cette semaine idyllique.

Coast/Beach:

The gorgeous beach of Pleherel Plage on the Emerald Coast is just 800m away. The water is very clear with life guards in the peak season. The beach is backed by dunes and pine forest. We consider this to be one of the finest beaches in Brittany, if not in all of France. It compares very favourably with top beaches we have seen in other parts of the world. The long distance coastal footpath (GR34) is very close by. Mussels can be collected at low water from near-by beaches.

Travel:

St Malo is just 45 mins away. The small airport of Dinard is 35 mins away and is served by budget airlines. Rennes airport is about 2 hours away. A car would help to get to and from the villa, although it would not be strictly necessary once installed if you want to visit just the beach and the most local area.

Distances:

The villa is in the village of Pleherel Plage.

The small town of Frehel is 1 mile away.

Cape Frehel with its lighthouse and stunning views is 3 miles away.

The historic Fort La Latte is 3 miles away.

Historic St Malo and Dinard are 30-40 miles away.

Further Details:

There is a boulangerie and general store and a few restaurants in the village within a couple of minutes walk. The boulangerie closes in the winter but most of the restaurants remain open. There is a year-round boulangerie about a mile away in Frehel. Other shops and facilities are 5 minutes drive away in Frehel. A large new supermarket (SuperU) and a budget supermarket (Lidl) are about 10 minutes away towards Erquy. Internet access is available at the library in Frehel, at the beach cafe in season and at the casino in Sables D'Or Les Pins.

This area is particularly good for cycling and new dedicated cycle routes have been built recently as part of the ambitious Roscoff to Kiev european long distance cycle path. Some of these routes are spectacularly located, especially the one going to the lighthouse at Cape Frehel and the one going to Erquy which includes a specular bridge over the estuary. All the cycling is either on dedicated cycle-only paths or on extremely quiet country roads. Bikes can be hired locally or guests may bring their own.

Comfortable house in fab location

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed a lovely week in early September. The weather was mixed. Highlights were pre-breakfast runs to Cape Frehel and Sable d'Or les Pins, and many walks and swims along the stunning coastline and peaceful countryside in all weathers. The house was comfortable and well equipped, with different spaces for family members to do their own thing - chill, ping pong, internet, study, read, sketch, doze behind glass in the sun. We enjoyed family meals round the table, shared a jigsaw puzzle and managed to avoid the TV.

An undiscovered gem

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely week at the house, it is very comfortable and definitely grew on us with each day. The showers were great and we enjoyed the table tennis. The location is fantastic and so convenient, close to all amenities. Unfortunately the local bakery was unexpectedly closed otherwise it would have been perfect. There is a nice seafood restaurant just a short walk away. There are lots of fine sandy beaches nearby but our favourite is the local beach. All in all, with good weather, and the local mini golf, it was a great family holiday! Thank you!

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your feedback and we are very pleased that you enjoyed your stay. We will check on the most local boulangerie opening dates - hopefully the other boulangerie about one mile away was a satisfactory substitute.

Superbe residence for a family reunion!

  • 5 of 5

We booked the Cigalette for a family reunion and boy what a wunderful week we spent at this charming house! Well equiped kitchen and cosy dining and sitting room where we enjoyed long evenings with wine and good food. Long walks on the beautiful beaches, making trips to st Malo and Dinand, to st Cast le Guildo. Many villages yet to explore so we have to return for sure. Our Labrador had great fun in the fenced garden with collecting apples and at the beaches! He didn't want to get in the car when we had to leave :). We were lucky to have beautiful sunny weather and stunning sunsets. The only thing we could think of was a working fireplace to put the icing on the cake. A great collection of books and dvds (which we admired but didn't use because of the great weather) and of course a fierce family battle at the table tennis table! Thanks for a fantastic week in your charming beautiful house. For sure we will come back. Best regards from this Dutch Family Burger and their Labrador Leon.

The house was spacey and homely and it had all the facilities we wanted and more.

  • 5 of 5

When we arrived it was a house that stood tall against it's neighbours. The interior had homely touches and made you feel instantly at home and it was clean and tidy. We loved the fact the beach was a short walk away and the bay was sandy and quiet. We walked the beach everyday we also went rock pooling at the beach and saw lots of crabs, and fish. The surround area had a good choice of sandy coves, and harbours and for the family shop the supermarkets were nearby. We had a lovely family meal at Saint-Cast-le-Guildo to celebrate our daughter's 21st Birthday. We have felt really relaxed and it was good to have a break from home to forget about work and really unwind. Tim was very good and getting in touch and sorting out arrangements ready for our stay. I would recommend this house to my family and friends.

Very good accommodation and Ideal location

  • 4 of 5

We spent a very happy three weeks at La Cigalette in June/July 2016. The house was well equipped and the large enclosed garden is ideal for families of all ages, We particularly liked the situation in a friendly village which had all the essentials, boulangerie, an excellent reasonably priced restaurant and an easy walk to a wonderful beach. It is a property one would like to revisit.

Perfect Family Holiday Retreat

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at La Cigalette with our Daughter, Son-in-law and twin grand-daughters and it was perfect for our family holiday. On arrival we found the property to be clean with good facilities. The lovely beaches, which are close-by, are great for children to enjoy building sand castles, playing in the rock pools as well as safe bathing. There are plenty of good restaurants nearby. We would be happy to recommend this property to family and friends.
